Xi'an Drum Tower
No. 17 of Best Things to Do in Shaanxi

Xi'an Drum Tower

7.5
4.6/5
9.8k reviews

The Xi'an Drum Tower faces the bell tower and is one of the iconic buildings of the ancient city. The drum tower was first built in the 13th year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty (1380). Climbing the drum tower, you can see a large drum 1.8 m high and 24 red drums engraved with the 24 solar terms, which are very impressive. The drum tower also exhibits furniture, porcelain, and calligraphy and paintings by Qi Baishi from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Xi'an Drum Tower is one of the largest drum towers in China. Its base is a tall rectangular platform with north-south passageways that are 6 m in both height and width. The tower on the platform has two stories, upper and lower, with a roof covered in green glazed tiles. On the south side of Xi'an Drum Tower, there is a plaque inscribed with "Land of culture and military prowess," which, together with the plaque at Shanhaiguan, is hailed as "China's two great plaques." Unfortunately, it was destroyed during turbulent times, and what we see now is a replica. When visiting Xi'an Drum Tower, you can also enjoy the ancient-inspired "morning bell and evening drum" performance. Between the drum tower and the bell tower lies the bell and drum tower square, adorned with green grass and red flowers, featuring a uniquely designed musical fountain. The night view here is beautiful, perfect for photography. Behind the drum tower is the Muslim Quarter, home to numerous delicious foods.

Baota Mountain

7.4
4.5/5
5.1k reviews

Baota Mountain is located in the center of Yan'an city, by the side of the Yan River, and is named after the pagoda on the mountain. The pagoda was first built in the Tang Dynasty, and the existing structure is a pavilion-style brick pagoda rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty. The pagoda, together with the mountain, the Yan River, and the bridge, forms the city skyline of Yan'an and is also a symbol of the revolutionary holy land in people's hearts. The poet He Jingzhi wrote in "Returning to Yan'an" the famous line, "How many times in my dreams have I returned to Yan'an, embracing Baota Mountain with both hands," adding emotional weight to this mountain. The mountain is densely scattered with historical sites, including Song dynasty cliff carvings, Fan Gong Well, beacon towers, Star-gazing Tower, Jialing Academy, ancient city walls, and the former site of the Japanese Workers' and Peasants' School. Among them, the inscriptions "Jialing Mountain" in clerical script and "My chest harbors tens of thousands of armored soldiers" by Fan Zhongyan of the Northern Song dynasty have long been renowned. An iron bell cast in the Ming dynasty still hangs beside the pagoda, which was used for timekeeping and alarms during the CPC Central Committee's Yan'an period. Ascending the mountain path to Star-gazing Tower and beacon tower areas offers panoramic views of Yan'an city and the Yan River. After nightfall, the mountain and pagoda illuminate, and gazing back at the lit pagoda from near Yan River Bridge remains a favorite photo spot for many travelers.

Qingmuchuan Ancient Town
No. 10 of Night Attractions in Shaanxi

Qingmuchuan Ancient Town

7.3
4.5/5
757 reviews

Qingmuchuan Ancient Town boasts picturesque scenery, pristine ecology, and simple folk customs. The ancient town has a long history; in ancient times, it was an area where Qiang and Han people lived together, and it gradually prospered during the Ming Dynasty, with most residences built during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Today, the ancient town retains large clusters of ancient streets, ancestral halls, plank roads, and traditional dwellings, and has been listed as a national key cultural relic protection unit. Here, the river runs through the town, and people go about their various tasks at a leisurely pace, enjoying a free and easy life. Huilongchang Old Street was built during the Chenghua period of the Ming Dynasty. The street is 800 m long and 4 m wide, and has largely retained its ancient appearance. The Wei Family Courtyard was built by Wei Futang, a well-known gentleman of the time. Three sections of the Wei Family Courtyard remain, along with a middle school he advocated establishing, all well preserved. There are also ancestral halls built during the Ming and Qing dynasties for the Qu, Wei, Zhao, and Tu families, as well as erected steles with inscriptions. Five km from the old street lies an ancient commercial trade route from the Ming and Qing dynasties leading to Sichuan and Gansu. It stretches 60 km, following the river upward, with paths cut into the cliffs, making the route very steep and dangerous. The 2008 Wenchuan earthquake caused parts of the ridges and walls of the Wei family residence to crack and collapse. The Huilongchang old street, built during the Ming Chenghua period and over 800 m long, was also damaged, and many old houses had collapsed. Because aftershocks continued in Qingmuchuan Ancient Town, the preservation condition of these historic sites was concerning, but they were fully restored after the earthquake, and their appearance has returned to its original state.

