Shannon Gaye w/ Kristian Alexandrov Band - Inlet Theatre Music Series | Inlet Theatre
Dec 14, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
Inlet
Powerhouse Singer/Percussionist Shannon Gaye and Bulgarian Juno-nominated pianist Kristian Alexandrov join forces to present an evening of soulful seasonal tunes, featured on Shannon’s holiday CD “Songs of Joy & Peace”. You might recognize Shannon & Kristian from their popular, high-energy show R.E.S.P.E.C.T. celebrating trailblazing women of Soul, Rhythm & Blues, which they’ve performed at the Inlet Theatre. After many years touring across Canada as a featured artist in Tom Jackson’s Huron Carole Christmas Concert Series, Shannon & Kristian recently recorded their own holiday CD - an intimate, classic album with piano and voice as the driving force. From the bluesy sass of “Merry Christmas Baby” and the gospel fervour of “Do You Hear What I Hear”, to jazz-infused tunes like “The Christmas Song” - Shannon is in full command of her voice. The hymn “Breath of Heaven” and original song “Winterlude” are perfect for a moody winter’s eve, haunting and ethereal. This dynamic duo and their stellar three-piece band (drums, bass, guitar) will take you on a festive, unforgettable musical journey. The union of these recording artists evolved naturally over the years - Shannon and Kristian’s collaborations on stage and in the studio have resulted in seven original CD’s and performances across Canada, the U.S. and Europe, as well as song placements in film and TV. “I wanted to record a Christmas CD featuring songs in the genres that I explore in my own original music - Soul, R&B and Jazz. I couldn’t resist adding a couple of traditional carols because they’re so beautifully written and challenging to sing,” Shannon explains. Shannon happened upon the title for this CD, “Songs of Joy & Peace”, as she was driving home and Joni Mitchell’s iconic tune “The River” came on the radio. The evocative opening phrase seemed a perfect fit: It’s coming on Christmas, they’re cutting down trees putting up reindeer and singing Songs of Joy & Peace.

From the humble beginnings of recording their first Ep on Vancouver Island in the late 1990s - using a dilapidated 1965 Chevy Nova as an isolation booth - to playing a 'by invitation only' event with Jeff Beck in California for Gretsch Guitars, you can say that Cousin Harley has come a long way. Together for almost 20 years, this powerful little trio has been setting stages on fire around the world and have been feature performers at musical gatherings from Las Vegas to Byron Bay. Always a festival favourite, they can explode like a active volcano, swing like the Basie band and holler like lonesome hillbilly in the back woods of the Appalachia all in a single show. The Paperboys - Inlet Theatre Music Series | Inlet Theatre
Mar 22, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Inlet
The Paperboys - Inlet Theatre Music Series Get ready for a night of foot-stomping tunes with The Paperboys at the Inlet Theatre! This in-person event promises to deliver high-energy music that will have you dancing in your seat. Don't miss out on this chance to experience their unique blend of Celtic, Bluegrass, and Latin sounds live. Grab your friends and make it a night to remember at the Inlet Theatre Music Series! When you think of Canadian music, who are the first contemporary artists that come to mind? Is it a globe-touring sextet that, in a single set, can be counted on to stomp through Celtic reels, traditional Mexican folk, fiddle tunes, New Orleans brass band music, classic pop songcraft, bluegrass, and even a philosophical waltz or two, before bringing it all home with a Latino/West African singalong? I didn’t think so. Is it a fearless, freewheeling band sometimes referred to as the “Los Lobos of Canada,” veterans of an estimated 4,300 shows since the band’s 1992 formation? What if I told you that this band doesn’t just exist—they flourish, and have been converting full concert halls of indifferent strangers into devoted fans for the last 30 years? The name of this musical collective is The Paperboys. They are a Canadian treasure. The heart of The Paperboys is a trio of gifted songwriters and musicians: Founder Tom Landa, a fedora-hatted vocalist/guitarist/bandleader who immigrated from Mexico to Canada in his teens; Kalissa Landa, a lifelong fiddler/vocalist with a preternatural command of melody; and Spirit of the West’s flautist/guitarist/vocalist Geoffrey Kelly, already a Canadian musical icon when he hopped on the P’boys bus in 1997. Though by no means a jam band, The Paperboys reinvent their show every time they step onstage. Once the band agrees on the opening song, there is no set list. The song finishes, the crowd reacts, Landa reads the room, and the journey begins. Every night. The world has changed seismically since 1992, but The Paperboys fan base has stuck with the band, and grown. “It goes beyond perseverance,” Landa says about the band’s legacy, “and into some kind of connectivity and resonance we have with people. We’ve created a community.” Though best known for their live show, The Paperboys also have another ace up their sleeve: A deep and impressive discography. The band has released 10 recordings—including the Juno Award-winning Molinos—receiving accolades from MOJO Magazine and fRoots Magazine along the way. They’ve been two-time recipients of the West Coast Music Award, composed scores for two films, and been nominated for a Leo Award for best original song in the Hong Kong/Canada film release, Lunch With Charles. Although perennially adored and praised by alternative media and national radio networks NPR and CBC, commercial success has eluded the band. Undaunted, The Paperboys have kept in perpetual motion, building a cult following through the impact of its incendiary live show and proud DIY spirit. Welcome to Mimosa in Concert as part of the Inlet Theatre Music Series! Get ready for an unforgettable night of music at the Inlet Theatre. Join us for a fantastic performance by the talented band Mimosa. This bilingual (French/English) Vancouver quintet draws on Jazz, Brazilian Sambas, French Chanson and Cabaret music to concoct its own unique sound: gorgeous melodies, quirky lyrics, incredible groove and sky-high improvisations. With four critically acclaimed Cds and festival appearances all over Canada (including the Vancouver and Montreal Jazz Festivals), they have become CBC favourites, selected first as the subject of a one-hour long documentary and more recently as one of four Western bands featured on television, radio and the web, in the popular “Mai de la chanson d’ici”. In September 2011 they also appeared on the French CBC show “Bien au show”, for their final episode. In 2012, Mimosa collaborated for the first time with dancers and a projectionist for a unique performance at the Sechelt Arts Festival. Recently, Mimosa toured the Okanagan with a brand new repertoire of originals and interesting arrangements of standards. They have performed at many festivals, including the Harmony Arts Festival, the Gibsons Jazz Festival, the Pender Harbour Jazz Festival, the Fort Langley Jazz Festival, Festijazz Rimouski, Festival du Voyageur, Winterruption, the Montreal and Vancouver Jazz Festival (many times) and numerous others. Mimosa’s music is composed predominantly by pianist Anna Lumiere, with contributions from and collaborations with other band members. Some of their compositions have been used in film and television (Rise of the Gargoyles, Mange ta ville, etc). Lumiere also received a IMA composition award for Hotel des peines perdues and some of her songs have been rearranged for choir (Echos du Pacifique). The band has just released their 4th album, “Bien ensemble” on the label Cellar Music (Cory Weeds, Vancouver), on March 29, 2024. French CBC has also done a 20 year retrospective in the form of a short documentary about the band (“Le bonheur, chanté par Mimosa”) The band is made up of Rebecca Shoichet, vocals, Anna Lumiere (piano and accordion), Karen Graves (sax, flute and vocals), Conrad Good (bass) and Bernie Arai (drums). Although every member of Mimosa is also active on the Canadian music scene in many other groups, the band is celebrating its 25th year anniversary in 2024 and has developed a unique performance that will take you on an unforgettable journey into time and sound.
