Naast schilder was hij namelijk huisbaas, schoonvader van schilder Jan Steen, hield hij van een gokje én... was hij (al dan niet per ongeluk) een oplichter. Toch heeft hij in zijn veelzijdige leven iets blijvends nagelaten dat we in Den Haag met trots kunnen koesteren: zijn indrukwekkende panorama van de stad uit 1650. In dit bijzondere schilderij, dat een indrukwekkende breedte van 4,60 meter heeft, verbeeldt Van Goyen Den Haag op z'n best. Hij vereeuwigde de bijzondere gebouwen zoals de Grote of Sint Jacobskerk, de Gevangenpoort en het Binnenhof, maar draaide met wat creatief schuiven aan de werkelijkheid om de stad nóg aantrekkelijker te maken.
