Exeter Seminar, Chronic Pain Syndromes | Hotel du Vin Exeter

Exeter Seminar, Chronic Pain Syndromes | Hotel du Vin Exeter

Sep 23, 2025 (UTC+1)
Exeter
Cultural Experiences
Chronic Pain Syndromes: Advances in Nutritional Assessment, Mechanism-based Management and Evidence-Based Analgesics Chronic pain is one of the most widespread health problems, with up to 43% of people in the UK reporting that they experience chronic pain, of which 10−14% report moderate to severely disabling chronic pain. Conditions in which pain itself has become the primary disease include generalised chronic musculoskeletal pain, low-back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic headache or migraine, generalised chronic musculoskeletal pain and abdominal pain. The biology and pathophysiology of chronic pain is diverse and highly individual; however, there are important shared mechanisms across seemingly disparate clinical conditions that could help identify mechanism-based as opposed to symptom-based treatments, improving personalisation and outcomes. This seminar is an update on the clinical management of chronic pain from a personalised functional perspective. Topics include nutritional assessment of drivers of chronic pain, nutritional neuropathies, mechanism-based management including immunological, mitochondrial, redox and genetic biomarkers as well as evidence-based nutritional analgesics, including clinical use and safety. Learning objectives: Review the pathophysiology of chronic primary pain from a personalised, mechanism-based perspective. Understand shared mechanisms of musculoskeletal pain, low-back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic headache, migraine, generalised chronic musculoskeletal pain and abdominal pain. Evaluate dietary and nutritional causes of chronic pain including nutritional neuropathies (excess or inadequate intake of specific nutrients). Identify biomarkers (including nutritional, immune, redox, mitochondrial, and genetic) that can aid personalisation. Update on clinical evidence for food-based and nutritional supplement interventions. Explore how interventions can be personalised to those most likely to respond. All attendees will receive: 2-hours of CPD approved education Lecture notes Supplementary research papers Dinner and drinks Free sample products Expert speaker: Benjamin I. Brown, ND Ben is founder and director of the Nutritional Medicine Institute, an educational, advocacy and research group committed to advancing the science and practice of nutritional medicine. An internationally acclaimed lecturer, Ben is host of Positive Health Podcast, on the academic advisory board and a guest lecturer at BCNH College of Nutrition and Health, and regularly speaks at major educational institutions and international conferences for health professionals. Ben is a consultant for Pure Encapsulations. He is editor of the Nutritional Medicine Journal, contributing editor of Integrative Healthcare and Applied Nutrition Magazine, on the editorial board for Nutrition Evidence, author of The Digestive Health Solution, has contributed textbook chapters, and had research published in journals including Gastrointestinal Disorders, Alternative Therapies Health and Medicine, Nutrients, and Nutrition Reviews. Cultural Experiences
There's a lot to pack into your visit to Home Farm... Welcome talk and hear the intriguing history of the Quicke family. Step into our Dairy Viewing Room and learn how our cheesemakers expertly craft each truckle by hand. Whilst in the Dairy Viewing room there will be a tutored cheese tasting, where you'll enjoy the complexity and diversity of the Quicke's range. Whizz around our cheese stores and see how we age our clothbound cheddar, learn about our unique mould garden and the traditional skill of grading cheese. Hear from one of our Farm Team about how our cows are so special and see our milking parlour. Pop to the Quicke's Cheese Shop to do some shopping and pick up a free tote bag. After all that exploring and adventuring you'll be ready for lunch. The Beer Engine (a short drive down the road from our farm) will be serving up a seasonal two-course lunch, featuring Quicke’s cheese (the lunch is included in the price of the tour). Please note due to scheduling, it is not always possible to see the cheesemaking. Important information to read before booking: Home Farm is a working farm so there are a few things we’d like to remind you of before you book. The route around the farm is likely to be muddy and uneven, so please bring appropriate footwear such as wellies or walking boots. With our changeable British weather, it’s also sensible to bring waterproofs and extra layers. Please note that the cheese stores stay cool even in the summer, so you might want an extra layer in there too. Unfortunately, dogs are not invited on the tour. Children over the age of 12 are welcome (with tickets), but please bear in mind that they need to be able to complete the farm walk. The route is not suitable for wheelchairs. Cancellations/Refunds 1 .We do not provide refunds once you have completed a booking. All bookings are final. 2. We reserve the right to cancel the event at any point. In the event that we have to cancel a tour, we will contact you on the day before the tour to arrange a refund/gift voucher/rearrange to attend another tour (dependent on availability). Working with Dreams | Iron Mill College

