Saturday Storytime: Dreamtime Stories & Craft with Aunty Michelle (3-7 yrs) is an exciting event taking place at the East Maitland Library in East Maitland. This special program, led by renowned Storyteller Aunty Michelle Napanangka Earl, offers a unique opportunity to learn about First Nations concepts, cultural perspectives, and history through engaging stories and craft activities.
Aunty Michelle, a proud Darkinjung woman with Wonnarua ties, is a local artist and basket weaver from Kilipiynpiyn Workshops. With a personal connection to the Hunter region, she passionately teaches and celebrates the traditional Aboriginal culture of the communities across the valley. The knowledge and skills she shares have been passed down for thousands of years, ensuring that the rich visual and oral history of her ancient culture is preserved and not forgotten.
Join Aunty Michelle on the first Saturday of each month during the school term for this free program. Bookings are essential as spaces are limited. All children aged 3-7 years must have a ticket and be accompanied by a responsible adult. Materials will be provided, making it a hassle-free experience for everyone.

Japanese Stitching/Bookmaking | The Cottage at Lake Lily

Join the Japanese Stitching/Bookmaking workshop at The Cottage at Lake Lily in Maitland, Florida on December 2, 2023. This instructive session, led by Ryan Price, will teach participants the art of creating their own sketchbooks using traditional Japanese book binding techniques. The cost of attending the workshop is $105, with an additional $25 material fee. Please note that the material fee must be paid in cash directly to the instructor on the day of the workshop.
During the workshop, participants will learn how to make a Japanese-style book from start to finish. The instructor will guide them in organizing the materials required for the sketchbook, including properly sizing the paper and creating the cover. Additionally, the instructor will demonstrate how to thread the needle and stitch the pattern on an example book. Participants will then have the opportunity to practice their own stitching on computer paper before embarking on their own bookmaking journey.
At the end of the workshop, participants will have acquired valuable knowledge about Japanese stitching for bookbinding and walk away with their very own handmade sketchbook or journal. This workshop is open to individuals of all skill levels who have an interest in exploring the art of Japanese bookmaking.
