Mount Taishan

Mount Taishan is centered around Mount Taishan, the first of the Five Great Mountains, with steep and towering peaks, and the views of sunrise and sunset from the summit are breathtaking. Sea of clouds often appear among the mountains, and in winter there are spectacular rime ice views. In addition to natural scenery, the mountain also has numerous historical sites, stone inscriptions, religious temples, and other cultural views, with cliff inscriptions and steles scattered throughout the mountain, which is a major feature of Mount Taishan. Mount Taishan has its own highlights in each of the four seasons: in spring, peach and pear blossoms bloom across the mountains; in summer, the mountaintop is lush green and cool, making it a great summer retreat; in fall, the leaves are a mix of red and yellow, dyeing the layered forests in brilliant colors. There are multiple routes to the summit of Mount Taishan. The hiking trail at the Hongmen entrance is the traditional route opened during Emperor Qin Shi Huang's Fengshan ceremony, consisting mainly of stone steps. Walking from Hongmen to Zhongtianmen, you will pass by numerous attractions along the way, including Wanxian Tower, Doumu Palace, Huima Ridge, and Hutiange. This area is also where stone inscriptions are concentrated. After reaching Zhongtianmen, you can take a cable car or walk to Nantianmen and the summit area, where you can see attractions such as Eighteen Bends, Shengxian Archway, Duisong Mountain, Chaoyang Cave, and Wudafu Pines. The Tianwaicun route is a road leading from Tianwaicun to Zhongtianmen, accessible by tour bus, passing by Heilong Pool, Fanzhi Cliff, and Feng Yuxiang's Tomb. After reaching Zhongtianmen, it merges with the latter half of the Hongmen route. Travelers who prefer not to hike can choose this route. The Tianzhufeng route is relatively steep with few visitors, and is a hiking route often taken by outdoor enthusiasts. It features beautiful mountain scenery, including attractions such as Liyu Back, and at the starting point there is also the large-scale live performance "Chinese Mount Taishan: Grand Ceremony of Fengshan." The Taohuayu route is mostly chosen by travelers when descending the mountain. From Tianjie at the summit, take the ropeway to the mountainside, then transfer to a tour bus down to Taohuayu at the foot of the mountain. Along the way, you can enjoy the Colorful Stone Stream scenic area, where the colorful stone patterns at the bottom of the stream are quite magical. Dongyudao is also a walking hiking route, with attractions such as Qingyang Hall, Hanque Gate, and Dongtianmen along the way. Each route ultimately leads to the Daiding tourist area at the summit. Daiding features the main peak of Mount Taishan, Jade Emperor Peak, the Tianjie Scenic Area, as well as attractions such as Sun Viewing Peak, Daguan Peak, Zhanlu Terrace, Bixia Temple, and Confucius Temple. On clear days at the summit, you can gaze at the Yellow River in the distance and admire the wonder of the "Golden Belt of the Yellow River." The Houshiwu area is rich in varied pines and rocks, and there is a cableway leading to the North Heavenly Gate. Many visitors who want to watch the sunrise choose to climb Mount Taishan at night, usually setting off from the Hongmen route, and it is advisable to depart around 11 pm. This route is well lit at night, and a hike of about seven to eight hours will allow you to reach Sun Viewing Peak or Jade Emperor Peak at the summit before sunrise, which are ideal spots for watching the sunrise.China · Tai'an

