Out of the Crate | Manchester Art Gallery
Nov 7, 2019–Dec 31, 2026 (UTC)
Manchester
Come and look behind the scenes of Manchester’s publicly owned sculpture collection. Part exhibition, part research space, Out of the Crate delves into the un-tapped history of the collection. This is an opportunity to investigate sculpture through access to stored collections and archival material. Find out what’s in store and how we look after it, help unlock hidden stories about works we know very little about and explore how artworks might encourage conversation.
We have about 400 sculptures from antiquity to the present day and, until recently, less than 5% were on display. As well as modern and contemporary works, there are 19th-century sculptures and works from earlier periods that have rarely been seen this century and are under-researched.
On display are a large range of materials including marble, bronze, wood, glass, ceramic and paper, a variety of sizes and shapes and different techniques of making. From bronze medals decorated with reliefs to large-scale free-standing 3D works, you can now see around 30% of the sculpture collection here. In terms of representation, we should also consider who has and hasn’t been included in the collection.
Suzanne Lacy: Uncertain Futures | Manchester
Jun 24, 2021–Dec 31, 2024 (UTC)ENDED
Manchester
Uncertain Futures is a project with American artist Suzanne Lacy, Communities Learning Manager Ruth Edson, two University academics and an Advisory Group of Manchester women over 50. It seeks to address the inequalities facing Manchester women over 50 relating to work and worklessness. We want to understand how interconnected issues of gender, age, labour, class, migration status, disability and race impact women’s paid and unpaid work.
For the first iteration which opened in June 2021, the gallery space hosted live interviews with 100 women over 50 from all walks of life, alongside workshops, talks, and media presentations that explored equity and survival. The 100 women came together in March 2022 for a celebratory dinner.
In this second iteration we reveal the development of Uncertain Futures and the initial research findings. Alongside a new film of the 100 women dinner, there are artworks and a timeline outlining the development of the project. Uncertain Futures combines art, research and activism and aims to create real social change and affect social policy.

If you’re a personal trainer reading this, you’re probably confident training yourself. But less than 1% of trainers can translate that same intensity and passion when training their clients. Where do you fit into that little conundrum? Does your own form differ from how you train your clients? Because the truth is very few PTs pay their clients’ sets as much care and attention as they do their own. So, what’s the fix? How do you teach your clients to ‘make love’ to every single rep so they get the best results possible? How do you become comfortable not merely with the right exercise selection, but locking the joints in at the right angle? And how do you make sure your client holds those positions no matter the distractions of fatigue, while maintaining tension on the right muscles and pushing a set beyond comfort zones? It’s definitely not easy, but we’re going to teach you how… Our Trainer Experience Day offers a unique opportunity to come behind the scenes with U.P. and explore our world-class coaching cues and program design, before experiencing a workout for yourself. YARAN ZHANG: Chinese Pavilion at Venice Architecture Biennale [ECR] | Manchester China Institute
Oct 17, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Manchester
The Venice Biennale, established in 1895, is an international event influenced by geopolitical and cultural factors. Belgium was the first to build its national pavilion in 1907, leading to the construction of 25 pavilions in the Giardini. Due to space shortages, the Arsenale was used as an exhibition venue starting from 1980, the 1st Venice Architecture Biennale. China began to exhibit in its national pavilion in Venice, first at the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation during the Venice Art Biennale in 2003, and later at the Arsenale during the Venice Art and Architecture Biennale from 2005. This presentation will provide an overview of the historical relationship between China and the Venice Biennale of Architecture and Art, with a particular focus on the Chinese national pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale from 2006 to 2023. By examining the interplay between architectural exhibitions in the China Pavilion and their cultural representation, this research aims to highlight China’s use of exhibitions for diplomacy while addressing a knowledge gap from an architectural-historical perspective. ABOUT THE SPEAKERYaran Zhang is a PhD candidate at the University of Manchester. She is also a researcher at the Manchester Architecture Research Group (MARG) within the Manchester Urban Institute. Her research interests encompass architectural exhibitions, the representation of architecture, and the intersection of cultural and political dimensions within the field of architecture. Before joining the University of Manchester, she received architectural training in China and the United States. NOTESMCI’s ECR Workshops are lunchtime seminars held in person at the Manchester China Institute. They seek to bring together students, faculty, and staff who can best provide feedback as Early Career Researchers develop their ideas. Free lunch will be provided.

Her calligraphy is a way of expressing her inner self in the form of art. The Prophetic saying that has always inspired her is: “Allah is beautiful and HE Loves Beauty.”
Learning calligraphy and exploring the world of art have brought a balance in Samar’s life helping her manage mental wellness better, creating a feeling of joy and providing an excellent stress relief mechanism from day to day tasks. Time Machine: Reimagine 70-90s Global Hits in Cantonese - Lunchtime Concert | Manchester Art Gallery
Oct 5, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED

The 70s to 90s were the golden era of Cantonese Pop music, especially in East Asia. Thanks to its unique geopolitical position, Hong Kong became a melting pot of international influences, blending tunes from Japan, America, Britain, France, Spain, Germany, Korea, and more. The magic happened when these global hits were given a Cantonese twist with new lyrics. In Cantonese music, the lyrics are the star of the show. With six distinct tones in the language, getting the right tone is crucial — one wrong note and the meaning can change entirely! This makes Cantonese Pop both a challenge and a delight to perform. Our host Holly L. will bring us these iconic translated songs, both in Cantonese and the original in English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese and so on. Come and join us to see how many you recognise! Age 6+
