One of the ancient streets of Wuxi, China is Nanchang Street. It is accompanied by a long and leisurely ancient canal, and affection for it lies deep in the hearts of generations of Wuxi people. Today's Nanchang Street is changing, outfitting itself with an elegant, unique and colorful charm to appeal to a variety of different people. It merges the slow life of the old Wuxi people with the young and fashionable, becoming a beautiful combination of both. Nanshan Temple is located on Guyun River in Wuxi. Despite not being very large, it is a highly active temple. After praying to Buddha in the temple, you can take a stroll down the nearby street and have something to eat. The night scenery is also worth a look. At nightfall, Nanchan temple and the old houses by Guyun River light up their lanterns. The strings of red lanterns are reflected in the river, and the beautiful night view attracts the attention of quite a few cameras.Wuxi · 1.3km from downtown

The ancient town of Meili, known as "the ancient capital of Gouwu and the new city of Meili", is located in the southeast of Wuxi City. There is also the Toushan Gate, which has six stone pillars, each of which is 6 meters high. The two middle ones are decorated with cloud dragon patterns, and the pillars on both sides are decorated with crane clouds, which are rare in China at present.Wuxi · 13.4km from downtown

Dangkou Ancient Town is a classic "Jiangnan" water town. Jiangnan or "south of the river" refers to the geographic area to the south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The white walls and black tiles of the buildings that line the waterways and footpaths stand proudly like strong trees in a forest. Strings of red lanterns hang beneath the eaves of the buildings. Because the scenic area is relatively new, it has not yet been fully refurbished and still has a mix of old and modern architecture. However, photos taken here still look beautiful. Many visitors from nearby Shanghai and Suzhou come to check it out.Wuxi · 24.6km from downtown

Originally established in 1111 A.D. by the Northern Song Dynasty, Donglin College is a National Heritage Conservation Site that served as an influential learning center during the Zheng He Period. It was the academy where the famous philosopher and scholar Yang Shi taught students and officials on matters of politics, intellectual thought and scholarship. Later, other prominent members of the Ming Dynasty gathered at Donglin College to further discuss political events, reforming society, moral evaluations and natural consequences with the educated elite. The distinguished school also prepared students for careers in public affairs. It has had many instances of needing major repairs, with several efforts toward restoration throughout the era of the Donglin movement and afterwards. Centuries later, with the financial backing of subsequent dynasties and local officials, Donglin College has been reconstructed and redecorated to showcase nice gardens and classrooms for any visitors looking for a quiet reading room in a peaceful setting.Wuxi · 859m from downtown

Shushan Gunan Street is located in Dingshu Town, Yixing City, with Li River in the south and Shushan Mountain in the north. The street is a thousand meters long and only three or four meters wide. The buildings of the street houses are all two-story brick and wood structures. The naturally balanced streetscape continues the story of the old street as wet as the drizzle in the south of the Yangtze River day after day. The woman who picks vegetables sitting by the door, the old man who plays chess bare-chested with a palm fan in his hand, the strong man holding a purple clay pot, the dog walking on the street corner wagging his tail, the mahjong player in the dark light…;…; these are The scene makes the typical ancient street in the south of the Yangtze River in Ming and Qing Dynasties, along the Li River running through the ancient town of Taodu, flowing with the poetic charm of Taodu. Shushan Old Street Hutong, the first batch of ancient building protection units in Jiangsu Province and a cultural relic protection unit in Yixing City, is said to be a bustling and lively "Zisha Street" in the old days. Here, more than half of the households are engaged in the production and operation of purple sand. They use their own houses, the back house is a production workshop, and the front house facing the street is set up with shelves to run a shop. There are more than 30 purple sand pottery shops in the whole old street, which shows the prosperity of the purple sand industry at that time. In addition to pottery shops, there are also teahouses, cloth shops, hardware and small department stores in the old street, all of which are family-centered. The Li River on the edge of the old street is full of wooden boats, fishermen, farmers who transport vegetables, and more transport boats for ceramic products. Through this river, ceramics from South Street are transported to in all directions.Yixing · 9km from downtown

