Grossmunsterstands on the banks of the Limmat, facing the Fraumünster on the opposite bank. The church is primarily in a typical Romanesque style, and its twin towers are now considered a symbol of Zurich; the composer Wagner once jokingly called them a pair of "pepper pots". Outside the south tower of the church stands a seated statue of Charlemagne holding a sword; it is a replica, with the original housed in the crypt. The crypt and the chancel area where the choir stalls are located are the oldest surviving parts of the church, dating back to the late 11th to early 12th century, with traces of the original frescoes still visible on the walls. In the early 16th century, the reformer Zwingli served as a priest here and preached his reformist ideas, making the church the birthplace of the Reformation in German-speaking Switzerland.
