Peter and Paul Fortress

Peter and Paul Fortress is located on the Neva River in the city center and is an iconic ancient building in St. Petersburg. The fortress was laid by Peter the Great on Rabbit Island in 1703, where Peter the Great broke ground earlier to build St. Petersburg, and has stood for more than three centuries. The Peter and Paul Fortress has buildings such as Peter and Paul Cathedral, the Bell Tower, St. Peter's Gate, Peter the Great's Boathouse, the Mint, the Arsenal, the Kronwerk Fortress, and the December Revolutionary Monument. The most famous of them is the Peter and Paul Cathedral, which has a solemn appearance and a magnificent interior, with copper-plated chandeliers and colored crystal chandeliers. The interior walls of the church are decorated with 43 intricately carved woodcut statues. The church houses the tombs of the Russian tsars from Peter the Great to Alexander III, and many princes are also buried here. The gleaming spire of the church's tall bell tower is a symbol of Russian domination on the Neva River and the Baltic Sea Territory. First pass through the Ivanov Gate. The gate leading from the square to the fortress castle is called Petrov Gate, and it is decorated with a double-headed eagle in relief. The rear wall surrounding the fortress is 12 meters high and 2.5 to 4 meters wide, and there are also 6 bastions. Among them, the Nafushkin Fortress facing the Neva River will launch an empty shell into the air at noon every day to announce the time to the residents of the city. On the south side of the fortress are several military-related buildings, which have now been converted into museums. The St. Petersburg History Museum is also located here. This is a large-scale and rich museum that displays historical materials in the area from the Stone Age. It also uses small models, videos, etc. to display, which is very interesting. In addition, scattered along the battlements of the fortress is also a good way to visit the Peter and Paul Fortress, with amazing views of the Neva River and the cityscape on the opposite bank.Saint Petersburg · 31.1km from Kronshtadt

Kazan Cathedral

484 reviews
Kazan Cathedral is an Orthodox cathedral located next to Nevsky Prospect. Designed by architect Voronikhin, construction began in the early 19th century and took 10 years to complete. The side of the cathedral facing the street features an iconic semicircular colonnade: nearly 100 Corinthian columns arranged in several rows embrace the square in front, making this curved colonnade one of the most recognizable structures on Nevsky Prospect. The cathedral is named after the Our Lady of Kazan icon enshrined within, which has long been a center of worship for believers. The main dome is painted with an image of the Virgin Mary, surrounded by sculptures and murals of biblical figures, creating an interior that is both magnificent and solemn. It also serves as a war memorial: Field Marshal Kutuzov, the commander of the Russian army during the 1812 war, is buried inside. Trophies such as captured French military flags are displayed near his tomb, and bronze statues of Kutuzov and another marshal, Barclay de Tolly, stand in the square in front of the colonnade. The cathedral remains an active Orthodox place of worship. When visiting, you will often see flickering candlelight and people praying before icons, and you may sometimes catch a service in progress. As it is a religious site, please remain quiet and dress appropriately when entering. The semicircular colonnade and the marshals' bronze statues in front are classic photo spots. A convenient route is to walk around the colonnade, then head inside to see the dome murals and Kutuzov's tomb.Saint Petersburg · 31.9km from Kronshtadt

Palace Square

4.8/5
175 reviews
Palace Square is the heart of Saint Petersburg. The green and white Winter Palace stands on the north side, and the Triumphal Arch of the General Staff Building on the south side faces the square; passing through the arch leads to Nevsky Prospect. The Alexander Column stands in the center of the square. The column shaft is carved from a single piece of red granite, and together with the angel statue on top, it reaches a total height of nearly 50 m; the shaft alone weighs hundreds of tons. It was erected to commemorate Russia's victory over Napoleon's army and was completed in 1834. Interestingly, the stone column is not fixed to the base but has stood steadily for nearly two centuries solely by its own weight. The angel statue at the top tramples a snake symbolizing the defeated enemy, and the bronze reliefs around the base are engraved with armor and weapons, which are worth walking around to examine closely. This is also the stage for many major historical events in Saint Petersburg. The storming of the Winter Palace during the October Revolution in 1917 took place on the square, and the Saint Petersburg leg of the 2008 Beijing Olympic torch relay also ended here. Today, the square is more like an open urban living room, with flocks of pigeons landing by the column base, and street performers and sightseeing carriages passing by from time to time. To capture the classic shot of the column and the Triumphal Arch in the same frame, stand on the side near the Winter Palace and shoot towards the south. The light is soft in the early morning and there are fewer tourists, making the exterior wall of the Winter Palace and the dark red column shaft look particularly photogenic at this time.Saint Petersburg · 31.2km from Kronshtadt

Nevsky pr.

