SCATTERBRAIN MAGAZINE : ISSUE 4 LAUNCH | Substance Skatepark Brooklyn
Aug 26, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Street
5 bands. 9 vendors. 16 artists. Come roll up and ~roll up~ at Substance Skatepark August 26th. When we think of Hollywood, California in the 90s and early 2000s, around the time many of us were born, it’s all glitz and glam and paparazzi. The flashing lights are almost Times Square-esque. Some might say Times Square is the Hollywood Boulevard of New York, but they’re wrong. Maybe it was so before the commercial redevelopment of the 1990s, with which came the destruction of what was a hub for erotica and queer spaces. Hollywood Boulevard’s kin neighborhoods in the early 2000s were probably the East Village and Soho. Still a hub for socialites, artists, and tourists, these areas remain star-studded and shiny. But anyone who’s lived here knows that the real pulse of New York isn’t at Carbone or Kith or even KGB anymore—it’s in the skate parks, local shows, and artist markets. It’s in the crowd gathered around a boom-box on the street, passing around a joint, cigarette, or these days, a Cann (not sponsored… yet). Our boulevard stars are the brightly numbered circles of the subway lines that connect our communities across boroughs. This generation has forgone celebrity obsession in favor of a collective of individuals. Outside of the flashing lights and billboards, who are we to each other? We show up, we show out, and we make the boulevard wherever we go. If you catch a glimpse, say hello. There’s no red velvet rope blocking the street. We’re all welcome here. Skate, dance and enjoy what the boulevard has to offer August 26th.