Millennium City Park

Millennium City Park is located by the Longting Lake in Kaifeng, a large-scale historical and cultural theme park that faithfully recreates the Northern Song Dynasty's capital based on the famous painting "Along the River During the Qingming Festival" by artist Zhang Zeduan, following the original layout at a 1:1 scale. The park is divided into two sections by the Shuangting Bridge: the southern area recreates the bustling urban life of Bianjing, with taverns, teahouses, pawnshops, and artisan workshops lining the streets, where peddlers with shoulder poles and shouting shop assistants move about; while the northern area features imperial gardens, with lakeside halls and quadrangular courtyards standing by the water. Staff and vendors throughout the park wear Song-style attire, accompanied by ancient music and the rhythmic sounds of bells and drums, creating the illusion of "stepping into a painting and traveling back a thousand years in a single day." The architecture here offers visually striking highlights: the Rainbow Bridge spanning the Bian River replicates the famous bridge from ancient paintings, arching like a rainbow—watching grain barges pass beneath recreates the painting's ambiance. Fuyun Pavilion towers above all other structures with its crimson facade and golden-roofed eaves, offering panoramic garden views. The reconstructed Shangshan Gate mirrors Kaifeng's Northern Song dynasty city gates, standing majestic with resplendent paintings as the garden's most imposing structure. Waterside pavilions like Shuixin Xie, Double Pavilion Bridge, and Nine Dragons Bridge dot the emerald waters in picturesque harmony. The daytime highlight is the scattered live performances throughout the park: "Judge Bao inspecting the Bian River grain transport" unfolds on the water by Rainbow Bridge, "Squire Wang's daughter seeking a husband" brings the embroidered ball tossing matchmaking to the streets, and "Yue Fei unhorsing Prince Xiao Liang" stirs up dust with galloping hooves in the drill ground. Folk performances like cockfighting, stilt walking, cuju (ancient football), and pan drumming are interspersed throughout. Families with children can visit Fun Garden and Great Song Games to try archery, dart throwing, rope climbing, and hoop diving—experiencing every Song dynasty game from a thousand years ago—or dress in period costumes at Square Courtyard to take mock imperial exams. Street-side workshops showcase folk crafts like Bian embroidery, Zhuxian Town woodblock prints, official kiln porcelain, and dough figurines, where visitors can watch artisans at work. The park takes on a different face after nightfall: red lanterns light up one after another, and the streets are ablaze with lights, making it seem like a completely different place from daytime. The large-scale water show "Northern Song Dynasty: Splendid Dreams of Dongjing" is performed on Jinglong Lake. The entire show is connected by eight classic Song Dynasty poems and a scroll of "Along the River During the Qingming Festival," transporting the audience back to Dongjing of the Northern Song Dynasty a thousand years ago. The performance lasts approx. 70 minutes, and many travelers specifically reserve their itinerary for the evening to wait for this show. After the performance, you might as well climb the Shangshan Gate tower to overlook the park scenery and the night view of Kaifeng under the lights. Dining in the park is also convenient: the snack street and night market around the Dongjing food area gather Kaifeng snacks like soup dumplings and mutton pancake, perfect for eating while strolling; for a proper sit-down meal, head to Sunyang Restaurant, a recreation of the "main shop" depicted in paintings, and try traditional Henan dishes such as soup dumplings and carp with noodles.China · Kaifeng

Song Du Huangcheng Cultural Tourism Resort is located in the northern part of the old city of Kaifeng, precisely on the site of the imperial palace of the Northern Song Dynasty's Dongjing city. The millennium-old central axis of Kaifeng runs through this area, making it the core zone of the royal culture of the Song Dynasty. Here, you can find the Song-style imperial architecture of the Longting attraction, the tales of the Yang Family Generals at Tianbo Yang's residence, and the calligraphic steles of Han Yuan Stele Forest. The Shuanglong Lane historical and cultural block, 960 Cultural and Creative Park, and Qisheng Corner have transformed old streets and courtyards into Song-style blocks perfect for leisurely exploration. The resort also connects a series of Song culture attractions: Wansui Mountain Great Song Martial Arts City stages year-round martial arts live shows and intangible cultural heritage iron fireworks, while historic sites like the Iron Pagoda, Kaifeng city wall, Zhouqiao and Bian River ruins, Shanshangan Guild Hall, Yanqing Taoist Temple, and Fan Pagoda are scattered across the old city, along with niche spots like the underground wartime grain storage. These places are hard to cover in one day, so we recommend focusing on two or three key sites. After dark, a different experience awaits as the attractions light up in unison. Boarding a painted pleasure boat on the Great Song Imperial River to watch the illuminated pavilions and towers sway with the rippling water is a popular nightlife option here.China · Kaifeng

