Please note that tickets are non-refundable and if you can't make the event and would like to reserve a signed & dedicated copy of The Persians, do get in touch. About The Persians: 'A wonderful multi-generational family drama with characters you really care about. I'm still thinking about them now. I enjoyed it enormously.' --- Marian Keyes ‘An ambitious, glorious feat. Five women's voices become one irresistible whole in this darkly funny, richly satisfying, wonderful debut.’ --- Sarah Winman ‘At once funny and profound, sprawling and personal, The Persians questions history’s grip on our lives―is it possible to free ourselves from the past, and do we even want to? A gloriously engrossing debut.’ --- Tash Aw A darkly funny, life-affirming debut novel following five women from three generations of a once illustrious Iranian family as they grapple with revolutions personal and political. Meet the women of the Valiat family. In Iran, they were somebodies. In America, they're nobodies. First there is Elizabeth, the regal matriarch with the famously large nose, who remained in Tehran despite the revolution. She lives alone in a shabby apartment except when she is visited by Niaz, her young, Islamic-law-breaking granddaughter, who takes her partying with a side of purpose, and somehow manages to survive. Across the ocean in America, Elizabeth’s daughters have built new lives for themselves. There’s Shirin, a charismatic and flamboyantly high-flying event planner in Houston, who considers herself the family's future; and Seema, a dreamy idealist turned bored housewife languishing in the privileged hills of Los Angeles. And then there's the other granddaughter, Bita, a disillusioned law student spending her days in New York trying to find deeper meaning by giving away her worldly belongings. When an annual vacation in Aspen goes wildly awry and Shirin ends up being bailed out of jail by Bita, the family's brittle upper class veneer is cracked wide open. Soon, Shirin must embark upon a grand quest to restore the family name to its former glory. But what does that mean in a country where the Valiats never even mattered? Can they bring their old inheritance into a new tomorrow together? Spanning from 1940s Iran into a splintered 2000s, these five women are pulled apart and brought together by revolutions personal and political. The Persians is a darkly funny, deeply moving and profoundly searching portrait of a unique family in crisis. Here is their past, their present and a possible new future for them all. About Sanam Mahloudji: Sanam Mahloudji is a writer from Los Angeles and Iran, living in London. Her debut novel, The Persians will be published in the UK & the US in 2025. Sanam won a Pushcart Prize for her story, 'Slut Days', first published in the Idaho Review. The story was reprinted in the 2023 Pushcart anthology and distributed by W.W. Norton. Sanam’s fiction also appears in the Kenyon Review, McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern, Passages North and elsewhere. She was nominated for a 2018 PEN/Robert J. Dau Short Story Prize for Emerging Writers. We look forward to seeing you there! About Thank You for Calling the Lesbian Line: 'Compelling, funny, intelligent . . . Thank You for Calling the Lesbian Line is a remarkable piece of work . . . A gift for those of us who have lived in our queer skins for many decades, and for young lesbians who are looking for a primer in lesbian history, an understanding of what it means to look for identity and place in our community.' ― Kerry Hudson,Observer 'It would be hard not to love a book with this title and happily, Elizabeth Lovatt has done it proud . . . This is a warm, thoughtful book.' ― London Standard 'Deliciously informative and rigorously researched, this book imagines the often invisible lives and denied passions of callers to the Lesbian Line, as well as tracing the author's own coming out story. I loved it.' ― Julia Bell, author of DIRTY WORK With warmth and humour, Elizabeth Lovatt reimagines the women who both called and volunteered for the Lesbian Line in the 1990s while also tracing her own journey from accidentally coming out to disastrous dates to finding her chosen family. With callers and agents alike dealing with first crushes and breakups, sex and marriage, loneliness and illness (or simply the need to know the name of a gay bar on a night out), this is a celebration of the ordinary lives of queer women. Thank You for Calling the Lesbian Line is a timely and vital exploration of how lesbian identity continues to remake and redefine itself in the 21st century and where it might lead us in the future. About Elizabeth Lovatt: Elizabeth Lovatt is a writer of fiction and creative non-fiction currently living in London. In 2019, she was writer-in-residence for Islington Pride and the ruckus! archive. The West Kirby Bookshop are thrilled to welcome the acclaimed Mexican writer, Guadalupe Nettel to the bookshop, to celebrate the UK publication of her short story collection, The Accidentals (translated by Rosalind Harvey). Join us on Thursday 5th June at 7pm, when Guadalupe will be in conversation about the book, answering questions from the audience, and signing copies of The Accidental. Tickets are £6 general admission or £15 including a copy of the book. Complimentary drinks will be provided on the night. Tickets are non-refundable but if you can't make the event and would like to reserve a signed/dedicated of the book, do get in touch. We look forward to seeing you there! About The Accidentals: ‘Guadalupe Nettel yet again walks into uncertain terrain with these mysterious stories. There are secrets everywhere, she says, especially in life’s most intimate and familiar aspects. The Accidentals never loses its sense of things being out of joint, and Nettel explores these fears with calm and with beauty.’