PRINCIPLED PROGRAMING SCALA 3 Scala 3 introduces a smorgasbord of new metaprogramming facilities, building upon the rock-solid foundations of TASTy, inlining, and the theory of Quotes and Splices, and providing all the capabilities of Scala 2 macros—and much more! Principled Metaprogramming in Scala 3 brings a new power to design APIs that are not only elegant , but fast ...then turns that into a superpower with guarantees about your code's safety . This course will indulge in these new features. We begin with an exploration of Inline Methods , developing a confidence to understand how they behave. We learn techniques for reasoning about inlining, and a clarity on the distinction between runtime and compiletime facts, with a particular focus on static analysis, dependent typing and branch elimination. We build upon inlining with an exploration of Quotes and Splices , making it possible to construct and compose custom code through fluid syntax that seamlessly interleaves code evaluated in the current compilation phase with code for later phases. We will learn to write macros, pattern match against terms and types, and discover how they can transcend compile phases. Finally, we dive deeper into Reflection with TASTy Trees , the building blocks for all Scala 3 code. We break down expressions and types into their syntax trees and discover what information we can glean from them and their associated symbols. We will construct new terms and types with fresh precision, and transition between their quoted and reflected representations. Each section is loaded with real-world examples to illustrate features as they are introduced. As with any complex new topic, it can be hard to absorb every detail in such a short time. So with each example we focus on repetition of the fundamentals and the universals—so these become second nature—and we learn the methods of discovery for the features we reach for less often. By the end of the course, you will be able to use inline methods confidently, and develop macros that introspect and construct code at compiletime, so you can create rich, powerful and nuanced APIs, with less boilerplate. ----------- LambdaConf 2025 will span an entire week, from May 10th to May 16th. COMPLETE APL: REAL-WORLD APPS, REAL SMALL CODE It can be a challenge to see how to go from solving "Leet Code" and "Advent of Code" problems in APL to tackling full-blown applications written mostly in APL. This workshop focuses on an opinionated, curated approach to writing full programs that retain the simplicity and clarity of smaller APL programs as you tackle larger and more complex applications that must interface with the outside world and that cannot be contained in a simple one-line APL program. We will teach the principles of this opinionated APL architecture and work through the practical application of these principles using some fun and relevant application examples. The attendee is encouraged to bring their own program ideas for discussion and implementation. Our goal is to help you move from toy hobbyist to someone who can really put APL to use as an application development tool. -------- LambdaConf 2025 will span an entire week, from May 10th to May 16th. climbing Cultural Experiences
Experience climbing the Via Ferrata – an exhilarating way to enjoy the thrill of mountain rock! The Via Ferrata is a unique experience that falls somewhere between scrambling and technical rock climbing, something like a ropes course up a cliff. While it is physically demanding, the system of cables and ladders allows even non-experienced climbers to ascend the 600 foot tall cliff. All you need is to have good fitness and at least a passing ability to deal with heights. Participants, accompanied by KMAC guides, are secured to the pathway system of anchored steel cables as they ascend using natural rock features, ladders, and steel steps. While you ascend, you’ll enjoy stunning vistas of Rocky Mountain National Park and the surrounding valley typically accessible only to rock climbers! Who: This program is intended for women ages 16 and up. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Program level & description : Moderate – This program is most appropriate for those with some hiking experience. Expect to hike about a mile to the base of the Via Ferrata. The Peregrine Arete begins in a rocky gully on the side of the cliff. It traverses in and quickly gains elevation and exposure as the ground drops away. By design, the most physically demanding moves are at the very beginning to give an idea of what is to come. Soon we move into the super exposed “ Hinterstoisser Traverse ,” a wildly exposed section that gets hearts racing every time. After a fun steeper section we arrive at one of the best views in the world for a snack break. Once our heart rates drop back down we start the second half, the Peregrine Arete. This half isn’t as physically challenging, but it does offer amazing views in all directions as we follow the crest of the ridge, as high above the valley as it gets, all the way to the summit! No previous rock climbing experience is necessary to ascend the Via Ferrata. Unfortunately, due to limitations on the lanyard safety equipment that connects you to the Via Ferrata system, we cannot accept guests over 265 lbs. When : Sunday, June 15, 2025 from 9:00am to 2:00pm Where: Meet at the KMAC Office (1230 Big Thompson Ave, Estes Park, CO 80517). We will drive together in Conservancy vehicles to the trailhead. Whats Included: Guides Harness Helmet Via Ferrata Lanyard What to Bring: Small backpack lunch 2 liters of water Rain jacket Layers for changing weather Sunscreen, sunglasses and hat Refund Policy: Cancellations made more than 30 days prior to the start of the course are eligible for a full refund. Cancellations made fewer than 30 days in advance are not eligible for a refund. Our programs proceed rain or shine, and participants should be prepared for inclement weather. Project Description: Work alongside Rocky Mountain National Park greenhouse staff to transplant young nursery plants into larger containers for use in native plant restoration projects. Transplant various species of grasses, forbs, shrubs, and trees that will help restore disturbances in meadows, wetlands, forests, and the alpine tundra! Nursery transplants were propagated in Rocky’s greenhouse and sourced by seed collected within the park to preserve specific adaptations that allow plants to persist in Rocky’s climate. Get your hands dirty and be a part of preserving Rocky’s diverse landscape! What to Expect: Transplanting will occur at Rocky’s native plant nursery located at an elevation of around 8,000 ft. Work is sedentary and repetitive as transplanting is done while sitting. Light to moderate lifting of plant trays and pots will be required as well as moving wheelbarrows of soil over short distances (10-20 ft.) Shade structures are provided to work under, but be prepared for variable weather conditions (sun, wind, heat, cold, light rain). Minimum age: 18 years Dates (weather permitting): Wednesday, August 6th Time: 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM (not required to stay the entire time) Departure and return location: Beaver Meadows Visitor Center Work site: Greenhouse Nursery Nearest bathroom: Office building near Greenhouse Gear to bring: Layers (it can be hot or snow, even on the same day), rain gear, sun protection (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses), gloves if you prefer your own, day pack, lunch and snacks, and at least 2 liters of water per person. Note: Each date has a minimum requirement of 4 volunteers and a maximum of 12. If your desired date does not meet the minimum group requirement, we will try to reschedule you for another date.