Wansuishan Martial Arts City is located in the northwest of Kaifeng's urban areaWansuishan Martial Arts City, it is a large-scale attraction built with Song Dynasty culture and wuxia culture as its backdrop. Within the attraction, there are quaint and charming Song Dynasty garden streets and alleys, year-round exciting wuxia and period costume performances, as well as a wealth of entertainment facilities, making it a great place for relaxation and entertainment in Kaifeng, Zhengzhou, and surrounding areas. When visiting Wansuishan Martial Arts City, the first thing you will notice is the beautiful scenery of the attraction. Wansuishan Martial Arts City as a whole creates an atmosphere of the Song Dynasty, among which many views are very eye-catching, such as Wansui Temple, which recreates the splendor of a thousand-year-old ancient temple from the Song Dynasty, the Dragon Altar, which embodies the spirit of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism, the relatively well-preserved ancient city wall of Kaifeng in China, and the "Nine Dragons Waterfall," one of the large man-made stream and waterfall groups in China. What is rare is that the attraction also has a very large area of forest and green space, with a quiet environment, and flowers bloom in season, making it very suitable for photography. Afterward, visitors will notice the unique wuxia features within the attraction. Year-round, multiple wuxia-themed performances are staged here, with several themed shows such as "Cross Slope," "Wu Song Drunkenly Beats Jiang the Gatekeeper," and "Wild Boar Forest" being quite spectacular—definitely not to be missed when visiting. Interactive performances like the "Wuxia Film and Television Experience Hall," "Martial Arts Champion," and "Li Kui Judges a Case" also allow visitors to participate in wuxia stories, offering plenty of fun. In the architectural design of the attraction, there are also many wuxia elements: the Wuxia Road built with large-scale weapons such as the "Heaven-Reliant Sword" and "Overlord Blade," the "Gallant Heroes Portrait" at the Great Song Martial Arts Hall, the "Sword Altar" at Cross Slope, Juxian Manor, and the Martial Arts Arena—all are uniquely distinctive. Additionally, every year during the Spring Festival periodWansuishanLarge-scale temple fairs are held, featuring grand performances, a rich variety of specialty snacks, a dazzling array of handicrafts, and highly distinctive entertainment activities, creating a lively atmosphere. Baotu Spring is located in the bustling downtown area of Jinan, with Thousand Buddha Mountain to the south, Daming Lake attraction to the north, and Quancheng Square to the east. It is a distinctive garden themed around springs, renowned as "the finest spring under heaven" and ranked first among Jinan's "72 famous springs," with a history spanning over 2,000 years. It has also appeared in literary works many times, most notably in Lao She's essay "Baotu Spring." Visitors come here to witness the magnificent sight of the three springs erupting. The main spring is the centerpiece of the park. The spring water splits into three streams, clear and crisp, gushing day and night, and reaching several feet high when the flow is abundant. Around the spring are large stone blocks with railings, where visitors can look down at the spectacular sight of the three springs surging in the pool. Beside the spring stands a stone tablet inscribed with "First Spring" in dark green, written by Emperor Qianlong himself. In addition, nearby are scattered more than thirty famous springs, including Golden Thread Spring, Shuyu Spring, Xibo Spring, Liuxu Spring, Huanghua Spring, and Dukang Spring. Due to the abundant local rainfall in July and August, this is a good season to come and admire the spring water. In midsummer, visitors in the park can have close contact with the spring water. Some springs have no railings around them, and there are stone paths in the pools. Spring water flows over the stone paths, and visitors can go down into the pools to touch the water. Walking on the stone paths, their feet will get wet from the spring water, giving a cool sensation. Besides touching the water, there is also free spring water by the pools for visitors to drink directly. On the east side of the spring is the Wanghe Pavilion Teahouse, which offers visitors specially preparedThis springFragrant tea brewed with water, moderately priced. In addition to the springs, another sight worth seeing in the park is the South Gate. It is magnificently and elegantly decorated. The horizontal plaque above the gate, with the words "Baotu Spring" in golden characters on a blue background, was written by Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty and is acclaimed as the "first gate" of Chinese gardens. Baotu Spring has been flowing continuously since it resumed in September 2003. In addition, the attraction frequently hosts various cultural events. Every year on the first day of the first lunar month, a lantern festival is held in the park, lasting 20 days. In late September each year, there is also a spring water culture festival lasting about 10 days, during which various folk activities, calligraphy and painting exhibitions, and opera performances are available for visitors to enjoy. From late October to late November each year, a chrysanthemum exhibition is also held in the park. In the golden fall season, with all the springs gushing and chrysanthemums and spring water complementing each other, it is well worth a visit. In addition, the attraction has also launched a cruise route. After touring the attraction, visitors who are interested can board a boat at the boat station and sail through Ximen Bridge in Jinan's old town, passing the east gate of Wulongtan Park and entering Wulongtan Lock, Jinan's first passenger lock in history, where they can experience a drop of more than 2 m. Sitting on the east side of the boat, visitors can also see reliefs of the "Eight Scenes of Jinan." Along the way, there are many aquatic plants on the banks, and the river water is so clear that the bottom is visible. The cruise finally passes through Yanbo Bridge and enters the Daming Lake attraction.China · Jinan

