On March 14th, the Artesia Coffee House at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt will feature a night filled with stunning vocals and harmonies, showcasing a lineup of talented musicians, all making their first appearance on our stage. First, enjoy the soulful sound of Brielle Taylor, a 16-year-old singer known for her role as the lead vocalist in local prog-rock band “Belt.” Brielle will take the stage for a solo performance, offering a mix of original acoustic love songs alongside a few pop covers. Following her, the “Elphin Tones Trio” from the enigmatic Area E will charm the crowd with their unique blend of three-part harmonies, two ukuleles, one guitar, and a touch of bittersweet magic. The trio features Victoria Frodsham, Louis Domingue, and Susann Richter. After the break, our spoken word artist of the evening will be Maggi Guzzi, a longtime local resident of the Coast since the early 70s. Maggi has shared her passion for performance art by teaching children through improv, dance, and play. These days, she focuses on writing poetry and short stories, which she will share with us in her unique, expressive style. To close out the evening, we are thrilled to present “The Holly Hawks,” a new band hailing from the lush forests of Clack Creek. Led by the sweet, heartfelt vocals of Megan Mansbridge, their music floats through the air like spring pollen, supported by the warm, breezy harmonica of Joel Fafard and the rich, woody bass of Kaia Nielsen. This, the last Artesia Coffee House of the season, will be happening again in the Doris Crowston Gallery of the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt, on Friday, May 9th at 7:30pm with doors opening at 6:45pm. Tickets are $20, available from Eventbrite, the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre (Wed-Sun, noon-4pm) or at the door. Delectable treats and beverages will be on offer, with donations graciously accepted. The beautiful grand piano will be making an appearance being played in the opening set by young musicians, 15-year-old Taho Shinagawa playing classical selections, and 17-yr old Daniel Claudepierre with songs of his own arrangements plus some new compositions. Next up is a Saxophone Quartet formed in 2024 based on the theory if one is great then four must be fantastic! This melodic and sometimes excitable group is comprised of Graham Ord, Karen Graves, Ken Grunenberg, and Jack Davis. After a brief intermission, Michael Gurney, local promoter of the local art scene and public speaker, will be reading some of his original poetry. To close the night and a powerful way to end the 2025 Artesia season will be the soul-baring voice of Kiki Connelly and the Understory with Anna Lumiere on grand piano and James Meger on upright bass offering gorgeous soul and R&B tunes.
