Baltic Creative Climate Club | BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art

Jul 26, 2025 (UTC+1)
Gateshead
Cultural Experiences
Creative Climate Club Every 4th Saturday of the month Front Room | 14:00-16:00 Donation & free tickets available Creative Climate Club is a free, monthly meeting for people who care about nature and are interested in creatively responding to the world around us, our local environment, and wider climate issues. The monthly meetings will involve creative activities which can help us care for the environment, such as: Creative opportunities with artists such as painting, collage, sketch-booking and photography. Opportunities to learn with local community experts such as bee foraging walks, pond ecology and talks about the Rive Tyne and its health. The chance to make a connection with local nature, wildlife and planting of urban spaces, such as a ‘garden crawl’ to local community gardens. Over time, members of the club will collaborate to develop our next steps, identifying practical tasks like litter picks, gardening and tree planting that we’d like to collectively participate in, new places we’d like to visit and people we’d like to hear from, and creative activities we can respond with. Held in our Front Room for ages 13+. Bees-Eye-View Sat 26 Apr | 14:00-16:00 Join the Baltic Beekeepers for a walking tour focusing on the surprising range of nearby plants which provide the local bees, including our rooftop honeybees, with their nectar and pollen. We'll meet in Baltic Front Room and venture out from there, returning at the end for a well-deserved complimentary drink. Pond Dipping with Mike Jeffries Sat 24 May | 14:00-16:00 Did you know dragonflies are moving North in the UK and pond animals are hatching and growing faster? The life in and around our ponds can tell us a lot about our changing climate and its impact, and May is a perfect time to grab a net and go pond-dipping. This month we'll explore the connection between ponds and climate with pond ecologist and artist Mike Jeffries by taking part in the Big Pond Dip at Ouseburn Pond. We'll meet at the Hello desk, just inside Baltic's entrance, then set off on a 20-minute walk to visit Ouseburn pond, within Ouseburn Orchard. There, Mike will talk us through the pond dip, assessing the quality of the pond based on the animals we find. Mike will talk to us about his research into how ponds 'mop up' carbon, the wildlife he's recorded around the pond over the years, and ways to improve a pond for freshwater wildlife. After the pond dip, we'll head back to Baltic for a free drink in our Front Room . All equipment provided, but please wear appropriate shoes for walking on grass and marshy ground around the pond. If you'd prefer to meet us at the pond, we plan to arrive there for 14:30 - please book a place via Eventbrite and send Jenny an email at: jennya@balticmill.com so we know not to wait for you at Baltic. Collage and zine-making Sat 28 June | 14:00 - 16:00 Join ecologist and artist Mike Jeffries for a collage and zine-making workshop. We'll take our findings from May's Creative Climate Club session - the Big Pond Dip at Ouseburn pond (don't worry if you weren't there - we'll share what we found!) and reflect on how climate change is affecting the Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside, to create fun and experimental collages, bringing these together to make a collective zine. All over free refreshments in Front Room . All materials provided, but feel free to bring any images, magazines or found materials to collage with. The Cramlington Forager Sat 26 July | 14:00-16:00 Meet Gemma, The Cramlington Forager, for an informative session about the free food at our fingertips and how to safely and responsibly forage in nature. Join us in Front Room over a free cuppa to find out more. Nature's Cure in Time of Need Sat 23 August | 14:00-16:00 Have you ever found comfort in nature during a tough time? Is there a special outdoor spot that always brings you joy? Do you have a story about how nature has helped you? We want to hear it! Join the Natural History Society of Northumbria for a free workshop to hear about their Lottery Heritage Funded project, Nature's Cure in Time of Need . Join us for chats about the nature that inspires us and help NHSN collect nature stories. Each story you submit as part of the workshop will be accessioned into a new collection in NHSN's North East Nature Archive (NENA) housed in the Great North Museum: Hancock . We'll also be indulging in a bit of simple book-binding, crafting nature journals which you can take away with you to help you notice the nature around you. About Nature’s Cure Nature’s Cure in Time of Need: New Voices for North East Nature is a Heritage Lottery-funded project dedicated to capturing stories from underrepresented voices. It explores how nature has provided solace and strength during challenging times in the north east. By preserving these personal narratives in NHSN's North East Nature Archive , housed in the iconic Great North Museum: Hancock , the project ensures that future generations can connect with the ways nature has shaped and supported our local communities. Through workshops, events, and storytelling, Nature’s Cure in Time of Need invites everyone to share their story. Rachel Lancaster and Laura Lancaster present... Baltic Cinema: David Lynch: The Art Life Wed 3 September | 18:30 £6 Full price / £4 Students, under 18s, unwaged and 65+ Jon Nguyen USA 2016 88’ (cert. 15)English | Digital video A window straight into the mind of much-missed director David Lynch, selected by Rachel and Laura Lancaster. A rare glimpse into the mind of one of cinema’s most enigmatic visionaries, David Lynch: The Art Life offers an absorbing portrait of the artist, as well as an intimate encounter with