Daming Lake Scenic Area

Daming Lake Scenic Area is located in the northeast of central Jinan, in the northern part of the old city, and is a park integrating water scenery, garden landscapes, and ancient architecture. Daming Lake is a natural lake fed by numerous springs within the city, giving rise to the saying "all springs converge here," and its history can be traced back to the Northern Wei period. The attraction is divided into the old scenic area and the new scenic area, with a total of sixteen classic views scattered throughout, connected to the city moat to form a lakeside touring route. Entering the old scenic area from the East Gate, the first thing that greets the eye is the Zeng Causeway Winding by the Water. Located in the eastern part of the attraction, the Zeng Causeway is a long embankment connecting the north and south, and it was also the necessary route from the south shore of the lake to Beizhu Pavilion in the past. Willows cast shade along the causeway, and the lake waters sparkle on both sides. Beside the Zeng Causeway, the Chaoran Tower offers a high vantage point for overlooking the entire lake scenery, and this spot is known as "Chaoran Zhiyuan." Walking south along the Zeng Causeway toward the South Gate leads into the new scenic area, where seven bridges of distinct styles form the "Seven Bridges in Wind and Moonlight." Among them, the Quehua Bridge has a long history and is one of the more famous ones. The Lao She Memorial Hall is also located here, displaying Lao She's life and creative experience in Jinan. Passing through the South Gate and heading west, visitors arrive at "Jiaxuan's Lingering Charm." Jiaxuan Garden, originally named Jiaxuan Shrine, was built to commemorate the Southern Song patriotic poet Xin Qiji, and within the garden visitors can experience his military career and bold, unconstrained poetic style. You can take a cruise to the small island in the middle of the lake. The Lixia Pavilion on the island is one of Jinan's famous pavilions; its plaque with red background and golden characters was handwritten by Emperor Qianlong, and the full text of "Ode to the Ancient Li Pavilion" by Pu Songling is engraved on the wall. Continue by boat to the northern part of the attraction near the East Gate, where the towering Huibo Tower stands. Climbing the tower, you can gaze south toward Thousand Buddha Mountain and look north toward Mount Que and Mount Hua in the distance. At sunset, the lake surface sparkles with rippling light—this is the "Huibo Sunset Glow." Descend Huibo Tower and walk west past the North Gate to reach "Canglang Lotus Charm," where the Iron Lord Shrine, Canglang Pavilion, and Small Canglang Pavilion are located. In summer, when the lotus flowers are in full bloom, the scenery is especially beautiful. Inside the Small Canglang Pavilion, you can also read the famous couplet by Liu Fenggao: "Lotus on four sides, willows on three; a city of mountain scenery, half a city of lake."China · Jinan