Xi'an Muslim Quarter

Xi'an Muslim Quarter

7.3
4.3/5
13k reviews

The Xi'an Muslim Quarter is not a single street but a collective name for several streets within the Hui community in the heart of Xi'an, comprising Beiyuanmen, Beiguangji Street, West Yangshi, Dapiyuan, and others. Locals also refer to it as "Huifang" or "Fangshang." The history of Hui settlement in this area dates back over a thousand years, when Muslim merchants traveling along the Silk Road gradually settled here, forming the cultural landscape seen today. The neighborhood is home to numerous mosques of varying ages, such as the Great Mosque in Huajue Lane, the Daxuexi Lane Mosque, and the Guangji Street Mosque. Tens of thousands of Hui residents live around these mosques, maintaining traditional religious customs. This is the go-to destination for Xi'an's local cuisine, where you can sample virtually every authentic flavor in one place: yangrou paomo (mutton soup with crumbled flatbread), guantang baozi (soup dumplings), grilled skewers, shuipen yangrou (mutton in broth), pickled vegetable fried rice, cured beef and mutton, liangpi (cold noodles), sour soup dumplings, hulatang (peppery soup), and more. After eating your fill, you can pick up local-style pastries, dried fruits, and candied treats as souvenirs to bring home. The neighborhood sits right next to the Drum Tower and Bell Tower, and most visitors start their stroll from the Beiyuanmen area, working their way through the alleys to taste the food and soak in the local atmosphere.

Ganquan Canyon
No. 3 of Best Things to Do in Yan'an

Ganquan Canyon

7.2
4.7/5
2.8k reviews

Ganquan Canyon is located in Ganquan County, Yan'an, Shaanxi, and is also known as Yucha Canyon. It is a group of red sandstone fissures hidden deep in the ravines of the Loess Plateau, hailed as a "natural fissure wonder of the Loess Plateau." Legend has it that an ancient earthquake split the mountain, and years of rainwater and flash floods carved out the now winding and graceful ravines. Due to its striking resemblance to Antelope Canyon in the U.S., it is often called the "Chinese Antelope Canyon" by photography enthusiasts. The attraction consists of multiple ravines, including Huashu Gully, Longba Gully, Mudan Gully, and Thread of Sky Gully. Among them, Huashu Gully is renowned for its smooth, layered rock walls, offering both an easy hike and stunning photo opportunities, making it the highlight of the area. The true highlight of this canyon is its play of light and shadow. Around noon on sunny days, sunlight pours straight down through the narrow gap overhead, with warm hues of ochre and gold flowing slowly along the curves of the rock walls, while moss clinging to the surfaces adds a touch of emerald green. Standing at the canyon floor and looking up, the sky narrows into a bright, slender line—between the alternating light and shadow, every casual snapshot becomes strikingly picturesque. On overcast days or during early/late hours when light slants in, the rock walls appear noticeably duller, somewhat diminishing the visual impact. Here are a few tips for your visit: Huashu Gully is gentle and open, ideal for leisurely photography; Longba Gully alternates between wide and narrow sections, offering more adventurous fun; the narrowest part of Yixiantian is particularly cramped, so extra caution is needed when passing through. Some gullies occasionally have accumulated water and mud, making the paths slippery—wearing anti-slip shoes is advisable. If you're here for the light effects, try to schedule your gully visit around noon on sunny days.

Qinling Wildlife Park is located in Chang'an District, Xi'an. The zoo is divided into different areas, including walking tour area, driving area (herbivore area and beast area). It also has animal performance venues, small animal parks, amusement parks, rare animal breeding bases, etc. The walking area is located in the western half of the zoo, and the animal buildings include the giant panda hall, golden monkey hall, marine performance hall, amphibian and reptile hall, etc. The driving area includes the herbivorous area and the wild animal area (the cost of the sightseeing bus is included in the Adimission Ticket of the Attraction ). The herbivorous animal exhibition part of the driving area is located in the eastern half of the zoo, which is divided into two parts, the east and west. The east half is the herbivorous animals native to Africa, including the giraffe hall, zebra hall, wildebeest hall, and antelope hall; the west half is the herbivorous animals native to Asia, including the white-lipped deer unique to China, the sand Bactrian camel, and the yak. The carnivore exhibit in the drive area is located in the southern part of the zoo, and from east to west there are tigers, African lions, bears, and wolves. If you want to see the animals up close, you can take the "feeding car" in the Attraction(the fare is based on the on-site price, not included in the Attraction Adimission Ticket, and tourists are willing to buy it). There is also a small train in the park (the fare is based on the on-site price and tourists can purchase it voluntarily). There is also a marine animal performance hall in the zoo that provides visitors with exciting and thrilling performances. The specific time of the animal show is subject to the announcement of the Attraction on the day. During holidays, there will be more performances than usual.

