　浙江省临海古城墙有着悠久的历史。自晋代开创以来，已有1600余年，迭经唐、宋、元、明、清诸朝不断修筑增扩，其主体部分一直保存到今天。古城墙沿江修筑而上，依山就势，逶迤曲折，雄险壮观。尤其是北固山一段，建于危崖之巅，飞舞盘旋，敌台林立，雉堞连云，城楼高峙，与北京八达岭相较，可称双绝 ，称之为&ldquo;江南八达岭&rdquo;，并不过誉。更有其独特之处是，临海古城墙两侧，古木参天，常年苍翠，城墙掩映在青绿丛中，更增添了一分灵秀。　　临海古城墙，除了御敌的功能之外，还有一个十分重要的作用，就是防洪的功能。城墙有三分之一的长度是沿着灵江修筑，台州府城正位于灵江入海近处，江水与潮水相碰，水位升高，时常漫上城来。城墙有如大堤，千余年来抗击着洪水的冲击。为此，临海城墙在修筑设计上，采取了特有的措施，把瓮城修作弧形，特别是把&ldquo;马面&rdquo;迎水的一方修作半圆弧形(其余一方仍为方形)，在全国古城墙中，十分罕见，所知尚属孤例。由于城墙的抗洪作用，在元朝灭掉南宋时，元帝曾下令拆毁江南所有古城墙，以利其铁骑长驱直入，而临海城墙却因其无法替代的防洪功能，得到了特旨免拆。
