Shrouds: Rituals of making and wrapping What if, after we die, we were wrapped, rather than boxed? The softness and flow of fabric creating a gentle, evocative outline, instead of hard edges, solid barriers and firm lines, separating us from our person. There is something about the quiet simplicity and integrity of a shroud that offers an intriguing alternative to a traditional coffin. Rituals of closure and goodbye could involve folding, covering, tucking, tying, or sewing. Working with textiles, using existing skills or learning new ones, can give us rich opportunities for life tending and grief tending, weaving our stories into our own personal ceremonial burial cloth. Creative processes can invite others to contribute, bringing friends, family and community together in the cycles of life and death. A shroud can be folded and stored, or hung like art, or cuddled in comfort, until the time when it is needed. This session will explore the possibilities, in theory and practice, of working with natural fibres and fabrics, using ancient processes and techniques that can be applied to create beautiful, bespoke, evocative, earth-loving burial shrouds. Cal De Cabaret presents a vibrant and inclusive community cabaret in Todmorden at The Weavers Arms on June 1st, 2024. This event showcases a diverse range of talent from the Calder Valley, featuring music, comedy, drag performances, burlesque, pottery demonstrations, and theater acts. The cabaret aims to create a welcoming and non-judgmental space for all participants to express themselves freely. Join us on 2nd November in the Gothic surrounds of the Unitarian Church, Todmorden, in the valley of lights, for the first incantation of Unterranean… On this date, in this magical place, the veil could not be thinner. Expect visuals and rituals, music and magic, performance and procession, heritage and history, art, conversation and film. Unterranean will bring us all together to call on all other worlds and wake old souls, to slip between the rifts as the veils open up all around us… Immerse yourself in mystical merriment. Bring your intentions and leave what no longer serves you. Bathe in light and sound and imbibe nature’s trancendental potency. From 1pm we begin with a cacao ceremony and sound bath, followed by conversations and readings. There will be visual, light and sound art throughout, tarot, food and drink, and an immersive spiritual confessional with Story Exists, where you can share your spiritual and supernatural experiences, to feed into their full improvised performance that evening. We invite the Calderdale Community to gather in the darkest month, in the spirit solidarity and hope, to hold space and raise vital funds for our friends in Palestine. All proceeds will be shared between *Amplify Gaza - Community Resilience Project who are partnered with Youth Vision Society *Battir Cooperative - via The Union of Agricultural Work Comittees Money will be spent distributing food and support to people in Gaza. Lizzy is a Lecoq trained clown and facilitator. She uses a blend of Lecoq, clown through mask and play techniques to create safe spaces to explore inner clown worlds.
