Anjihai Grand Canyon has been carved over the years by the Anjihai River, which originates in the Tianshan Mountains. With nearly vertical cliffs and a valley depth of up to hundreds of meters, standing on the edge and looking down reveals several canyons converging beneath your feet, as if you were suspended high in the sky looking down at the earth. The area is defined by its colors: ochre, dark cyan, grayish-purple, and dark green rock layers interweave on the cliff walls, with red mountains, dark cliffs, green peaks, green islands, and clear water complementing each other like a colorful ribbon spread out at the foot of the northern slope of the Tianshan Mountains. On both sides, multi-level river terraces are arranged from top to bottom, resembling terraced fields, and the braided river at the bottom of the valley splits into several winding channels, which, when viewed from above, look like an abstract painting of the earth.Shawan · 48.3km from downtown

Tianshan Tianchi, also known as Tianchi National Geological Park and called "Yaochi" in ancient times, is located in Fukang, Changji Prefecture, on the northern side of Bogda Peak. It is approx. 110 km from Ürümqi and is a famous tourist destination in Xinjiang. In ancient Chinese mythology, Tianchi was also the bathing place of the Queen Mother of the West. Tianchi Lake sits at an altitude of 1910 m, with a maximum depth of 105 m. The lake reflects the Bogda Peak, surrounded by spruce trees, creating a fairy-tale-like scenery. The attraction encompasses natural views such as alpine lakes, wetland meadows, and forested canyons. In 2013, it was designated as a national geological park. When visiting Tianchi, don't just explore the lakeshore—you'll miss many surprising sub-attractions. Recommended hiking routes, lakeside pier - Haixi beach, lakeside pier - East small heavenly pool (Flying dragon pool) The Tianchi attraction features three water bodies: the main lake plus two others on its eastern and western sides. The eastern one is "East Xiaotianchi," also called Heilong Pool, located 500 m east of Tianchi. Below the pool lies a sheer cliff where a waterfall plunges down like a rainbow, giving the site its name "Hanging spring and jade rainbow." On the west side lies "West Xiaotianchi," also known as Jade Maiden Pool, located approx. 2 km northwest of Tianchi Lake. The pool, shaped like a full moon and encircled by towering pines, earned its poetic name "Dragon Pool under the jade moon" from the serene moonlit reflections on its surface. A waterfall cascades beside the pool, plunging dozens of meters like a silver river descending from heaven, dubbed the "Jade belt with silver curtain." Above the pool stands the Sound of Waves Pavilion, offering a unique vantage point to admire the waterfall. All attractions within the scenic area are connected by boardwalks, accessible on foot. On the eastern shore of Tianchi Lake stands the Temple of the Queen Mother of the West, originally built during the Yuan Dynasty. The current structure was reconstructed in 1999 on the original temple site, dedicated to the worship of the Queen Mother of the West, hence also known as the "Queen Mother Temple". It can be reached by hiking along the lakeside boardwalk (approx. 2 hrs) or by taking a cruise. The temple offers excellent views of Tianchi Lake. Maya Mountain requires taking a shuttle bus + cable car. The towering cliffs and numerous stone peaks present a breathtaking sight; from afar, they resemble a row of horse teeth, while looking up, they appear as if jagged rocks are competing in grandeur and stacked cliffs are vying in beauty, creating a mesmerizing view. This view of Maya Mountain is formed by rock weathering. The summit of Maya Mountain is relatively flat, featuring lush grasslands covered with butter grass in summer and dotted with colorful flowers. Standing here, you can take in the panoramic view of Heaven Lake to the north, while the Bogda Peak to the east and the snow-capped mountains to the south seem within reach. To the west, the farmlands on the outskirts of Urumqi are also clearly visible.China · Fukang

