Penang Hill

7.9
4.4/5
647 reviews

Penang Hill is located in the central part of Penang Island, known as "Bukit Bendera" in Malay, meaning "flag hill," and consists of several continuous peaks. Due to its high elevation and dense forests, the hilltop is much cooler than the lowlands. During the British colonial era, it served as a retreat for officials, and many old colonial houses from that time still dot the area. Most travelers choose to take the century-old cable car to ascend. This mountain railway opened in the 1920s and was later fully renovated. As the cabins climb the steep slope, the views of George Town and the Penang Strait gradually unfold beneath. Upon reaching the summit, the vista opens up: on clear days, the skyline of George Town, the shimmering waters of the Penang Strait, and the verdant mountains of the Malay Peninsula across the strait are all clearly visible. Here, the colors of the sea, sky, and land blend, and one can truly appreciate why Penang is often called the "Pearl of the Orient." The Habitat, a rainforest discovery center at the summit, is also worth a visit. A 1.6 km natural trail winds along the edge of an ancient rainforest over 100 million years old. The elevated canopy walkway, Langur Way, offers a bird's-eye view of the forest, while the treetop observation deck, Curtis Crest, is an ideal spot to watch the sunset. Over 2,000 species of flora and fauna inhabit this forest. If time permits, consider heading up in the evening—after sunset, wait for nightfall as the lights of George Town and the strait gradually illuminate like a starry sky, a sight many travelers find unforgettable. Those who enjoy hiking can also trek to the summit via the old mountain trails. A reminder: temperatures vary greatly between day and night at the summit, and fog is common, so bring a light jacket. Weekends and holidays see more cable car riders, so going early or during off-peak hours is advisable.

Georgetown UNESCO Historic SiteLocated on the northeast coast of Penang Island, Malaysia, the entire old town was inscribed on the World Heritage List together with Melaka in 2008. Since its founding in 1786, the old town has been home to generations of Chinese, Malay, and Indian communities. The continuous rows of Nanyang-style shophouses, clan associations, temples, and churches are well-preserved, with layers of multicultural traces overlapping in the same neighborhood; walking is the ideal way to experience it. The old streets here are also very distinctive: the mural "Kids on Bicycle" on Armenian Street is by Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic, where visitors can pose for photos with the actual bicycle depicted in the painting, and there is often a queue in front of the wall; the Khoo Kongsi on Cannon Street is an exquisitely carved Hokkien clan temple; the Clan Jetties of Penang at Weld Quay were built by Chinese clans of the same surname in the late 19th century, with stilt houses lined up along wooden walkways extending into the sea; places of worship for different faiths, such as the Goddess of Mercy Temple and the Kapitan Keling Mosque, stand side by side, which is why the street is known as the "Street of Harmony."

574 reviews

Penang Street Art is an open-air district in the old town of George Town, famous for its street murals and wrought-iron caricatures. In the past, tourists came to Penang mostly for the food, but now many make a special trip just to wait in line in front of old walls to take photos with the murals. In 2012, Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic brought his "Mirrors George Town" mural series to the old streets. The images were inspired by the daily lives of locals, and George Town's streets have had mural art ever since. The BBC even called him "Malaysia's Banksy." Accompanying the murals are dozens of wrought-iron caricature sculptures left behind by the "Marking George Town" project, which use exaggerated caricature styles to tell the history and daily life of the old streets.

Clan Jetties of Penang

5.8

433 reviews

Clan Jetties of Penang are not a single bridge but the collective name for a cluster of stilt villages along the coast of George Town, Penang. At the end of the 19th century, Hokkien immigrants who had gone to Southeast Asia settled here, making a living by using barges to transport goods, running ferries to carry passengers, fishing offshore, and trading firewood and charcoal. They drove wooden piles into the mudflats, laid boardwalks as streets, and built raised stilt houses for homes. People of the same clan and surname lived together on each jetty, and each jetty took its name from that surname. After more than a hundred years, seven jetties remain: Ong Jetty, Lim Jetty, Chew Jetty, Tan Jetty, Lee Jetty, New Jetty (Mixed Surname Jetty), and Yeoh Jetty. The streets on the jetties are boardwalks suspended over the sea, with rows of stilt houses lining both sides and extending out into the water. Each jetty has its own character: Chew Jetty is lively, with many souvenir shops and food stalls along the boardwalk, making it a good starting point for exploring; Tan Jetty is quieter, with its pier stretching far out into the sea and ending at a red Mazu temple built over the water, a great spot for photographing the stilt houses and the sea. It is common to walk on the creaking boards toward the sea, feel the sea breeze, and watch ferries and cargo boats travel back and forth across the strait, scenes that are part of everyday life here.