Nanchang Street is more beautiful at night than during the day. The lanterns are lit, and the old houses along the canal are reflected in the water. The street is lined with restaurants and small shops, and some alleys are quieter. You can watch the boats go back and forth on the bridge and hear the sounds of Suzhou storytelling drifting from the teahouses. There are many street food stalls; try the magnolia cakes and plum blossom cakes. The street is lively but not too noisy, perfect for an evening stroll after dinner.

This must be the culture and commerce that gradually formed along the banks of the canal. The total length is several kilometers, but I only walked less than a kilometer. Various small shops line the canal, and you can also see elderly people who run small businesses on their own property. It's best to go at night when the atmosphere is nice.

The night view was beautiful, but it's become quite commercialized. I went in November, and the weather was starting to get cold, so there weren't many people around at night. My colleague and I chartered a boat for a night cruise around Meili Ancient Town.

We're all in our 70s, and we bought a package ticket at Pegasus Water Park. We saw stallions, rode in a horse-drawn carriage, took a boat trip to see the night view, had lunch and dinner (which were quite delicious), and stayed at a hotel with excellent service! Overall, we had a great time. Thumbs up!

The Beicang River, shrouded in morning mist, was coated in a layer of silver rust. Rowboats paddled past, startling the sound of gongs from the waterside opera stage. An elderly tea drinker in a blue cloth shirt leaned against a beautiful woman's chair, while excerpts from "Pearl Tower" on the radio harmonized beautifully with the chopping of knives at the fried fish shop across the river. The most vibrant scene was around the corner from the "Hua Family Charity Hall": preserved pickles drying on a plaque soaked up the sun, while a young woman at the cultural and creative shop next door scanned a family's account book into a QR code. As the setting sun stained the ivy between the cracks of the blue bricks with golden threads, I suddenly understood what "Dangkou" meant: the entire town, like a swing swung by time, oscillated back and forth between the Ming and Qing dynasties and the present.

Located in one of the exhibition halls of the Wuxi Museum, this is a paid attraction. It mainly features Dunhuang cultural murals, combined with artistic lighting displays. The exhibition hall isn't very large, but it's quite photogenic. You can check it out if you're interested.

On a bright and sunny spring morning, I took the subway to Donglin Square Station in Wuxi. Exiting from Exit 1, I crossed the street and walked a hundred meters to reach the main gate of Donglin Academy. After waiting for about ten minutes, I entered the academy at 9:00 AM sharp. The academy was originally built in the Northern Song Dynasty and rebuilt during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty with funds raised by Gu Xiancheng and others. This was the academy's golden age. Strolling through the stone archway, the Pan Pond, Yiyong Hall, and Lizhe Hall, among other Ming and Qing Dynasty buildings, I was struck by their simple and dignified beauty. The pavilions, towers, and long corridors in the western garden were quiet and elegant. I could almost hear the students reciting their lessons. The famous couplet in Yiyong Hall, "The sound of wind, the sound of rain, the sound of reading—all sounds enter the ear; family affairs, national affairs, world affairs—all are of concern," further conveyed the broad-mindedness of the students of yesteryear. Coming here, my restless heart was soothed; it was truly a good place for tranquility. Donglin Academy, after a comprehensive renovation in 2002, reopened to the public and is now a national key cultural relics protection unit and a national 4A-level scenic spot. Those who are interested can visit the scenic area, which is very convenient to get to, as there are subway lines directly connecting Wuxi Station and East Station.

I came during the National Day holiday, so it was quite crowded. There was a chrysanthemum exhibition with various shapes, vibrant colors, and beautiful decorations. We took a ride on the miniature train; the weather was sunny and pleasant, and it cost 10 yuan per person, which was reasonable. We spent over three hours walking around and having a great time.
