Tapestry Weaving: Weaving the View with Irene Evison | Ardgour Ales
Jun 8, 2025 (UTC+0)
Fort William
We’ll take our inspiration from the colours, shapes and textures of the lochside landscape, using a simple frame and selection of yarns. Think of it as a combination between relaxation, mindful creativity and appreciation of the outdoors. Create your own tapestry weaving doodle based on the natural world around us, a tiny sampler to take away. No experience necessary. All materials and equipment provided. Children over 10 welcome when accompanied by an adult. Led by Irene Evison, Nearly Wild Weaving https://nearlywildweaving.wordpress.com/ @nearlywildweaving Inspired by the natural world, one of my favourite things is sitting somewhere outdoors ‘weaving the view’, distilling key elements of what I see to create a tapestry in just a few hours. When I look at the tapestry afterwards, I’m reminded of the birdsong, breeze and sense of wellbeing that I experienced while I was weaving. My portfolio also includes much more in-depth studio-designed pieces, each the product of many hour, days and weeks of planning and weaving. And I love inspiring other people to be creative through the medium of tapestry weaving, often through participatory outdoor weaving experiences, but also through workshops and community projects. USEFUL TO KNOW..... We'll be based at Ardgour Ales, in Ardgour. We’ll be outdoors, soaking up the atmosphere of the environment around us, so come prepared for any weather. We’ll have shelters, so unless it’s blowing a hoolie from the north, we’ll be able to carry on regardless. With our base at Ardgour Ales, you’ll be able to refresh your creative energies with tea, coffee and snacks throughout the day, and of course their own craft ales will be available from to enjoy. Ideal if you have a partner, friends or family who are less interested in the art! Check out what's available at https://www.ardgourales.scot/ The Brewery is a short walk from the Corran Ferry, which is free for foot passengers. On a Saturday, the first ferry runs from Corran is at 6.30am and the last ferry leaves Ardgour at 9.20pm, and on Sunday it's a later start at 8.30am from Ardgour/8.45am from Corran, and a 9.20pm last ferry.

Ring of Steall Skyrun | Glen Nevis Youth Hostel
Jun 14, 2025 (UTC+0)
Fort William
The Ring of Steall is a classic round of four Munros above Glen Nevis, Lochaber. The route involves two fantastic and technical (grade 1) ridges with views over Ben Nevis. In recent years, the loop has gained worldwide popularity on account of the Salomon Ring of Steall Skyrace which used to take place over these mountains (but this event is no more!) The classic 16km/1700m round starts and finishes in Glen Nevis and includes all the best parts of the longer/previous skyrace route. Despite still being the official race recce provider for Skyline Scotland*, this guided skyrun from Girls on Hills is not associated any skyrace and is therefore not a race recce. Instead our group of runners will enjoy a sociable and relaxed journey around this scenic route, with plenty of walking, plus stopping for photos and lunch along the way (weather permitting!) There are no prerequisites but you should have a good level of hill fitness and some fell running experience (ideally your would be capable of comfortably running 10km on hilly trails) to get the most out of this guided skyrunning experience. But you don't need to be fast! Upon booking you will receive a full kit list and details or where to meet your Girls on Hills guide. *Skyline Scotland will is set to return in 2025 (Septmber 20th) and will be based at Nevis Range, Fort William. Ask your Girls on Hills guide about the new races from Skyline Scotland or see our guided race recces online. We can't wait to show you this local favourite. It's gonna knock your socks off!

