Join us as Indigenous relations expert BOB JOSEPH launches his new book 21 Things You Need to Know About Indigenous Self Government: A Conversation About Dismantling the Indian Act . Following the resounding successes of his previous books, 21 Things You May Not Know About The Indian Act and Indigenous Relations: Insights, Tips & Suggestions to Make Reconciliation a Reality , this latest book emphasizes the importance of discarding the Indian Act, as well as the seamlessness of the potential transition to self-government. Stemming from the hundreds of questions asked by readers of the original 21 Things You May Not Know About The Indian Act Joseph's new book sets out to open the conversation about dismantling the Indian Act and this launch is an opportunity for an open discussion about what that would look like. Given that 2026 will also mark 150 years since the Consolidated Indian Act of 1876, this discussion is more timely than ever. Bob Joseph is an initiated member of the Hamatsa Society and has inherited a chief’s seat in the Gayaxala (Thunderbird) clan, under the chief name K’axwsumala’galis. As Co-Founder and President of Indigenous Corporate Training Inc., he is a certified Master Trainer of Indigenous and Aboriginal relations, as well as a reputed author of several books and resources relating to working with Indigenous Peoples. While most pruning happens in the winter, for backyard fruit trees, summer pruning provides some important advantages to consider. Damage repair, size control, disease management, enhancing fruit quality and tree aesthetics are all good reasons to get up into your trees on a sunny day and snip away. Instructor Bio Gordon grew up in the city of Glasgow, often called the 'dear green place'. Inspired by his father at an early age to pursue horticulture, he was fortunate enough to be able to follow in his footsteps in and completed the 2 year Diploma program at Threave School of Gardening in southwest Scotland. It was at Threave that his love and deep appreciation for all things plant related was fully realised. Working under the head gardener and plantsman Magnus Ramsay, it was soon to become apparent that pruning trees and shrubs was going to be play a large part of this obsession. Further training was sought on the 3 year Diploma program at Pershore College of Horticulture in England. Since emigrating to Canada in 1994, Gordon had developed and established his own arboriculture business specialising in fruit tree pruning and tree care. He works part-time at a local retail garden centre; this somewhat helps to satisfy his plant obsession! Along with being an an instructor at the Pacific Horticulture College, he is also an avid beekeeper. How to Register for this Event This workshop is happening in person only. At the CEC we seek to respect, honour and continually grow our own understandings of Indigenous rights and history, and to fulfill our responsibilities as settlers, who live and work directly with the land and its complex, vital ecologies and our diverse, evolving communities. Newfoundland has a storied history of stunning songwriters, poets, and players. Over the course of the last decade The Once have writ and knit themselves into that story. This modern indie folk trio from Newfoundland, The Once, have collected a trio of Canadian Folk Music Awards, numerous ECMA awards, and was named Artist of the Year by the Newfoundland & Labrador Arts Council. They have earned not one, but two JUNO nominations for Roots Album of the Year and continue to take their music around the world. The trio features Geraldine Hollett on lead vocals and vocalist-instrumentalists Phil Churchill and Andrew Dale playing a variety of instruments. The Once are perform a mix of original and traditional songs and are noted for their beautiful three-part harmonies, which are sometimes performed acapella. The Once's name comes from an old Newfoundland expression which means "as soon as possible", "right away", "directly" or "in a short while". On their brand new album Time Enough , The Once offer some of the most vulnerable and honest material of their career. The up-tempo album opener, “I Can’t Live Without You,” reflects on women battling with self-image issues and offers wisened words to be the positive change in their own lives. The gritty guitar driven “Before The Fall” succumbs to the notion that we must accept our past and use those memories to grow. Riff rocker “Any Other Way” reflects the fact that true love accepts us at our worst but insists we do the work to be our best selves to keep it together. On this, their fourth studio album, the band stays true to the root strength of their harmony driven sound, while extending the borders into fresh yet familiar territory. They craft a sonically understated, but emotionally fulsome sound that accomplishes what they’ve always done so well: stun listeners with what Amelia Curran calls “perfect vocal harmonies, thick enough to stand on.” Information Source: Beacon Ridge Productions | eventbrite

Partner and Funders About CEA CEA grew from a committee established by the Government of BC and the Union of BC Municipalities in the 1990s, was incorporated as a non-profit in 2003, and registered as a charity the following year. CEA functions as a nonprofit consultant with members and a Board of Directors; more than half of CEA’s member-organizations are local governments and Indigenous communities. Today, CEA’s members and staff live in communities large and small and share in the benefits of being a community of practitioners. We bring our collective expertise, experiences, commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, and passion to reduce local greenhouse gas emissions while maximizing co-benefits, so that communities are healthy and resilient. This requires building local and regional capacity, leveraging funds, and fostering collaboration among all levels of government, Indigenous communities, energy providers, educational institutions, and other organizations to plan and implement local solutions.
