Come On, Men, One More Effort … Anthropogenesis, Christianity, Sexuation Thierry de Duve in conversation with Jean-Michel Rabaté Thierry de Duve outlines the main features of a critical theory of male, all-too-male sexuation and cross-gender emancipation, drawing on Marcel Gauchet’s theses on Christianity as an exit from religion, Jacques Lacan’s algebra of desire, and Geneviève Morel’s analysis of the “law of the mother.” Wouldn’t it have required more than the translation of the three Christian maxims “faith, hope, love” into the revolutionary maxims “liberté, egalité, fraternité?” Is there more to the knot of incarnation, fatherhood, and the cult of Mary than just Christian mysticism? Can the uncertainty of fatherhood become an act of faith that acknowledges a fundamental uncertainty? Come On, Men, One More Effort… explores ways out of the dead end of political concepts adopted by the Enlightenment and their continued impact today, since the only possibility seems to be to embrace the religious and reject it at the same time. Bio Thierry deDuve is a historian, philosopher of art ,and Evelyn Kranes Kossak Professor at Hunter College, City University of New York. His English publications include Pictorial Nominalism (1991), Kant After Duchamp (1996), Clement Greenberg Between the Lines (1996, 2010), Look—100 Years of Contemporary Art (2001), Sewn In the Sweatshops of Marx: Beuys, Warhol, Klein, Duchamp (2012), and Aesthetics at Large, Volume One: Art, Ethics, Politics (2018). Two volumes of his Essais datés, published in French by Mamco in Geneva, have appeared in the last few years: Vol. I, Duchampiana, in 2014, and Vol. II, Adresses, in 2016. Duchamp’s Telegram, From Beaux-Arts to Art-in-General was published in 2023. He is presently working on Volume Two of Aesthetics at Large. Join us for light refreshments and a signing at Thea's home bookstore, Pantego Books. Click here to pre-order and ensure you can snag a copy of this steamy new book. About Four Letter Words: Seer Bradley is all sharp edges - whether it’s knives in the kitchen, swords as a renfaire noble, or her quick tongue behind the bar. She likes to stay busy; protected within the glass walls she’s built to keep herself, and her heart, safe and sound. One night with a handsome Scot tests the stability of her carefully constructed life, leaving her reeling. It’s fine. Harry MacLaren is starting over. He’s got priorities after moving across an ocean for the sake of his daughter - get settled in Texas, maybe find a D&D group, and try to forget the woman who knocked his world off balance this summer. Unfortunately, those priorities shift when he realizes that his one night stand with a witty bartender could jeopardize the community he so desperately needs as a single parent. Everything’s fine. When Harry and his family need temporary refuge, Seer offers her home as an option, despite her better judgement. She thinks they’ll be passing ships, relying on her walls to keep growing feelings in check. As they settle into a new routine, her edges start to dull, and Harry is determined to show what a life without walls could look like. It’ll all be fine. FOUR LETTER WORDS is a first person, dual perspective contemporary romance. Tropes: - Black Cat/Golden Retriever - Single Dad - Forced Proximity - Found Family - One Night Stand - Brother’s Best Friend Information Source: Thea Claire | eventbrite

Nancy Nolet is pursuing her Master of Fine Arts at Towson University. For many years, Nolet explored various forms of artistic expression, but it was during a mixed-media workshop in her mid-twenties that she discovered her true artistic medium. Her work examines the interplay between raw materials and man-made industrial objects by constructing whimsical sculptures from salvaged materials. Drawing inspiration from the Surrealist and Steampunk movements, she aims to ignite curiosity through compelling representations of the world's mysterious, bizarre, and formidable creatures. This installation work is a celebration of the insect world-- often marginalized and maligned. Nolet repurpose salvaged objects using various techniques to create unique, whimsical assemblages, sculptures, and installations. Reception begins at 3:30 with light refreshments! Artist talk will begin at 3:45. Information Source: Crow's Nest | eventbrite

Carrying On: Black Panther Artists Continue the Legacy | Rowan University Art Gallery

Fine Art
Curated by Colette Gaiter, this exhibition brings the legacy and current work of four artists from the Black Panther Party (BPP) together to illuminate “the role of art in cultivating a radical imagination and developing activist practices.” Viewing their early work (made during the height of late 1960s – early 1970s social movements, rebellions, and uprisings against oppression of all kinds) next to their later and current work shows how they view social progress and change. These cultural pioneers are all dedicated to the belief that art motivates and inspires people to work for their own liberation. As Toni Morrison said, “The function of freedom is to free someone else,” which means that once their minds were free from oppression’s limits, they were able to model and visualize free thinking for others. Each of these artists continues to make visual work. Information Source: Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum | eventbrite

Discover the intricacies of The Spokane in this immersive improv course. You'll explore how to craft a rich, interconnected narrative, starting from a single source scene and spinning off into multiple storylines, like spokes on a wheel. With a focus on deepening connections between characters and events, you'll learn to weave complex, engaging plots while maintaining spontaneity and flow. Through targeted exercises and collaborative scene work, this course will challenge you to think creatively, embrace unpredictability, and build a cohesive narrative world that surprises and delights both performers and audiences. Prerequisites: Improv 101 and 201, or equivalent classes at a comparable institution. Email info@rvacomedy.com with questions. Dates: This class runs Saturdays from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, starting February 8th and running for 4weeks. Instructor: Kenneth Stephens Kenneth Stephens has been performing live on stage off and on for almost a decade. Firstly, as an aspiring recording artist, and more recently as an improvisor at the Coalition Theater. Since January 2023, his consistent involvement with the nonprofit organization has facilitated what he refers to as a “creative renaissance.” He is a member of the narrative-driven improv house team Street Jelly, and you can see him perform every other Friday as part of the Coalition’s House Special. In addition to his recent delving into the world of sketch, Kenneth is also the current coach of VCU BIPOC improv team Black, Brown, & Honey. His indie work with Grizzly Bear is also something to behold as it often demonstrates the fun to be found in running a Spokane with two people. When he’s not trying to be funny he spends his time earning his reputation as an avid astrologer and fighting game enthusiast. COST: $125 (Early Bird $110) The Coalition Theater is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Once classes begin, all sales are final. We understand that unforeseen circumstances may arise that prevent you from attending or completing your registered class. While we do our best to accommodate such situations, refunds are awarded only as credit for a future class or shows and are subject to the discretion of The Coalition Theater management. Requests for refunds will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and any decisions regarding refunds will be made at the discretion of the theater. Information Source: Coalition Theater | eventbrite