the man himself. From his secluded home and painting studio in the Hollywood Hills, a candid Lynch conjures people and places from his past, from his boyhood to his experiences at art school to the beginnings of his filmmaking career — in stories that unfold like scenes from his movies. This remarkable documentary by Jon Nguyen, Rick Barnes, and Olivia Neergaard-Holm travels back to Lynch’s early years as a painter and director drawn to the phantasmagoric, while also illuminating his enduring commitment to what he calls "the art life": “You drink coffee, you smoke cigarettes, and you paint, and that’s it.” "This film underscores David Lynch’s utter uniqueness." — Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian Doors open 18:30; Film starts 18:45. Baltic Kitchen is open until 18:30 for drinks, which you are welcome to take up to the cinema. Please note we cannot offer refunds on this event. Baltic Cinema: L’Invenzione di Morel (Morel’s Invention) Thu 25 September | 18:30 £6 Full price / £4 Students, under 18s, unwaged and 65+ Emidio Greco Italy 1974 110’ (cert. PG)Italian with English subtitles | 35mm transferred to digital video A fever dream about images, memory and desire, Emidio Greco’s forgotten but masterful adaptation of Adolfo Bioy Casares’ novel The Invention of Morel screens in response to Rachel Lancaster and Laura Lancaster’s exhibition ‘Remember, Somewhere’. A fugitive is washed up on a seemingly deserted rocky island. Out of nowhere, a group of tourists arrive, clad in 1920s high-society clothing, and though he fears being discovered, the fugitive begins to fall in love with one of them, a woman called Faustine (Anna Karina). She doesn’t seem to notice him — and it gradually becomes clear that something mysterious and powerful is keeping them apart. What could be read as an abstract sci-fi or a story of unrequited love reveals itself as a profound treatise on the image, and a (prescient) appraisal of our wish to record and preserve memories.n Doors open 18:30; Film starts 18:45. Speaker Georgina Williams-Hodgson is the founder of nousana, a business born from her own period of deep personal transformation. Isolated during lockdown and facing some of life’s toughest challenges, she began to question everything—from the chemicals in her food to the wider narratives shaping our world. This awakening led her into the realms of energy, frequency, and holistic health, igniting a passion to help others reconnect with themselves and break free from limiting beliefs. One area of particular interest became the topic of death—how different cultures approach it, the science and spirituality behind near-death experiences, and what might lie beyond. This exploration inspired Quantanimo, a thought-provoking event series designed to expand perspectives and help people make the most of their life experience. TechNExt25 Festival Party | Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art

Gateshead
Cultural Experiences
TechNExt festival is a celebration of the North East's thriving technology sector. Through a mixture of curated and community designed fringe events, TechNExt will serve as a showcase of the diversity, achievements and breadth of the tech sector in the North East. The festival aims to help drive the message that the North East is a region that is passionate about supporting, developing and growing its tech sector for the benefit of everyone. Festival Party - Thursday 19 June (7.30pm - 12.00am) - BALTIC Riverside Cafe, Gateshead Complete your festival week the right way. TechNExt invites you to an informal festival party at the iconic BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Arts. It’s a moment to revel in the remarkable achievements of the North East tech sector while meeting and catching up with fellow tech enthusiasts and attendees from across the UK. Food is provided, and as part of our Good Festival Ambition, please note that all catering at this event will be vegetarian. All additional dietary requirements will also be catered for, please state your needs on the booking form. Good Festival Ambition The festival is planned as a Good Festival with ‘for good’ being a core value running through everything. This will ensure a focus on quality, inclusivity, diversity, accessibility, and sustainability. As part of this ambition, we are offering a buddy system where attendees can select the option to be met by a friendly face from the TechNExt team or wider community on arrival. Your buddy would help you feel comfortable at the event perhaps by chatting over a coffee on arrival, introducing you to new faces, or help you understand more about the content of the event and what's planned that day. You can apply for a 'buddy' through the ticket purchase process. We are also committed to minimising the impact of our events on the environment. We work closely with our clients, venues, suppliers and delegates to reduce the impact of our activity wherever possible. Last year, the festival's carbon from curated events was 7.49 tCO2e and we decided, as an ethical offset, to donate the equivalent carbon credit value to a North East environmental charity, Groundwork North East & Cumbria for their nature-based solutions programme. More measures will be intoduced this year, tracking the festival's carbon footprint once again, leading us to further reduce our impact and become carbon neutral in future years. You will be asked to complete some questions about your planned travel which will help us create the carbon footprint for the festival. Refunds Please note our ticket refund policy below: Up to 12 weeks before the event starts - full refund More than 8 weeks before the event starts, but less than 12 weeks - 50% refund Less than 8 weeks before the event starts - no refund Information Source: TechNExt Festival | eventbrite
