Ranginuis Retreat
4.2/534 Reviews
We stayed for 4 nights in a two bedroom bungalow and it was a miserable and uncomfortable experience, far below our expectations. The accommodation was basic, dirty, un-loved and scruffy. Examples of this were the recently replaced vanity in the bathroom that had not been fitted properly and the walls left unpainted and unfinished where the old vanity had been, broken and scruffy flooring, a kit set wardrobe that could not be opened or closed properly and as soon as i tried to hang something the whole rail fell down, old, worn curtains on flimsy rails, the kitchen was just a sink bench with some basic utensils sitting on a shelf under the sink, the fridge was dirty, the shower was hilariously bad; stained and tired with a shower head that didn't fit the holder so it regularly fell off mid shower, a pile of sand/dirt behind the bedroom door, along with spier webs, the bedding and linen was tired, mismatched and scratchy...the list goes on. The whole site is tired and unkempt. The advertising photos are very misleading. There are no outside lights and we arrived at night, to basically just an office building right by the road with no welcoming area, signage or path. After raising the owner, the surly Steve - read other 1 star reviews which expand on his poor manners - told us that we should just walk around the building, and then he shut the door on us. We struggled with our wheeled bags through the dark as there was no path, just dirt, and stumbled through the place until we found our room, with no help from him. The gardens are sparse, with broken light fittings and pathetic attempts at decoration dotted among them. Two doors from us there was a large rubbish pile, right next to another unit. The pool was small and green, and squashed between several units. It really was terrible. The lagoon is beautiful and the only redeeming feature. There are many other basic, clean and affordable self catering options on Aitutaki. Don't choose this place.
Tamanu Beach Resort

We absolutely loved Tamanu Beach and our whole family of 6 enjoyed staying there. This is truly a wonderful resort, that is not only loved by tourists but also by locals. The family that runs/owns the resort and their incredible staff truly go out of their way to make you feel welcome, and their love and hard work truly resonates through the entire experience. A few themes run through Tamanu beach in our experience: family, “casual luxury,” and a deep care for the guest experience. So first off, “casual luxury” is truly fitting for Tamanu Beach, and the concept of family echoes through the entire place. This is not a resort where you will get a sterilised, watered down, experience of culture and a cookie-cutter hotel where you could be anywhere in the world. Tamanu beach felt deeply rooted in the local culture with locals working and chatting with tourists, and we absolutely loved that aspect. Everyone we encountered, Aunty Nane who picked us up at the airport with warm smiles, conversation and eis, to Kathleen who welcomed us so professionally and warmly, Mi’i (who was so lovely and helpful to us on our trip) and Zianca (amongst others) who served us meals were all perfect examples of warm, friendly and helpful staff of Tamanu. The lovely Nat (who we so enjoyed chatting with) was so helpful and such a perfect example of warmth and help. The owners /directors/ managers we were blessed to meet Nick and Diane, Helen and Johno, all made us feel at home, and truly welcomed. (And you might just get lucky and hear Nick’s gorgeous singing voice, a true MC who knows how to entertain all whilst making the guests feel special)! When we first arrived we noticed the lock on our door didn't work and Paul was there within the hour to fix it, and had a lovely chat with him as well. **A little sidenote: After meeting the radiant Helen (the matriarch of the Henry family who own the resort and one of the directors of the resort) I read her book (a copy was in our room) — highly recommend the book too. An incredible story that is beautifully written!** We stayed with our four children — the kids in the family area of the resort, and the adults (me and my husband) stayed in the adult side of the resort. It was a perfect set up for us as the kids had a lovely large room, and absolutely stunning pool, and the adults had a quiet “adults-only” sanctuary and pool to escape to. The rooms were large, cleaned daily so impeccably by the friendly housekeeping staff, and the AC, screens and quality fridge/freezer were a much-appreciated bonus to the rooms. A review of Tamanu Beach without mentioning the location would be utterly incomplete. Tamanu is right on the lagoon, which is spectacular. Beautiful clear, warm water, with great snorkeling, water sports, and magnificent sunsets. Some exquisite corals (purple, branch, brain) with lots of lovely little fish of various types were seen by us all, just off the beach at Tamanu. We went to the cultural show /buffet on Sa

The service is very good. I upgraded to a sea view room. The view is very beautiful, but there is no beautiful lobby or restaurant. However, it is convenient to eat. There is a good restaurant one minute walk from the beach. We have a two o'clock flight and the hotel Let me stay until one o'clock. This is an advantage that other hotels do not have. I am very satisfied.

We stayed 2 nights here and it was a great and affordable base camp for us. Room was cool in the evenings and we never saw a mosquito at all. Kitchen is basic but has what you need. Avetea Cafe is a 5 min walk and people came from all over the island to have food there and we were able to make it with a short walk - which we did several times! Our hosts Des and Tutai could not have been more hospitable and were only a phone call away if we needed something.