Eight Spring Gap is located in the middle section of the Taihang Mountains Grand Canyon. Originally named "Badao Water," it takes its name from the eight springs in the canyon that emerge from a single source. The attraction covers an area of approx. 24 km², with a low point at approx. 600 m above sea level and a high point at approx. 1,400 m, a drop of approx. 1,100 m, combining the grandeur of northern mountains and rivers with the soft beauty of Jiangnan waterscapes. The attraction is divided into four touring areas: the gatehouse view, the canyon view, the cableway view, and the trail view, with water routes, land routes, and aerial cableways connecting in alternation to create a three-dimensional touring experience. The water route begins at the sightseeing dam pier, where visitors board a boat to enter the gorge, passing through the emerald waters of the high gorge and calm lake, with cliffs pressing in on both sides and the full force of a sliver of sky visible at a glance. After landing, visitors follow the Quiet Valley Listening to Springs and the Hanging Streams Dripping Emerald deeper into the canyon, where spring water gathers into streams and eight flows tumble over flat rocks, their sound echoing at the bottom of the valley. Pot Hole Grotto is a continuous arc-shaped grotto formed by mountain spring water eroding the mountain body over hundreds of millions of years—an easily overlooked detail that is well worth a stop. Along the trail route, the Cliff Hanging Ladder is built against the cliff face at approx. 60 m above ground, and walking on it offers a panoramic view of the dam; the sightseeing elevator is built vertically against the mountain, with an operating height of approx. 200 m, and a cantilevered transparent viewing platform at the top, making it the highest point for overlooking the canyon. The Cloud Cliff Walk consists of thousands of steps and several thousand meters of cliffside plank walkway, hanging among the clouds on the precipice and leading to high points such as Yuhuang Square and North Heaven Gate. North Heaven Gate is a natural stone arch, over 20 m high, standing atop the peak and echoing the pictographic rock views such as the Chinese Zodiac Worshipping Heaven on the opposite ridge. The Turning Cableway spans more than ten mountain ridges, offering an aerial panorama of the canyon and a commanding view of the layered Taihang mountain scenery from above. It is advisable to allow ample time, as the water, land, and air touring options each offer different viewing experiences; along the way, small views close to the cliff face, such as Pot Hole Grotto and Dripping Valley Nine Lotuses, are easily overlooked and deserve extra attention to the signs along the path.China · Huguan

As night falls over the Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden, craftsmen raise their hands, sending molten iron soaring into the air. In an instant, golden light explodes, transforming into a shower of fireflies that rain down into the Bian River, reflecting a galaxy of stars on its shimmering surface. Along the riverbank, the lights of Song-style pavilions flicker, the golden blossoms vanishing in an instant, creating an atmosphere as if stepping into a radiant Song Dynasty night from the "Dongjing Menghualu" (Record of the Splendor of the Eastern Capital).

It's very worthwhile, but it's also very crowded, which might slightly detract from the overall experience. However, the people are incredibly welcoming, and there are many beautiful spots for taking photos. The food is also affordable and inexpensive, which kids enjoy. I'll definitely go back when it's less crowded.

The park is huge; I read online that it takes a whole day to explore it, and it truly is. The NPCs seemed only friendly to young people; they were rather indifferent to us 40+ year olds, probably thinking we wouldn't know how to enjoy ourselves. Prices within the park are very cheap, and we even saw Wang Po up close, which was quite interesting. The parking lot is a bit far from the park itself, but thankfully there's a free shuttle bus. It's very crowded, so those with children should be extra careful.

The scenery in the scenic area is quite nice. Route A starts from the boat tour, and after disembarking, climbs up the canyon to the cable car station. This section can only be done on foot, with no other transportation, so you must choose Route B, which involves walking downhill. Taking the cable car takes you to the summit, where there's a smaller mountain called Jade Emperor Peak, which isn't too difficult. After the tour, you can descend the mountain. There's an aerial shuttle bus service for an extra 20 yuan, which saves you a section of climbing. After getting off the shuttle bus, you can take an elevator to the exit.
