His research explores how natural background mercury levels vary with parent rock types and soil profiles, shedding light on the challenges of distinguishing naturally occurring mercury from pollution in areas impacted by artisanal gold mining. About the speaker Prof. Dr. Salomon B. Kroonenberg (b. 1947) is an endowed professor of geology at Anton de Kom University of Suriname. With a PhD from the University of Amsterdam (1976) on the geology of southwestern Suriname, Prof. Kroonenberg has decades of international experience in geology, physical geography, and remote sensing. He has held professorial roles at Wageningen University and Delft University of Technology and is an honorary professor at Moscow State University. His research focuses on Suriname's geological history, alongside prior work on sea-level changes in the Caspian Sea. Prof. Kroonenberg is the author of over 170 scientific publications and eight books, including the award-winning The Human Dimension – The Earth in Ten Thousand Years.
