Join the 1 Day Winter Skills Course in Fort William/Glencoe and gain the confidence to hike in the mountains on snow and ice during winter. This course is designed to cover the basics of winter walking, including the use of an ice axe and crampons. Led by Lee, an experienced guide and instructor with the Winter Mountain Leader Award, this small group course can be adapted to meet the needs and wants of the participants.

Throughout the day, you will learn essential skills for walking and staying safe in the UK Mountains in Winter. Topics covered include movement on ice and snow, avalanche awareness, navigation in winter conditions, emergency procedures, risk assessment, efficient route choice, and advice on winter kit.

If you're looking to take your winter walking further, there are also 2 and 3 day courses available. These courses provide more practice, cover additional topics, and give you the confidence to venture out independently in winter.

To participate in the 1 Day Winter Skills Course, it is recommended that you already have experience hiking in hills or mountains during summer conditions. No prior experience with an ice axe or crampons is required, as you will be shown how to use them. You will need to bring your own helmet, ice axe, crampons, and suitable boots. Helmets can be hired from Scottish Mountain Hire and Alan Kimber Kit Hire.
