Join artist and filmmaker Catherine Yass as she discusses her latest film 'Flood Barrier' at Eastbury Manor House in Barking. This thought-provoking film showcases a colossal guillotine-like structure, known as the Barking Creek Flood Barrier, which has gained newfound urgency in our battle against the climate crisis. With an anticipated increase in flooding in East London in the years to come (according to a Climate Central environmental study in 2021), this film couldn't be more timely. Catherine Yass, a Turner Prize nominee in 2002, is renowned for her unique approach to photography and filmmaking. Through the manipulation of camera angles and color distortion, she challenges established power dynamics. In 'Flood Barrier', Yass employs her visual language to offer viewers a fresh perspective on the structure and its surroundings, highlighting the pressing environmental and political issues it represents. The release of 'Flood Barrier' coincides with the 70th anniversary of The Great Flood of 1953, considered one of Britain's most devastating natural disasters of the 20th century. This film, part of the broader public program 'Breaking Waves', aims to raise awareness of the connection between our current climate crisis and our industrial heritage.