Nalati Scenic Area

Nalati Scenic Area is located in the heart of the Tianshan Mountains and the eastern end of the Ili River Valley, a subalpine meadow grassland formed on ancient alluvial deposits. Legend has it that when the westward-expanding Mongol army crossed mountains to reach this place, they suddenly saw a sunlit plain carpeted with flowers. The soldiers exclaimed "Nalati," which means "the place with sunlight" in Mongolian, giving the area its enduring name. The attraction integrates snow-capped mountains, forests, valleys, meadows, and rivers, primarily divided into several sections: the River Valley Grassland, Sky Grassland, Panlong Valley Trail, and Wolta Jiaota. Along the River Valley Grassland by the Gongnaisi River, visitors can find Tawusani (meaning "beautiful mountain valley" in Kazakh), ancient tombs from the Wusun people of the Han dynasties, and the Grassland Tribe recreating Wusun tribal life. Following the uphill ride on the mountain road leads to the Sky Grassland, a high-altitude meadow suspended among peaks. The Tianjie Terrace at the boundary between the valley and grassland offers expansive views, while Snow Lotus Valley at the trail's end is often shrouded in mist, with snow lotuses blooming in midsummer. The Panlong Valley Trail is a forest loop without backtracking, flanked by towering Tianshan spruces. The Wolta Jiaota section is ideal for hiking, with the Tianxian Terrace providing stunning views of sunrise above sea of clouds. From June to September each year, the grassland enters its golden season, with lush green pastures and blooming wildflowers everywhere. Kazakh herders drive herds of cattle, sheep, and horses into summer pastures, where scattered yurts and curling smoke create a picturesque scene. Visiting the attraction during this time allows you to ride horses, try archery, and dress in traditional ethnic costumes. You might also encounter traditional equestrian activities like horse racing, kokpar (goat grabbing), and kyz kuu (girl chasing), experiencing the authentic Kazakh nomadic culture between snow-capped mountains and meadows.China · Xinyuan

World Mystery Town

World Mystery Town is located in Urho District, Karamay City, on the northwestern edge of the Junggar Basin, adjacent to National Highway 217, which connects Karamay to Burqin. Most travelers on the Northern Xinjiang loop route make a stop here. The area features typical yardang landforms, where billions of years of wind erosion and water immersion have carved the Gobi into towering, irregularly shaped mounds resembling a deserted ancient city from afar. The attraction lies in a wind-prone area, with strong winds throughout the year. Locals also call it "Urho Wind City," with a saying that goes, "One annual wind blows from spring to winter." When the wind howls through the labyrinth of mounds, it produces eerie wails, especially at night, earning it the name "Devil's Town." In 2005, when China National Geographic selected the most beautiful landscapes in China, the yardang landforms here were listed alongside those in Dunhuang and Lop Nur, becoming one of the representative views of yardang formations in the country. Among the earthen mounds in the Gobi, some resemble castle towers, while others look like people or animals. The attraction has named the most distinctive ones, such as "Sphinx," "Tiananmen," "Great Front Gate," "Guilin landscape," and "beacon tower." The "Devil's Eye" at the entrance is a iconic photo spot. When the small train rounds a bend, you can also see a massive rock that appears as a human face from the front but changes to another face when viewed from behind, known as the "Devil Couple." The attraction covers a vast area, with sightseeing trains as the main mode of transportation. Stops along the route include the Sphinx, filming locations for Seven swords and Crouching tiger, hidden dragon, Dinosaur Valley, and other sites, with onboard guide available. Movies and TV shows like Crouching tiger, hidden dragon, Seven swords, Visitors on the icy mountain, and Hero were filmed here, and sculptures recreating movie scenes remain at each stop for fans to spot familiar frames. A boardwalk near the Seven swords station leads to a viewpoint overlooking the entire yardang formation, while camel rides for photos are available near the Sphinx area. Each stop has limited time, but there's no need to rush if you want more photos—just wait for the next train. A full loop takes about two to three hours. At sunset, the slanting rays turn the mounds warm gold with distinct light layers, making it prime photography time. However, the desert has strong winds and intense sunlight, so remember to bring windproof gear, sunscreen, and drinking water.China · Karamay