The Mount Taibai National Forest Park
No. 8 of Fall Viewing Attractions in Shaanxi

The Mount Taibai National Forest Park

7.1
4.5/5
3.8k reviews

The Mount Taibai National Forest Park is located on the northern slope of Mount Taibai, the main peak of the Qinling Mountains. Within the park, Baxian Terrace stands at an elevation of over 3,700 m, towering above all other peaks in the Qinling range. The dramatic vertical drop creates distinct layers of vegetation and climate zones as altitude increases—while the plains below swelter in midsummer heat, higher elevations bring a penetrating chill. In ancient times, the frigid summit retained snow even in June, earning "Taibai snow in June" a place among the eight scenic views of Guanzhong. Though snow in June is now rare, the alpine region still preserves Quaternary glacial relics such as cirque lakes and stone seas, offering a rare view of high-altitude landforms. Most 1-day tours turn back at "Sky circle earth square," which sits at an elevation of over 3,500 m on the main ridge of the Qinling Mountains—the watershed dividing China's north and south. Streams north of the ridge flow into the Yellow river, while those south feed the Yangtze river. On clear days, you can overlook rolling seas of clouds. The true summit ascent to Baxian Terrace begins here. A standard hiking itinerary to the peak takes approx. two days, starting from Sky circle earth square, passing Xiaowengong Temple and Dawengong Temple to reach the alpine cirque lake Daye Hai, then making the final push to the summit, with an overnight stay at Xiaowengong Temple. The Mount Taibai National Forest Park's remote areas feature complex terrain and wildlife including large predators. Whether traveling by vehicle, cable car, or on foot, always stay on developed routes and avoid venturing off main paths. The first day of the seventh lunar month is the traditional temple fair of The Mount Taibai National Forest Park, when crowds of visitors flock to the mountain, creating a lively atmosphere and offering a great opportunity to experience mountain folk customs.

Because we had children with us, we opted to take the sightseeing bus up and down, which was very relaxing. We got a close look at the pagoda, took photos, and learned about its history, especially the plaques at the north and south gates: "Soaring high above the heavens, overlooking the mortal world"—for over 1000 years, the pagoda has achieved this.

Qingmuchuan Ancient Town is known as "one foot in three provinces" and "a place where a rooster's crow can be heard in three provinces". The town has 260 existing ancient buildings, most of which are decorated with wood carving, brick carving, stone carving, and painting techniques. They are exquisitely crafted and have a strong local style.

Add this to your itinerary if you're visting Xi'an! I have been to the quarter 3 times. Walk along the main path of the quarter BUT make sure you also walk down the narrow alleyways! There are LOTS of shops and food stalls you don't want to miss. Open 24/7 too so make sure you visit!

I visited Ganquan Grand Canyon during the National Day holiday, avoiding the crowds at major cities and tourist attractions. It was a less crowded but still excellent experience! Recommended by China National Geographic magazine, definitely worth a visit! It's chilly and damp inside the canyon, so be sure to wear a thick coat. I wouldn't recommend coming in winter; it would probably be too cold.

After a snowfall, Mount Taibai is like a long ink painting scroll atop the main peak of the Qinling Mountains. Icefalls hang suspended, rime adorns the branches, and a sea of clouds surges between the snow-capped ridges. Since ancient times, this place has been known for the spectacular scenery of "Taibai snow in June," a wonder of Guanzhong, both tranquil and magnificent.

Famen Temple is a national treasure. The Famen Underground Palace, guarded for a thousand years, still shines with Buddhist light. The power of faith endures through the ages. The Ming Dynasty people had already discovered the underground palace, but they quietly protected it, allowing the relics to continue to be passed down for centuries, until finally the Buddha's relics saw the light of day again. With Doubao (a local deity), there's no need for a guide. The park is intentionally large; if you're in a hurry, take the sightseeing bus; if you have time, explore on foot. While Famen Temple itself was built later, the pagoda and underground palace are millennia-old relics, and the many rare treasures unearthed there are well worth seeing.

Da Ci'en Temple is where the Buddhist monk Xuanzang translated Buddhist scriptures. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda is located within the temple grounds, giving it a rich historical significance. The temple grounds are serene, with ancient cypress trees reaching for the sky and solemn halls. A stroll through the temple allows one to quietly experience the Buddhist culture of Tang Dynasty Chang'an. Climbing the pagoda offers panoramic views of Qujiang. The temple also displays many precious cultural relics. A guided tour is recommended to better understand the story of Xuanzang's journey to the west. It gets quite crowded; visiting during off-peak hours provides a better experience. A visit to Xi'an is definitely worthwhile.
