There was a time when ‘to harp’ meant to speak, when harpers travelled the length and breadth of the country telling stories and singing songs. As they travelled, the stories and the songs they carried with them were shaped by the places they went, by the roads they took and by the wind that blew them. Over the last 25 years Nick been developing a vibrant and exciting style of performance harpers of old would recognize. Drawing deeply from the wellspring of traditional sources, this performance of song and story re-interprets the material for a modern 21st century, with powerful and evocative language and an innovative style of harp playing. Nick Hennessey is an internationally acclaimed storyteller, playwright, folk singer, song writer and musician. He has told stories for more than 20 years, performing at venues such as the South Bank Centre and Royal Albert Hall. Working with top of the field musicians and storytellers, he has broadcast documentaries for BBC Radio 4 and his musical work has featured on BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction. Doors open at 7.00 p.m. get a drink from the bar and join us up the staircase ready for the show to begin at 7.30 p.m. Meals used to be available from the bar, we hope a new chef will be found before this event. A significant addition to Volland's permanently installed, outdoor art collection. In early 2024 the Kohler Foundation gifted eight conserved sculptures by self-taught Kansas artist M.T. Liggett to the Volland Foundation. Established in 1940 and located in Kohler, WI, the Kohler Foundation focuses on preserving Art Environments across the United States. Locally, the Kohler Foundation helped preserve S.P. Dinsmoor’s Garden of Eden and Miller’s Park in Lucas, KS. The Kohler Foundation also funded and oversaw the restoration of the M.T. Liggett Art Environment in Mullinville, KS, which is now part of the 5.4.7 Art Center in Greensburg, KS. The sculptures were originally part of the art collections of Gloria and Dick Anderson and Cindy and Larry Meeker, friends of the artist. The Volland Foundation extends its gratitude to the Andersons, Meekers and Kohler Foundation for this gift . This is a free event but reservations are required. Light refreshements will be served. M.T. Liggett was a non-traditional artist who found success in the arts in later life.