Dushanzi Grand Canyon is located in Dushanzi District, Karamay City, Xinjiang, about 28 km south of the urban area, with accessible roads for vehicles. The canyon floor is 100–400m wide, while the canyon shoulders span 800–1,000m. With a height of up to 200m from base to shoulder and an elevation of 1,070m, this attraction features spectacular canyon terrain. After breaking through the Tianshan Mountains, the river carved out a spectacular canyon in the sloping plains southwest of Dushanzi. The terraces on both sides of the canyon are clearly visible, with at least nine distinct levels. The terrace surfaces feature desert grasslands dotted with wormwood and feather grass. Within Dushanzi, the Kuitun River flows through the Dushanzi Grand Canyon, which runs nearly north-south. The canyon walls are steep cliffs, while the river at the bottom alternately converges and diverges. The canyon shoulders are covered in desert grasslands. Standing at the canyon's edge, visitors are treated to a classic grand canyon panorama. The meltwater from Tianshan Mountain and rainwater carve out these unique canyon views by forming alluvial gullies through the local soil. The canyon begins at the mountain's base, creating distinct soil layers across the grassland, primarily in shades of gray and black. Though fed by abundant snowmelt, the water turns turbid as it carries sediment through these mineral-rich soils.Karamay · 71.4km from Shawan

The Corps Military Reclamation Museum is located in Shihezi City. It is a special museum reflecting the history and development of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps Military Reclamation. The museum is located in the "Military Reclamation First Floor", a cultural relic building in Xinjiang. Through numerous cultural relics and pictures, it shows the ancient history of Shihezi, the history of military reclamation and subsequent development. It is a good place to learn about the history of the Production and Construction Corps. The museum now has three main exhibition halls. One is "Ancient Shihezi", which displays stone tools, pottery, bronze wares, etc. unearthed from Shihezi, and shows the remains of human activities in Shihezi in ancient times. The second exhibition hall is "Glorious History", which shows people the story of the Production and Construction Corps' settlement and development in the Gobi Desert when it first arrived in Xinjiang. There are many farm tools and clothes used by the soldiers of the army reclamation, reflecting the difficult process at that time. The third exhibition hall is "Extending Footprints", which reflects the current appearance and development of Shihezi.Shihezi · 33.6km from Shawan

Duku Highwayis the common name for the Dushanzi to Kuqa section of National Highway 217. It starts in the north at Dushanzi and ends in the south at Kuqa, the site of the ancient Qiuci kingdom. It spans approx. 561 km and runs through the Tianshan Mountains, cutting the travel distance between northern and southern Xinjiang, which originally required a detour of over 1,000 km, by nearly half. Half of the highway is at an altitude of over 2,000 m, and it crosses four mountain passes covered in snow year-round. One-fifth of the route lies in the alpine permafrost zone, and one-third consists of cliffs and precipices. It took ten years to build this road before it was fully opened to traffic. More than 100 soldiers who built the road rest forever in the Tianshan Mountains, and the Martyrs' Cemetery in Qiao'erma was built to commemorate them. It can be said that every kilometer was hard-won.Kuytun · 63.3km from Shawan

