This workshop, delivered on line, is a must for all Coaches, Children's Officers, and Designated Liaison Persons (DLP). It aims to educate participants on the implementation of best practices in safeguarding and protecting the welfare of children involved in sport. The course focuses on the Sport Ireland Code, which has been adopted and implemented by governing bodies of sports, clubs, local sports partnerships, and community/voluntary groups since 2000. The adoption of this code at the grassroots level has resulted in the protection of young people and leaders, creating a safe and inclusive environment for all. By completing this workshop, adults can act as positive role models for young people, ensuring their early experiences in sport are positive and enjoyable. Regardless of ability, gender, social class, race, or any other factors, it is important to provide young people with the necessary skills and support to remain involved in sports and physical activities throughout their lives. The Safeguarding 1 Online Workshop will be conducted through the Zoom video and audio conferencing service. The Safeguarding 1 Online Workshop on 16th April 2024 offers a comprehensive Child Welfare & Protection Basic Awareness Course. This 3-hour workshop, conducted online through Zoom, is a mandatory requirement for Coaches, Children's Officers, and Designated Liaison Persons (DLP). The workshop aims to educate participants on the importance of implementing best practices in safeguarding the welfare of children involved in sports. Since 2000, the Sport Ireland Code has been widely adopted and implemented by governing bodies of sports, clubs, local sports partnerships, and community/voluntary groups. This adoption has resulted in the protection of young people and their leaders at grassroots level. It is crucial to provide young people with the necessary knowledge and skills to remain engaged in sports throughout their adult lives. Additionally, it is essential to ensure that their early experiences in sports are positive and enjoyable, regardless of their ability, gender, social class, or race. Adults, both volunteers and professionals, play a significant role in providing these positive experiences by acting as role models when interacting with young people. The work of Children's Officers, both at the club and national level, is particularly instrumental in implementing the Sport Ireland Code. Building on this valuable work will help ensure that all young people view sports and physical activity as important aspects of their lives that they will continue to embrace in adulthood. Jimmy has been playing guitar since he was 7 years old, initially with his father’s dance bands and later when his growing interest in rock and blues led him to form his own band at school. The first Jimmy Smyth band was formed when he was in his early teens, and opened for Thin Lizzy, Bees Make Honey, Horslips, and Frankie Miller. He was a guitarist/singer with The Bogey Boys from 1979 to 1983 and recorded several singles and two albums. He featured heavily in ‘Best Guitarist’ polls on Hot Press Magazine around this time, alongside guitarists like the Edge and Rory Gallagher. He is a Grammy-Nominee for his work with US Artist Toni Childs. The Safeguarding 3 - Designated Liaison Person (DLP) workshop is a crucial component of the Child Welfare & Protection Training Programme. Individuals appointed to the DLP role in a club must have completed the Safeguarding 1 Workshop and attend the NEW Designated Liaison Person 3-hour workshop. While it is permissible for one person to hold both the Club Children's Officer and DLP positions, separating these roles is recommended for best practice. The DLP is tasked with handling any child protection concerns within the organization and is responsible for reporting any suspicions or allegations of child abuse to the relevant authorities. The Designated Liaison Person should ideally be a senior figure within the club, but in cases where this is not feasible, the Club Children's Officer can assume the role provided the responsibilities are clearly defined. The adoption of the Sport Ireland Code by sports governing bodies and clubs has significantly enhanced the protection of young individuals and leaders. The upcoming Safeguarding 3 Online Workshop on the 18th of November 2024 will be conducted virtually via Zoom.
