Maasai Mara National Reserve

Maasai Mara National Reserve features diverse landscapes such as open grasslands, acacia woodlands, and riverine forests. It is home to approx. 95 species of mammals and 450 species of birds, and is the shared habitat of Africa's Big Five—lions, leopards, African elephants, African buffaloes, and black rhinos. Animal distribution varies across different areas of the reserve: herds of zebras, giraffes, and antelopes forage on the grasslands; various birds and monkey troops inhabit the acacia woodlands; and the banks of the Mara River are the territory of hippos and crocodiles—hippos often float half-submerged in the shallows, while crocodiles lurk in the murky water, waiting for an opportunity. During game drives, different areas offer distinct viewing experiences. From July to September each year, millions of wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles migrate north from the Serengeti in Tanzania into the reserve in search of fresh pastures. When the herds cross the Mara River, they face the threat of turbulent currents and crocodiles; this is known as the Crossing of Heaven and is an iconic scene of the Great Migration. Around October, the herds gradually return south, and the grasslands return to peace.Masai Mara · 0m from downtown

On the vast grasslands of Kenya live the Maasai, a nomadic people known for their vibrant red cloaks and resilient spirit. Stepping into a Masai Mara village is like entering a vivid tapestry where humanity and nature, tradition and modernity, are intertwined. These villages are typically enclosed by massive circular fences made of thorny bushes to protect against wild animals. Along the perimeter are rows of low, circular huts constructed by the women using a mixture of mud, branches, and cow dung. Inside, there are no windows, with only small holes for ventilation and light. Though dim, they house the entire family. This place is not only a cultural symbol of Kenya but also a living testament to human adaptation to nature. Here, you can witness primal survival wisdom and feel the struggle and resilience of tradition under the pressures of modern society. If you crave a soul-stirring journey, this place will, in its raw and authentic way, make you rethink the definitions of life and civilization.Mara Simba · 746m from downtown

Tarek flows through the Masai Mara grassland, originating in the Kinyei area in the northeast of the Masai Mara Reserve, passing through the middle of the Masai Mara Reserve from east to west, and flowing into the north-south Mara River. Like the Mara River, there are many hotels along the Tarek River, where wildebeest can also be seen crossing the river during the Great Migration season, but the scale and shock are inferior to the Mara River.Mara Simba · 2.4km from downtown

Kenya 🇰🇪 【Masai Mara】 The Great Migration in the Masai Mara is a top choice, showcasing all five of Africa's Big Five. From July to October, there's a chance to witness the crossing of the Milky Way. Every year from July to August, tens of thousands of wildebeest migrate from Tanzania, along with zebras, elephants, giraffes, and more. A spectacular hunting battle unfolds on this grassland. This is a world-renowned wildlife paradise. 95% of the footage from CCTV's "Animal World" program was filmed here.

The Tarek River in the Masai Mara National Park is the river of life in the Masai Mara Park. It is the water source for many wild animals and their habitat. Around here you can see all the animals living in the Masai Mara, including hippos, crocodiles, etc. The river is really full of vitality.

We did hot air ballooning in the Masai Mara which was amazing but we felt it was overpriced. The vehicle we used for the safari was a 4WD van. I only wish the vehicle was more comfortable and sturdy. We booked fantastic tented camp accommodations in all 3 destinations. On our last day out we also did the Giraffe Center in Nairobi. It was not in the itinerary but Kizito and the team arranged it and made sure we could visit. I highly recommend East African Adventures, you can trust them and have a great trip with great memories.

If you choose the northern area, UDO's turbans offer plenty of accommodation (remember to bring food and water if you want to cook. You can do some walks without a guide, although you may get lost unless you stick to the routes that drive the car but