4.7/5
388 reviews
Nevsky pr. is the main street of Saint Petersburg. It took shape in the city's planning in the early 18th century, with a total length of approx. 4.5 km. It starts from the Admiralty on the banks of the Neva River in the west and ends at the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in the east, from which the street takes its name. The street is roughly divided into two sections by Uprising Square in front of the Moscow Railway Station: the western section is dense with shops, cafes, and historic buildings, making it the area where most people stroll; the eastern section was historically known as "Old Nevsky pr." and has a much quieter atmosphere. The highlights of this street are almost all embedded in the facades on both sides: the curved colonnade of the Kazan Cathedral facing the street is highly recognizable; the House of Books in the Singer House and the Eliseevsky Store, famous for its stained glass decorations, are each a sight to behold; the Anichkov Bridge, which crosses the Fontanka River, stands with bronze statues of horse tamers at its ends; turning from beside the Kazan Cathedral into the Griboyedov Canal, you can also see The Bank Bridge, decorated with gilded winged lions. The Literary Cafe, where Pushkin stopped before his duel, is also located on the street, and Gogol even wrote a short story using its name. Walking while looking up at the building facades is more enjoyable than just shopping. The western section is crowded. If you want a quieter scene, early morning or the eastern section is more suitable. The subway runs underground along the street, so you can turn into a station to take a ride whenever you get tired of walking.Saint Petersburg · 33.9km from Kronshtadt

Summer Garden

99 reviews
Summer Garden is situated on a small island in the center of Saint Petersburg, surrounded by the Neva, Moika, and Fontanka rivers and the Swan Canal. In 1704, Peter the Great ordered the creation of an imperial garden here. The garden is almost as old as the city itself and was initially the Tsar's summer residence. The layout of the French-style formal garden remains to this day: straight avenues intersect, flower beds and hedges are neatly trimmed, and rows of marble statues carved by Venetian sculptors stand along the paths, mostly depicting figures from classical mythology and fables. To protect the weathered originals from erosion, most of the statues displayed in the garden today are replicas, while the originals have been moved to museums for safekeeping. A landmark feature of the garden is the cast-iron fence stretching along the Neva River, with its continuous golden spires and intricate floral decorations, which is considered one of the symbols of Saint Petersburg. A bronze seated statue of the fable writer Krylov stands by the path, surrounded by figures of animals from his fables around the base, which are full of interesting details upon close inspection; the garden also houses Peter the Great's two-story stone Summer Palace, which is now a museum where you can get a glimpse of the living quarters and furnishings from the Tsarist era. Pushkin had his protagonist walk here as a child in "Eugene Onegin," adding a touch of literary atmosphere to this green space. Separated from the Summer Garden by a body of water is the Field of Mars. Mikhailovsky Castle and The State Russian Museum, Mikhailovsky Palace are also within walking distance, making it very convenient to visit them along with surrounding attractions. In spring and summer, the garden is shaded by lush greenery and flower beds are in bloom. The fountains are turned on during the warm season, making it a perfect place for a walk or taking photos; if you are just looking for a quiet corner in the bustling city to sit for a while, this old garden can also offer you a moment of tranquility.Saint Petersburg · 32.2km from Kronshtadt

This masterpiece of art created by the well-known sculptor Fa Erkene is placed on a boulder, the front legs of the horse are in the air, and Peter the Great sits on the mount, his eyes are bright and his eyes are straight ahead. Admiring this statue from any direction, you can strongly feel its artistic charm. This statue was ordered by Empress Catherine to commemorate Peter the Great. There are two lighthouses in the ancient port of Vasily Island. On some special festivals, such as Victory Day, torches are lit here. And every year between May and October, the water column of the flowing musical fountain across the Neva will spray into the sky, reaching a height of 60 meters.Saint Petersburg · 30.6km from Kronshtadt

The majestic thing in Palace Square is the Alexander Column in the center of the square. It is 47.5 meters high, 4 meters in diameter, and weighs 600 tons. Made of solid granite. Without any support, it only stands on its own weight. It was built to commemorate the Great Patriotic War of 1812. Looking up at the huge column, the bronze statue of the angel on the top of the column, and looking back at the Winter Palace, I seem to hear the beating of Russia's heart, and feel the spirit of a huge country, a kind of self-confidence that looks up to the sky and looks up to all directions. This should be a symbol of Russia's strong spirit and momentum in that era.Saint Petersburg · 31.3km from Kronshtadt

On both sides of the square of Vasily Port stand two columns with bow-shaped decorations, 32 meters high, which are lighthouses for ships entering the port. They are called Rastrelli columns. The reason why there are bow decorations on the columns is that in ancient Greece and Rome, people nailed the bows of defeated ships on the columns as a symbol of victory in naval battles. On the granite base of the navigation lighthouse, there are four statues symbolizing the four major rivers in Russia - the Volga River, the Volkhov River, the Dnieper River and the Neva River flowing through St. Petersburg. The entire complex centered on the stock exchange is magnificent and beautiful. During major festivals, the lighthouse will be lit.

At the center of Palace Square stands the Alexander Column, designed and built in 1834, named after Tsar Alexander I, to commemorate Russia's great victory over Napoleon in 1812. This 47.5-meter-high, approximately 600-ton red granite column is the tallest of its kind in the world. Constructed from a single block of granite, it stands unsupported by its own weight on its base. At its top is an angel holding a cross, its feet resting on a serpent, a symbol of victory. Opposite the Winter Palace is the arched government building, formerly the General Staff of the Russian Army. Its center features a double triumphal arch, topped with a Roman chariot, also commemorating the victory over Napoleon.
