Photo of Deeznutz1 Their Voices“Imagine fleeing your home, your heart heavy with the weight of memories left behind, only to face a world that seems intent on crushing your spirit at every turn. The journey is a harrowing odyssey of fear and desperation, where each step could lead to capture, exploitation, or even death. Families are torn apart, children’s laughter silenced by the harsh realities of detention centers. Dreams of safety and new beginnings are constantly threatened by walls of bureaucracy and the cold stares of those who see you as a burden rather than a fellow human being. The ache of loneliness and the gnawing uncertainty of your future eat away at your resolve, even as you cling to the hope that drove you from your homeland. In this limbo between worlds, you are stripped of your identity, your dignity, and often your humanity, fighting each day to prove your worth in a society that seems all too eager to look away” –Abdel – Syria The RealityMigrants, refugees and asylum seekers face a daunting array of challenges on their journey to find safety and a better life. They often flee violence, persecution, or economic hardship, only to encounter new dangers and obstacles. Treacherous border crossings, exploitation by smugglers, and the constant fear of detention or deportation haunt their steps. 'CHAMPION' JACK OF THE OVENDEN DELTA! at Forest Cottage Community Centre | Forest Cottage Centre
Oct 11, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Forest
During the 1960's, Champion Jack and his American station wagon were a familiar, if unusual, sight around Ovenden and Halifax. Jack had met and married a local girl, Shirley, and their Ovenden home became the base from which he continued touring. He worked with greats such as John Lee Hooker, BB King and Eric Clapton, all of whom stayed over after gigs to keep the party going and if they were lucky, Jack would cook up some of his favourite New Orleans food. Jack was a restless spirit who never stopped moving, or searching, a victim of racism and the Jim Crow laws of the American south, a war hero and champion boxer, a migrant who sought and found not just sanctuary but love, in Calderdale. So please come and join us for a powerful and heartfelt mixed media performance as we celebrate of one of Halifax’s most mercurial and fascinating characters through his rich and soulful blues music, his own words, film, live action and oral testimony from his family, friends and those who remember and loved the one and only Champion Jack Dupree.
