Firstly - this is a very nice hotel in a beautiful area. But our stay was compromized by agency booking.com and hotel not being able to cooperate good enough. Booking.com managed to book two rooms of a room cathegory that the hotel only have one of. The hotel then asked us to cancel the booking - and very nicely gave us ”the owners suite” (very nice - but hard beds and very overfurnized living room). Then both booking.com and the hotel managed to charge our credit card double. (Customer support in booking.com helped a lot, reception not so much...) Restaurant has very good food - but need to improve on service, consistancy and follow up on tables. Nice swimming pool area with spa section with some minor errors that should have been fixed.

Well, let's see. This would have been a very different review if we hadn't splurged on a room upgrade. The double room we originally booked was small, worn and facing a ditch. Arriving late after a two hour drive, my husband took one look at the room, then at me and said ”I'd rather go home.” So we called reception and were able to see the three available suites, and chose the one without stairs (because we had a baby with us). The rooms are already SO expensive, so it did pain us to spend even more (300 kr per person per night), but it made ALL the difference. Room 427 was close to perfect. A roomy suite with a kitchen, large living room, balcony, bedroom, and bathroom with a tub. And on top of that, a great view of the spa, restaurant and ocean. I have never advised anyone to do this before, but stay away from the double rooms and BOOK THE SUITE! I did not sleep well, unfortunately, because the bed was too soft. (Not normally a problem, but we're talking really soft.) Waking up early, we went down to the beautiful restaurant and had a fantastic breakfast. Then we had a lovely time at the spa with the baby, which is open from 7 am to 3 pm for children, and from 7 am to 10 pm for adults. We tried mini-golfing, for a ridiculous price of 280 kr, but again, decided to enjoy our break. We also went for a walk in the forest. We had dinner at the a la carte restaurant, which was fine. We didn't feel like splurging again on the buffet at 700 kr per person, and paid half this at the a la carte. The views from this hotel are absolutely stunning and the spring air was crisp and clean. In the end we had a very nice time. Pros: Amazing views; roomy suites; spa with warm indoor/outdoor pool, nice facilities and generous opening hours; two restaurants to choose from; good service everywhere we went on the resort Cons: Terribly expensive room rates, double rooms are lousy value for money, a bit far from Kragerø, not much to do in the area

Seljord Hotel - Unike Hoteller

The hotel is very old and has loads of history. It seems that conserving the history is more important than giving guests a good experience, and that is sad. The up-keep of the rooms is so-so. For a full price hotel there is expectations to what the guests expect. It is possible to conserv the history and accomodate guests. Bed was worn out and the matress was very thin. The chairs were probably from the 1800's and due for a restore job. The bathroom was ”modernized” but could have been so much better by spending a bit more. The room was very hot. Window open and weather turning over the night made it OK though, but I can imagine it being hot and humid in a good summer night. We passed on the dinner and found a different place to eat. Nothing on the menu was tempting for any of us. The breakfast had very poor selection for gluten free diet. Come on, there is so much to choose from these days. Even frozen bakery you heat up on request. For regular diet the breakfast had the basics. Of the good stuff the hotel is very preserved and there is tons of history. If this is your fancy, this is the hotel for you. If you prefer plaster walls and clean design you might steer clear.

The room was warm, the breakfast was good, the service was super good, the check-in was fast, the various requests were responded quickly, and dinner and afternoon tea were provided, so you don't have to go out for food on a cold winter day.