I will use an immersive travel perspective to depict the interwoven scenery of snow-capped mountains, spruce trees, grasslands, and streams at Lujiaowan, incorporating my travel experiences and reflections to create a vivid travelogue. A Rendezvous with the Tianshan Mountains: The Enchanting Lujiaowan I've always longed to visit the grasslands of Xinjiang. Avoiding the bustling tourist hotspots, I traveled to Lujiaowan, nestled at the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains, and only then did I understand what a hidden gem in the mountains truly is. This land, named after the Tianshan deer that inhabit it year-round and whose antlers are scattered there, blends snow-capped mountains, spruce trees, grasslands, and streams into a vibrant natural painting, hiding the most healing and gentle mountain charm. Driving westward, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the scenery gradually came alive. Upon entering the scenic area, a refreshing breeze carrying the scents of grass, pine resin, and the coolness of the snow-capped mountains instantly dispelled the fatigue of the journey. Looking into the distance, the continuous Tianshan Mountains stretch to the horizon, their main peak, Habiga Mountain, perpetually capped with snow, gleaming under the clear sky, both serene and magnificent. Below, layers of dark green spruce forests wind their way along the mountain slopes, their rugged grandeur adding a touch of profound poetry to the vast wilderness. Below lies an endless alpine meadow, a soft, delicate emerald carpet of green carpet stretching to the foot of the snow-capped mountains in the height of summer. Wildflowers dot the grass, swaying gently in the breeze, their subtle fragrance filling the air. Crystal-clear snowmelt streams meander through the meadows, their babbling waters sweet and refreshing—a gift of life from the Tianshan Mountains. Low-hanging blue skies and white clouds seem almost within reach, large, drifting clouds casting dappled shadows across the grasslands—a vast and serene expanse of sky and earth. As the wind rustles through the low-lying grass, cattle and sheep graze leisurely, their white flocks resembling scattered snowflakes on the clouds. Powerful horses gallop and roam freely. In the distance, Kazakh yurts dot the landscape, wisps of smoke rising slowly from their chimneys, and the faint sounds of herdsmen's laughter can be heard. Occasionally, the sound of horses' hooves echoes across the grassland, carrying the purest scent of the mountains and fields. Eagles soar freely in the vast sky, their graceful forms adding a touch of dynamism and grandeur to this tranquil wilderness. Wandering through the mountains and fields of Deer Horn Bay, there's no need to chase after the scenery; every step is a surprise. You can lazily lie on the soft grassy slopes, watching the clouds drift by, listening to the wind rustling through the leaves and the babbling brook; you can ride a horse across the grassland, immersing yourself in the magnificent wind blowing across the mountains; or sit quietly by the stream, enjoying the tranquil peace of the wilderness. Here, there are no crowds, only gentle breezes, green grass, snow-capped mountains, and clear skies. All anxieties and restlessness are soothed by the gentle embrace of this mountain wilderness. Lujiaowan at dusk holds an unparalleled romance. The setting sun casts its golden rays across the mountains, bathing the snow-capped peaks in a soft, golden-red hue. The vibrant green grasslands lose their bright luster, fading into a warm, gentle hue. The colors of heaven and earth gradually shift, creating a scene both tender and healing. As the evening breeze cools, the grass and trees sway gently, and the mountains and fields return to tranquility, leaving only the purest sounds of nature. The most beautiful scenery is never found in crowded, trendy tourist spots, but in the free and pure wilderness of Lujiaowan. It possesses the majestic grandeur of the Tianshan Mountains, the gentle vitality of the grasslands, the poetic beauty of mountains and forests, and the rustic charm of pastoral life. A trip to Lujiaowan is a rendezvous with a hidden gem of the Tianshan Mountains.

We set off at 7 or 8 in the morning. The sun was just right. The top of the mountain was full of clouds, like a fairyland~ and a bit like a snow mountain🏔️~ The scenery along the way was also excellent~ The feeling of driving in the clouds was really great~ Occasionally take a short break on the winding mountain road and breathe the air on the top of the mountain~ Feeling refreshed~ In short, it was from the foot of the mountain to the top of the mountain, and then suddenly the view was very wide, and when I saw cows on the road🐄🐮~ The beautiful Nanshan Prairie has arrived~ The mountains are full of green, and there are cute cows~ I love it so much~ After parking the car, you can go horseback riding~ It's different from riding in the horse farm~ The horses are also tall, handsome, and very docile~ The brother who raises the horses is also good at taking pictures~ I really want to stay here for a while to ride horses and herd cattle~

