No. 7 of Cool Water Escapes in South Africa

Knysna River

Knysna Riveris an estuary lagoon connected to the Indian Ocean, located next to the town of Knysna along the Garden Route in South Africa. At high tide, the water is vast and calm, resembling a giant mirror. As the tides change, sandbars are exposed in some areas, subtly altering the shoreline. Two headlands facing each other extend toward the center of the lagoon, causing the wide water surface to narrow abruptly here, forming a natural channel that connects the inner lagoon to the open sea. The headlands not only shape the unique spatial layout of the lagoon area but also act as a natural barrier, blocking some of the Indian Ocean's waves and keeping the waters inside relatively calm. Therefore, compared to the open sea, the interior of the lagoon is more suitable for water activities, with boat tours, kayaking, and sunset cruises all concentrated in this area. During the voyage, you can observe the natural view composed of the shoreline, headlands, and the open lagoon from the water.Knysna · 42.5km from Wilderness

Post Office Tree

Post Office Tree is an approximately 500-year-old milkwood tree with twisted branches and a dense canopy. A freshwater spring once located near the tree was used by sailors, and Bartolomeu Dias's fleet resupplied there in 1488. In 1500, the fleet of Portuguese captain Pêro de Ataíde became separated from other ships on their return voyage. While stopping in Mossel Bay, he placed a letter describing the voyage inside a sailor's boot and tied it near the tree. The following year, a passing Portuguese fleet discovered the letter. Afterward, sailors began leaving letters under the tree to be carried to their destination by passing ships, linking the tree to early maritime communication. Today, a large boot-shaped mailbox stands next to the tree to commemorate this history. Visitors can drop postcards and letters into the mailbox, and outgoing mail is stamped with a commemorative postmark featuring the tree. The tree, the mailbox, and the related historical exhibits together form a site with a unique maritime cultural view.Mossel Bay · 45km from Wilderness

Bloukrans Bridge is a concrete arch bridge spanning the Bloukrans River valley, with the river below forming the boundary between the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape. Built in the early 1980s, the bridge deck is approx. 216m above the valley floor, with a main span of approx. 272m. The grayish-white bridge spans the ocher-red cliffs, with lush forests at the bottom of the valley. Since 1997, the bridge has hosted bungee jumping activities. Before jumping, you need to walk along the suspended walkway under the bridge to the platform in the center of the gorge. After leaping, you will experience a free fall before swinging in the gorge. In addition to bungee jumping, you can also experience the suspended walkway to watch the bungee jumping process up close from under the bridge, or try the zip-line across the gorge. There are viewing spots on the side of the bridge where you can see the complete arch bridge structure as well as the views of the valley, forest, and distant mountains below. Even if you do not participate in activities like bungee jumping, you can still enjoy the view of the bridge and the surrounding valley from the walkway and viewing spots.Greater Plettenberg Bay · 98.5km from Wilderness

Agulhas is a quiet town, with two-storey houses of various shapes scattered among the trees, and only one main street leading to the lighthouse. Because of Cape Agulhas, there are tourists visiting the town from time to time, as well as family hotels and souvenir shops. The lighthouse is built on a high ground in the small town of Agulhas. The stairs to the lighthouse are almost perpendicular to the ground, and the expansive scenery can be seen after climbing.South Africa · L'Agulhas

Knysna Coral Lake is the estuary of the Ness River in Cape Town. It is a large lagoon formed by changes in the siltation terrain. The entire lake is about five kilometers in size and the water is clear. Because the lakeside is full of reed swamps and the natural environment is good, it has become a paradise for migratory birds to reproduce. In the green mountains and clear waters, the Coral Lake is like a dazzling pearl that is intoxicating.

Traveling with a group in South Africa, from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, we came to the Dias Museum on the way and checked in the world's earliest post office - the Mossel Bay Postal Tree. This is the place where the Portuguese explorer Dias first landed in South Africa in 1488. It was built to commemorate Dias's rounding of the Cape of Good Hope to reach Poso Bay and landing in Mossel Bay. Learn about the origin and hardship of the first Europeans to explore the route to the East.