--- Mariana Enríquez, author of Our Share of Night ‘I adored this collection, it spread its roots out within me. Nettel is an extraordinary writer.’ --- Daisy Johnson, author of The Hotel ‘Nettel is one of the leading lights in contemporary Latin American literature…. I envy how naturally she makes use of language; her resistance to ornamentation and artifice; and the almost stoic fortitude with which she dispenses her profound and penetrating knowledge of human nature.’ --- Valeria Luiselli, author of Lost Children Archive ‘I love the work of Guadalupe Nettel, one of Mexico’s greatest living writers. Her fiction is brilliant and original, always suffused with sensuality and strange science.’ --- Paul Theroux, author ofThe Mosquito Coast When an albatross strays too far from its home, or loses its bearings, it becomes an ‘accidental’, an unmoored wanderer. The protagonists of these eight stories each find the ordinary courses of their lives disrupted by an unexpected event and are pushed into unfamiliar terrain: a girl encounters her uncle in hospital, who was cast out of the family for reasons unknown; a menacing force hovers over a fracturing family on a rural holiday; a couple and their children inhabit a stifling world where it is better to be asleep than awake; a man’s desire for a solution to his marital dissatisfaction has unforeseen consequences. Deft and disquieting, oscillating between the real and the fantastical, The Accidentals is the brilliant new book from International Booker-shortlisted duo Guadalupe Nettel and Rosalind Harvey. About Guadalupe Nettel: Guadalupe Nettel is a Mexican author of award-winning novels and short story collections. Her work has been translated into more than twenty languages and adapted for theatre and film. Still Born, her most recent novel, was shortlisted for the 2023 International Booker Prize. In 2008 she received a PhD in Literature from the EHESS in Paris. She has edited cultural and literary magazines such as Número Cero and Revista de la Universidad de México. She lives in Paris as a writer in residence at the Columbia University Institute for Ideas and Imagination. Information Source: The West Kirby Bookshop | eventbrite

We are thrilled to welcome Suzanne Joinson to West Kirby to celebrate the publication of her memoir, THE MUSEUM OF LOST AND FRAGILE THINGS Join us on Tuesday 1 October, 7pm when we'll be welcoming bestselling author, Suzanne Joinson to West Kirby, to celebrate the publication of her incredible memoir, THE MUSEUM OF LOST AND FRAGILE THINGS. Suzanne will be reading from the book, before being in conversation with Jordan from the bookshop, answering questions from the audience and signing copies of THE MUSEUM OF LOST AND FRAGILE THINGS. Tickets are £6/ £15 (inc. a copy of the book) and complimentary drinks will be provided. This event is non-refundable, and if you can't make the talk, please email hello@thewestkirbybookshop.com to reserve a signed/dedicated copy of the book. About THE MUSEUM OF LOST AND FRAGILE THINGS: ‘Inspiring and heart breaking. The best evocation of complex mother, daughter relationships I have ever read.’ --- Lily Dunn ‘A gripping portrait of a life, a relationship, a mind as it stretches and stretches.’ --- Dr Noreen Masud ‘Joinson’s memoir is a kind of reverse excavation where she hunts down objects to then bury them through her generous prose. Her hunt for material proof of a past that constantly shifts and slips is riveting, sad, but in many ways triumphant.’ --- Jen Calleja 'There’s such a lot to say about this book; Joinson’s evocation of a northern working class childhood, a life lived inside a cult and an adult struggle to understand those identities in a way that is truthful to her own experience and makes careful room for the perspective of others was something I could really personally connect with.’ --- Jenn Ashworth ‘In this haunting, elegantly written memoir, a writer looks back on a childhood lived at the knife-edge of existentialism, caught between the adults in her life, who will sacrifice everything to their predatory cult leader in exchange for promises of transcendence and immortality, and the oppressive norms of Thatcher-era Britain. Joinson powerfully evokes the sublime terror, beauty, and magic of girlhood, and audits complicated family bonds and rifts with stunning tenderness and clarity.’ --- May-Lan Tan Suzanne Joinson grew up in a 1980s council estate in Crewe, where her parents were followers of The Divine Light Mission cult. This clash of class and counterculture destroyed her family, leaving a legacy of turmoil and poverty. Years later, she attempts to reclaim what she’s lost and piece together the impact of a childhood infused with esoteric yoga practices, psychedelic encounters, and meditation techniques. The Museum of Lost and Fragile Things explores the realm of mother-daughter relationships and inherited class-based trauma, in a moving, delicately-woven account of coming to terms with a complicated past. About SUZANNE JOINSON: Suzanne Joinson is the author of two novels, A Lady Cyclist’s Guide to Kashgar and The Photographer’s Wife. Her books are translated into fourteen languages, and she was a National Bestseller in the US. Suzanne won the New Writing Ventures Award, was longlisted for the IMPAC International Literary Fiction Award, and is a member of the Folio Academy. She has been published in The New York Times, the Guardian, and Conde Nast Traveller. She lives with her family in Sussex. Information Source: The West Kirby Bookshop | eventbrite
