Serengeti | Gas Station Art Centre
Nov 1, 2024 (UTC-6)ENDED
Winnipeg
NAfro Dance is pleased to present 'Serengeti', a provocative and exciting dance piece. Choreographer Casimiro Nhussi, challenges the audience to DO SOMETHING about environmental issues facing all living creatures. I’m living in a sad and terrifying nightmare. Somehow, every time I try to wake, the nightmare is still there. I see the land of my birth – Africa - and everything has changed. The land is red and dry, the rivers too, the trees are naked, and the animals are skinny and sad. There isn’t enough green land for all of us. There is a struggle between the natural, wild world and the domestic, structured world. Between them and us. Some of the animals are dying out. Some of the animals are trapped in cages and exported to places unknown. They are crying for a green land and for their freedom. But for us who go to see the animals in their cages, the cry for freedom, has become a sound of pleasure, a sound of amusement. This nightmare has to stop. Because I don’t think it is only my nightmare, I think it is humankind’s nightmare. We need to wake up and do something about it. We have to learn to live together to co-exist. -CN- IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Come early so you can find parking. Box Office opens one hour before the event starts if you prefer to purchase tickets at the door (some will always be available). Seating in the theatre starts 20 minites before the show begins. You can show your e-ticket on your phone or print it if you prefer.

Sing Me a Song You've (Never) Heard Before | West End Cultural Centre
Nov 16, 2024 (UTC-6)ENDED
Winnipeg
The Winnipeg Arts Council is proud to present Sing me a song you’ve (never) heard before, an exploration of words that give us place, a sense of home in the unknown.
It’s all part of City of Song: a celebration of Winnipeg’s 150th birthday taking place throughout 2024. City of Song showcases the best of Winnipeg’s talents and creates spaces for Winnipeggers to engage in the power of singing with friends and neighbours across the city.
Featuring artists from across disciplines, Sing me a song… is the world premiere of Too Far to Walk, a song cycle composed by Karen Sunabacka with poetry by John Samson Fellows. Too Far to Walk reimagines some of Samson Fellows’s familiar lyrics and introduces some new ones that have never before been performed, as operatic art songs that reflect on interconnectedness in this city.
This exciting new work was commissioned with the generous support of the Winnipeg Arts Council and City of Song, and will be performed by Lisa Rumpel and tenor Aaron Hutton, two of the city’s most renowned and in-demand operatic musicians. The night will also include a special collaboration between Winnipeg Poet Laureate Chimwemwe Undi and cellist Nathan Krahn, as well as a performance by acclaimed singer-songwriter Theresa Thor.