Drawing the Mountains with Jack Spowart | The North Face Car Park
Feb 17, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Fort William
Join Scottish Highlands based mountain artist Jack Spowart on a morning hike to learn the fundamentals of landscape drawing. During the workshop, Jack will share his approach to creating artwork, the tools he uses, and how to identify a strong composition. He will also explain how he turned his passion for drawing into a successful career as a freelance illustrator and artist.
Once we reach the drawing location, you will learn how to select compelling compositions in the environment and quickly create thumbnail sketches. Jack will guide you in building detail using pencil and confidently transitioning to fine-line pen work. You will explore various mark-making techniques, including stippling, bordering, cross-hatching, and line work, to add depth, detail, and interest to your drawings.
Although we won't be able to complete a full drawing due to the winter temperatures, Jack will hold a competition after the workshop. Participants will have the opportunity to win a signed and framed print from Jack's collection. All you have to do is finish your drawing using the knowledge gained during the workshop and submit it to him. Jack will showcase your drawings on his social media platforms, and the winner will be determined by his audience.
All necessary materials will be provided, but please dress warmly and wear appropriate footwear for the day's conditions. The workshop will go ahead regardless of the weather, and if necessary, we may spend some time indoors. You will be contacted with further details if this is the case. We will also provide a recommended personal kit list and joining instructions closer to the event date.
This Creatives workshop is hosted by the Scottish Mountaineering Press in collaboration with Wild Roots Guiding as part of the Fort William Mountain Festival. Spaces for this workshop are limited to 12 participants.
About Jack Spowart:
Jack Spowart is an artist and illustrator based in the Scottish Highlands. He left his career as an art teacher to pursue his dream of building a creative business. Adventure, sustainability, and happiness are at the core of his work as he navigates the complexities of the art world. Jack's current artwork is characterized by attention to detail and precision. He seeks out intriguing compositions in nature, aiming for balance and intrigue. Drawing inspiration from his own photographs of various locations, he captures the character of each place through a process that starts with a rough pencil sketch. If the composition comes together, he adds more details in pencil before moving on to inking. His methodical approach involves building depth, shadow, and atmosphere with lines and dots.

Writing Workshops - Session 3 ‘Performance Poetry and Finding your Voice’ | The Highland Bookshop
Nov 21, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Fort William
Despite most people’s formative experiences of poems being reading them in school, poetry has always been an oral tradition, with poems meant to be read out loud. In the 21st Century, a number of poets have sought to push the sound of poetry to the forefront, with excellent writers such as Akala, Kae Tempest and George the Poet, blurring the boundaries between rap, music and poetry. In the city, open mic nights, spoken word events and competitive poetry ‘slams’ have sprung up, developing a real spoken word scene that is helping new voices to be heard. For this workshop we welcome a little bit of this scene to Fort William, with acclaimed North-East poet, spoken word artist and writer Jo Gilbert leading the session. Jo’s poetry, short stories and flash fiction has been widely published in journals and anthologies, including Northwords Now, and Poetry Scotland. According to the Scottish Poetry Library, North-East Scots, or Doric, features heavily in their work, alongside varied themes – shining a light into dark corners, looking at life through a working-class lens, nature in urban areas, music and art, grief and loss and everything in between. Continuing on from our successful first series of Creative Writing Evening Classes from earlier this year, the Highland Bookshop offers another five writing workshops. Whether you are a total beginner or someone looking for a bit of inspiration in order to get you writing again, these workshops will have something for you. Covering a range of themes and genres, each individual session will work in its own right - but attending more sessions will allow you to build on the skills and regular practice you will be engaging in. (And if you book all five sessions, you will receive a discounted rate.) Thursday, November 21st at 7pm Individual Session is £40 per person. Book all five sessions for £150 (so £30 a session) Workshops are from 7 - 9.30 pm with a break half way for refreshments.

For those readers and writers who want to learn more, in the second half of the session, from 7-8pm, she will be hosting a creative writing masterclass focused on the short story. This will be a rare opportunity in Lochaber to meet and learn from such a distinguished writer, of both fiction and non-fiction: it will really be something to inspire for a dark January evening. Entry to the Book event and Masterclass discussion There are Two tiers to the tickets. Tier 1: £12 which includes your own copy of Pretty Ugly which Gunn will be happy to sign and free entry to the writing Masterclass. Tier 2: £5 voucher to Book event but NOT the Master Class. Kirsty Gunn published her first novel with Faber in 1994 and since then has written five works of fiction and three short story collections. Her books have been translated in over a dozen territories, been widely anthologised, been broadcast, turned into film and dance theatre, and have also won multiple prizes and awards including the Edge Hill Prize for Short Stories, the Scottish Book of the Year, as well as a shortlisting for the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award. She is also Professor of Writing Practice and Study at the University of Dundee, where she established and directs the writing programme. From publicity for Pretty Ugly: Contradictions (both real and apparent), oppositions, enigmas, provocations, challenges—this is the kind of material that makes a life, and is the kind of material that, in fiction, one is never quite sure of. With Pretty Ugly, Kirsty Gunn reminds us again that she is a master of just such material, presenting ambiguity and complication as the essence of the storyteller’s endeavour.