Pinang Peranakan MansionLocated in the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site, this museum is dedicated to showcasing Baba Nyonya culture. "Peranakan" refers to the Baba Nyonya, the Straits Chinese who have settled here for generations, blending Malay customs with the lifestyle of the British colonial era. The museum restores the furnishings of a wealthy Baba merchant's home from a century ago, with over 1,000 pieces of Nyonya clothing, jewelry, furniture, and daily artifacts displayed throughout the rooms. The long dining table offers a glimpse into the elaborate hospitality of a Nyonya family. Inside the Chung Keng Kwee Ancestral Temple, located right next to the mansion, stands a life-sized statue of Chung Keng Kwee, with family portraits hanging on the walls—a spot many visitors easily overlook. Films and television shows like "The Little Nyonya" have been filmed here.

There are 13 different sets in the museum, including Southeast Asia, China, Egypt, Europe, America, and Japan. The realistic scenes are matched with lights, making visitors feel like they are in the real world. Recreate the scene of midnight bells and grudges, have dinner with vampires, and learn the amazing stories and origins behind the ghosts while challenging your courage. Wonderfood Museum

134 reviews

The WonderFoodMuseum, a food paradise, has finally welcomed its first food museum in Penang, but the food here can only be seen, not eaten, because all the food on display here are fake and "exaggerated" versions of simulated food models . WonderFoodMuseum is to take you through the food of Penang. The food displayed in the museum includes Chinese food, Malay food, Indian food and traditional Baba Nyonya food. Not just gourmet food, but even food models larger than people. The curator also said that in order to encourage support for the anti-eating shark fin movement, the museum specially displayed slaughtered sharks and shark fins in one area to bring out the message with a three-dimensional effect. Because only a living example can let the public know such delicious food, and then there is a huge price to pay. There is also a mini "sister and brother riding together" in the museum, so tourists can hunt for treasures and find this little surprise. In the future, a map of Penang food will be displayed in the museum, and tourists can directly find local food on the map after visiting.

Booking the entrance tickets to The Habitat Penang Hill on Trip.com was incredibly convenient. I was accompanying my parents, so I wanted everything to go smoothly—the instant confirmation meant absolutely no hassle, and we were able to enter without any waiting. We completely fell in love with the concept of the place and how beautifully they portray the natural rainforest while promoting conservation. It’s a very peaceful and well-maintained environment. After our walk, we took a break at The Habitat (Kommune), their on-site concept store and cafe. We enjoyed some great coffee and cake, and while browsing the retail section, I discovered Vase Creation—a really interesting Malaysian personal care brand. It was a wonderful local find to end our day. Highly recommend this attraction and booking through Trip.com for a stress-free experience!

Visited The Top Penang using the Super Saver Pass and it is one of the best couple activities here because indoor activities and viewing outdoor decks are all in the same place. Best highlight for me was the Skybridge. The panoramic views across the city, mountain, clouds and the sea are breathtaking. The boutique aquarium was very well-maintained too, with coral setups, feeding zones, and air-conditioned rooms. There were so many different fish, rays and also moray eels. My husband loved the Tech Dome, it's got so many hands-on exhibits and games. He even paid 15rmb extra to do the combo activities inside (G-force, G drop, wall climbing)It took us about 4 hours to finish all 11 activities inside. We arrived at around 2:00pm and finished by 6:00pm. There was a long queue at the ticket counter but since we've bought it online, we were able to redeem at the kiosk nearby. Very smooth process and helpful staff nearby.

Penang Street Art in George Town is an absolute must-visit! Walking through the vibrant streets feels like exploring an open-air contemporary museum. The interactive murals, especially the famous kids on a bicycle, are incredibly creative and blend perfectly with the historic charm of the old buildings. It is a lot of fun posing with the artwork and hunting them down around every corner. The area also has a fantastic atmosphere with lovely cafes and souvenir shops nearby. I highly recommend visiting early in the morning to beat the heat and avoid the crowds for the best photos

The Clan Jetties offer a unique glimpse into history, but honestly, there is not much to do besides a quick stroll. I love the rustic waterfront vibe, yet it feels quite short. It’s a nice, simple walk if you want a quiet moment by the sea!

Komtar is a famous landmark in George Town, Penang, Malaysia. Its name derives from "Penang" and "Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak," and it serves as one of the state's main commercial and administrative centers. The building's design integrates commercial, retail, office, and government uses. Originally constructed in 1974 and completed in 1986, it stands approximately 249 meters tall with 65 floors, making it one of the tallest buildings in Southeast Asia at the time. In recent years, Komtar has undergone numerous renovations and enhancements, including the addition of a glass skywalk (The Rainbow Skywalk), offering visitors breathtaking views of George Town from above. The building is not only a prominent landmark in Penang but also a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.

This place was located near my hotel so it was quite convenient to pay a visit to. Overall the value of money that you’d get from this place is great, considering the amount of decor and detail that was put into the museum. The ghosts weren’t scary but were really interesting to learn about. There are descriptions and the names of the different types of ghosts as well as the folklore behind each one. Id recommend paying a visit to this place if you have wanted to try something different and unique that isn’t scary but is more a showcase of the ghosts.