Tianchi Lake in the Tianshan Mountains truly lives up to its legendary reputation as a fairyland on earth! However, getting to the scenic area is highly dependent on the weather. The shuttle bus takes you up the mountain, and upon arriving at the lakeside, you're instantly awestruck. The crystal-clear lake rests serenely amidst the mountains, with the majestic Bogda Peak standing tall in the distance, surrounded by a vast forest of spruce trees. The snow-capped mountains, the lake, and the blue sky frame each other—a breathtaking panorama that needs no filter. Strolling along the lakeside boardwalk, the air is fresh and invigorating. You can also take a boat trip on the lake for a closer look at the scenery. The scenic area is clearly marked and well-equipped, combining natural beauty with the mythical significance of the Queen Mother of the West. The mountain breeze soothes all travel fatigue, making it a must-visit destination when in Xinjiang.

Narat Grassland is quite beautiful, especially the aerial grassland, which is stunning. You can drive there; just buy a self-driving ticket. There are also shuttle buses. The area is quite large. Panlong Valley Road, however, was just average, not as beautiful as I expected. The river valley grassland was teeming with cattle and sheep, but since it was nearing autumn, the grass wasn't as green anymore. I happened to be there during a grassland music festival. There were no celebrities, and the audience wasn't large, but the park was very well organized. There were large, clean temporary restrooms, and plenty of police, so everything was orderly. The only downside was that the parking lot was a bit far from the concert venue, as the venue was quite large. Because it's relatively remote, there weren't that many tourists there.

Karamay's World Devil City is a Yardang landform sculpted by wind and sand over millions of years. A ride on the scenic train through the Gobi Desert reveals uniquely shaped rock formations rising from the barren landscape. The wind howls through the ravines, giving the place its name, "Devil City." At sunset, the changing light and shadow bathe the hills in a warm gold, creating a desolate yet breathtaking scene. The area possesses a vast, wild atmosphere, perfect for photography. Remember to bring sun and wind protection; it's a must-see natural wonder on the Northern Xinjiang loop.

It's not far from the Duku Highway Museum. The ticket price is reasonable, and you can go in to see the unique landforms. The cliffs are like huge steps, covered with wrinkles that look like they were carved by a knife and axe, giving it a very cold and desolate visual appearance.

Day 5 of Journey to the West Today's itinerary Shihezi-Bole, 360 kilometers Depart at 10 o'clock. The oil price in Shihezi is 8.93 yuan, and the fuel cost is 318.89 yuan. The wind here is relatively small. Walking on the road with less crosswind, the fuel consumption of the car should be slightly reduced. In Shihezi, you must go to the Xinjiang Corps Military Reclamation Museum, which opens at 10:30. In the square at the main entrance of the museum is a huge sculpture of General Wang Zhen, the former commander of the First Column of the Northwest Field Army. The general next to the warhorse holds a telescope in his right hand and his left palm down, as if caressing this beautiful land. The general's signature smile conveys the optimistic spirit of the communist revolutionaries. The old man gave Xinjiang infinite hope and selfless and fearless dedication. The sculpture in the square opposite the museum is the first plow of the military reclamation. It was this first plow that opened up a new world. How many people have paid their youth and lives for it, so that there are green fields and happy lives in the Gobi Desert today. People who visited the museum lined up at the door early. After the visit, I realized that not only Shihezi, but also many people in the vast northern Xinjiang have dedicated their youth to the Gobi Desert like Shihezi. I was listening to the song "Why are the flowers so red" all the way. It sings: "... Why are the flowers so fresh? Why are they so fresh? Hey, they are so fresh that people can't bear to leave. It is watered with the blood of youth." From the barren Gobi Desert in the past to the beautiful Shihezi today, it is the Gobi rose watered with the blood of youth. There are tall and straight poplars and elms with dense branches and leaves on both sides of the road. The endless green fields come into view. Who would think that this was once a Gobi Desert with no grass? Every piece of land and every oasis is sprinkled with the efforts and blood of the Corps. The Corps people planted not only oases here, but also endless hope, which is a Chinese miracle!