Working with Dreams | Iron Mill College

Oct 3, 2025 (UTC+1)
Exeter
Cultural Experiences
Dreaming is a common experience for many people. Understanding more about our dreams and learning how to reflect on them is enriching for personal life as well as for our professional work. Our interest in dreams is ancient and goes back as far as records began. There are numerous references to dreams in the Bible and other religious texts. Bion, (1962) mentions dreams as a contact barrier between the conscious and unconscious mind, which reminds me of the image of a gateway providing both a protective defence yet access. This paradox is partly what draws us to the enigmatic quality of dreams and can be both fascinating and frustrating all at the same time. This workshop will consider the resources and relevance in working with dreams. I draw on ideas from Jungian psychoanalysis, as well as relational psychotherapy and transactional analysis to provide a structure for working with dreams in a meaningful and respectful way. Participants are invited to bring a dream of their own or a dream from a client that they wish to explore further. Learning Outcomes: Introduction to our human interest in dreaming Basic ideas from Freud and Jung Input of clinical examples and practice as a relational psychotherapist Structure of working through a dream for personal use and/or clinical practice Discussion and exploration in small groups and large group Key Benefits: Interest, insight, and developing skills for practice. About the Tutor: Karen Minikin BA (Hons) Counselling, MSc Psychotherapy, Dip in Supervision, Training and Supervising Transactional Analyst. Karen is a qualified counsellor and psychotherapist with over twenty years of clinical practice. Her work with dreams is integral to her work as a relational and radical practitioner and author. Target Audience: Practising counsellors and psychotherapists. Ticket sales will close on Wednesday 1st October 2025 at 4pm. This is an in-person workshop and we will review arrangements 2 weeks' before the event and inform you of any changes. Information Source: Iron Mill College CPD | eventbrite

Welcome to Call of War!, a Warhammer: The Old World two-day gaming event taking place on the 4th and 5th of October 2025. This event will feature 4 battles over two days against opponents in a battle to control the lands of the border princes. The border princes are in ruins, the old world has been invaded; Kings, warlords, chieftains, barons, and would-be emperors gather their strength and make their moves. War calls in the old world! What will you need? · A 2500pt Warhammer the old world army, chosen from the forces or fantasy, ravening hordes, or any pdf "legacy" armies. Note that ALL armies are "legal", including all “legacy” armies. Alternative forces in the arcane journals are also fair game, as are any armies of infamy or alternate lists released by games workshop in white dwarf or other publications. Please note that this is not a competitive or tournament event are there will be no prizes for smashing your opponent. It is likely that there will be a higher demographic of more casual players so entering the event with the idea of smashing everyone with the most tuned up army you can is not really the right approach. All of the legacy army lists may be played using the Square based renegade legacy pack found at www.squarebased.com . Please make it clear to your opponents if you are choosing to use this, and if you are, then use the rules in their entirety, you can’t pick and choose! · Skaven specifically may also choose to use the Always strikes first unofficial skaven arcane journal for army building, which is available here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1I64QnnXHOQal-O3IqAPps1MUWtBvUkyO/view?usp=sharing · All armies must be fully painted and based. See more below in regard to what is "fully painted and based" · Your army list, written in a legible format, either digitally or on paper. If you use an app like battlescribe or old world builder please ensure that you print out the list in a format that is easily legible or ensure your device is charged and accessible. · All the dice and templates you require, including scatter and artillery dice if your army requires it or might require it (in the case of spells) · All the books and PDFs required to play your army, and the Warhammer: the old world rulebook. If you bring a digital copy of anything please remember to bring a charger and keep your digital device charged! · A tape measure (please note that whippy sticks shouldn't be used for measuring without your opponents consent. Using them as an offensive weapon is also optional and again requires the consent of the recipient of the whippy stick strike.) ·(optional) A fluff piece for your army, this can be as long or short as you like, it's just a bit of background for your army and your characters, who they are and why they're there. Feel free to print these or hand write them in lavish, overly done medieval script. A note on bases : base sizes won't be a problem for this event, if you have models from older editions of Warhammer fantasy then you will not be expected to rebase them. If you have built a new army and want to be able to use it in older editions and so have smaller bases, it again doesn't matter. If you have a mixture of old and new base sizes, it won't matter. If you can't seem to find a resolution or you would like to ask a question regarding base sizes, please feel free to contact me in advance or on the day. Blatant abuse of this (such as a dragon on a tiny base, or infantry on absolutely massive bases) may be met with you being asked to remove that model from the event and use another model instead. If one isn't available then you will have to play with less points or change your list. To summarise, please be sensible. The boxout "base sizes (designers note)" on page 98 of the rulebook is to be ignored. Note that if you have smaller base sizes you will be far more vulnerable to template weapons and effects. If you wish to use base size adapting movement trays, please make it clear with your opponent how bit your bases “should” be when it comes to base contact and templates, and stick with this. The games : each day will consist of 2 games of Warhammer: the old world against a randomly matched opponent. Each game will be a bespoke scenario unique to the event, but there will be the option to play a “standard” scenario from the main rulebook if you and opponent should prefer "Fully painted and based" All armies for the event are required to be fully painted and based. This doesn't mean you have to get your army to a golden demon standard or even a particularly high quality. But it will need to be done to a very basic tabletop standard. This means a few colours, no bare plastic, resin, or metal, and some form of texture, paint, or effect on the base. If you're unsure of what this amounts to then please free to contact me at exewargaming@gmail.com or @exewargaming on Instagram to get clarification. Or put something in the watsapp group Model requirements, proxies and counts as There is no requirement for your models to be “GW official” for this event. Feel free to arrive with a fully 3D printed army, an army made from third party sources, or fully made with citadel plastic, resin, and metal kits. Aslong as a model is clear in what it is supposed to represent, that’s good enough. If you’ve got any doubts then feel free to contact me or put your question in the watsapp group (ideally with a picture so everyone gets to see your awesome models!) Awards: -Best army: There will be an award for a player voted best army. This might be painting, modelling, theme, composition or just overall coolness. Voting will take place on day 1 -Most sporting: there will be an award for the player voted most sporting. This will be the player who gains the most "favourite game" votes over the weekend -Best single model: Players will vote for a favourite single model on day 2. The winner of this vote will also walk away with an award. Tea, coffee, snacks, food, and amenities: There will be tea and coffee available all day. The venue has a bar that may be open at some point during the event but don't count on it. There are ample toilet facilities on site. You are welcome to bring your own snacks, drinks and food, but please be respectful of the venue and don't leave rubbish on the floor or the surrounding area There are two chip shops within 5 minutes walk, a third chip shop within 10 minutes walk, 2 corner shops, a pub, and several takeaways within 5 minutes walk. There is also a large Sainsbury's 5 minutes drive up the road. Delivery services are also available in the area UCG gaming centre is also about 3 minutes walk down the street incase you need paints, glue, or wish to pick up orders on the day or throughout the weekend. It is also open Friday evening until late for those that might wish to get a practice game in. Table space is limited so advance booking is strongly advised.Welcome to Call of War!, a Warhammer: The Old World two-day gaming event taking place on the 4th and 5th of October 2025. Schedule: Both days will start at 10:00 with game 1 starting at 10:30 and running until 13:30. There will then be 45 minutes for lunch, although you can play into your lunch or stop early for food if you and your opponent want to. Once you have finished game 1, please set your armies up for best army voting. After lunch, please submit your vote for best army. Game 2 will start at 14:30 and run until 17:30. This is not a hard dice down on day 1 so do not feel that you have to rush if you are going to be able to pack up your stuff by 18:30. You can also leave your things at the venue but this will be entirely at your own risk. Saturday the venue will be available until 18:30 at which time it will be locked up and those wishing to join may come to a meal at a restaurant(tbd) in Exeter. Any models or possessions left in the venue overnight are entirely at the owners own risk. Game 3 will start at 10:30 on Sunday and run until 13:30, with 45 minutes for lunch. What does our history of murder tell us about Britain and what it means to be British? In this powerful new live event, Professor David Wilson, one of the UK’s leading criminologists, brings his latest book A History of Modern Britain in 20 Murders 1885-2025 to the stage. Known for his gripping storytelling and deep insight into criminal behaviour, Wilson explores murder cases in our nation’s history to discover the times in which they occurred—and what they continue to reveal about Britain today. Some of the cases he considers are well known – Jack the Ripper, James Bulger, Sarah Everard - others less so – The Carbon Copy Murders, Helen Priestly, Rachel Dobkin - with Wilson guiding audiences through more than a century of murders that shaped public consciousness, challenged our sense of self and reflected changing attitudes, values, and fears. Spanning the fall of the British Empire to the present day – with a case discussed in depth on stage - this unique event weaves together true crime and social history in a way that is both unique, enlightening and unforgettable. A must-see for fans of history, criminology, and gripping real-life stories! Exeter in the 1920s was a place of huge contrasts, with both ‘Sunshine’ and ‘Shadows’. Shadows of unemployment, poverty and war-time trauma clouded the decade, but many people were able to enjoy new houses and new opportunities to go out and enjoy themselves. The Festival of Devon in the 1920s is showcasing these different aspects in a series of events in Exeter through early October, which includes this evening’s historical entertainment at The Mint Methodist Centre. The main event of the evening will be a dramatic presentation, The Best of Times, the Worst of Times , based on the lives of real Exeter people from the West Quarter. The cast of characters who will be recounting their personal stories include amongst others a landlady, a badger expert, an ice-cream manufacturer, and a victim of childhood polio. To get us in a 1920s mood, the evening begins with a swing. In a film by John Tomkinson for the Festival of Devon in the 1920s, the South West Lindy Hoppers are shown dancing the (rather shocking) 1920s’ dance imported from the United States, the Charleston, in Exeter’s Historic Guildhall. If you are a member of the Exeter Local History Society, tickets are free for you - please select a £0 ticket when registering for the event. If you are not a member of the Society, there is a small (£5) entry fee. If you would like to attend as a non-member, please select a non-member ticket when registering. More information about the Society and its events can be found on the Society's website at www.exeterlocalhistorysociety.co.uk .
