Pointbreak | Arthur’s Blues & Jazz Club

Jul 25, 2025 (UTC+0)
Arthur
Sports & Fitness
Pointbreak is an instrumental surf rock ‘n’ roll act from Dublin. A unique project formed in late 2014, with 3 EPs released over the years, “Get Wet!”, “Sing!” and “Turf Rock”. In 2024 the band released their first LP, “Ming Dynamite”, showcasing the band's expansion into a more diverse sonic palette, blending elements of garage, jazz, funk, and psychedelia into their classic surf sound. Music for a film that doesn’t exist. Renowned as a live band, they put on a high-energy show and have played hundreds of gigs around Ireland and abroad. Featuring musicians from the Jazz, Funk and Rockabilly scenes, Pointbreak has been featured on Dublin stages like Whelan’s, The Grand Social, The Button Factory, Sin É, The Harbour Bar and many more as headliners or supporting international acts. They have also been invited to many festivals (Knockanstockan, Dublin Rock ’n’ Roll Festival), international gigs (Italy, Scotland, Northern Ireland) and significant events (Dublin Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon Main Stage, opening for The Blizzards and Jerry Fish). The sound of Pointbreak is a raucous blend of soaking wet, twangy Fender guitars, screaming sax and a pulsating rhythm on the drums. Think Dick Dale, The Ventures and Link Wray with a jazz twist. Fine Art
Paintpouring is a really fun technique using different colours of acrylics mixed with safe chemicals that keep the colours from muddling together. We layer them up then tip them onto canvases or treated cardboard to make beautiful natural patterns that may remind you of cells and natural forms, under the sea, or perhaps outer space! Wear old clothes, bring an apron and be ready to play and have fun! Information Source: Catherine Jones | eventbrite

This is the follow up session to the colour mixing basics in March, or if you'd like to learn more about colour mixing than the basics you might already know! Now we'll look at using the primary colours of light to do colour mixiing- primary yellow, cyan and primary magenta. You'll get subtly different colours which can really pop, you'll mix beautiful purples and vibrant orange, and lime greens that sing! To compare with this we'll also have a little look at Zorn colur palette, used by the Swedish portrait artist Anders Zorn in the late 19th and early 20th century. You'llcome away with some colour wheels and strips and lots more ideas about how to manipulate colour in your own art! Please note there are only 3 spaces for this workshop as the Old Bell is a very cosy small studio space! And you'll get lots of individual attention to help you learn! Bataa was born and raised in Mongolia's capital city Ulan Bataar, as a child he became fascinated by music of his grandparents' generation, who lived a nomadic life in the steppe far from UB's urban sprawl. Around the fire In the evenings at a ger camp (known as a yurt in the west), entertainment came from playing animal bone games, story telling, singing and the sound of the horse head fiddle. Bataa became fascinated by the range of haunting and melodious tones that can be produced with just this simple two stringed instrument. As a teenager, Bataa took music lessons and trained in the centuries old technique of throat singing, he showed exceptional talent and now many believe he has become a master of this skill As can easily happen, the obligations of life got in the way, Bataa qualified and began working as an Electrical Engineer. But the lure of music was too strong and he quit his job to focus on performing full time. He has played theatres, venues and festivals throughout Mongolia and now his plan is to take the ethereal sound of the Mongolia steppe round the world, in the hope of entrancing audiences, just like at those nomadic campfires He will play a mix of traditional, contempary and western music He will alsp be joined by Dani Hurtado Information Source: Arthur's Blues & Jazz Club | eventbrite

River Daughter | Arthur’s Blues & Jazz Club

River Daughter is a jazz trio formed by vocalist Rufina Tishina, saxophonist Rory Fleming and guitarist Emily O’Rourke. These performers, each a graduate of DCU’s Jazz & Contemporary Music Course, have years of experience playing with various groups in the Irish jazz and indie scenes, including projects of their own. Each member of River Daughter has a variety of influences, but is unified by a willingness to explore what can be done with different musical setups. Vocals, sax and guitar may not be an unusual combo, but River Daughter draws much influence from the recordings of the Jimmy Giuffre 3, or John Zorn’s ‘News for Lulu’ trio, recordings in which the musical function of each instrument was never set in stone, and something new and surprising was always ready to fill in the space left by the absence of a rhythm section. With this ‘less is more’ philosophy, this trio aims to create a more intimate atmosphere during concerts, while still retaining the rhythmic energy of a traditional quartet or quintet. The combination of Rufina’s lyricism, Emily’s focused and distinct playing and Rory’s rhythm and tone creates a unique blend. The group’s repertoire includes a variety of standards and compositions from artists such as Bill Evans, Ornette Coleman, Emily Remler and more, as well as some originals, all arranged for this unique line up Information Source: Arthur's Blues & Jazz Club | eventbrite
