Yindu Water Town

Yindu Water Town

4.6/5
72 reviews
Yindu Water Village, formerly known as Shizhaizi, is located in Xinhua Village, Caohai Town, Heqing County, Dali Prefecture. It is composed of seven typical Bai villages. As early as the Tang Dynasty, the craftsmen of Xinhua Village began to engage in the processing and production of gold, silver, copper and other handicrafts, which have been passed down from generation to generation and continue to this day. Today, Yindu Water Village has become a very famous tourist area in Dali Prefecture due to its long-standing handicraft culture and tranquil rural scenery. The integrated Yindu Water Town consists of "Xinhua International Ecological Park", "Shizhaizi Handicraft Exhibition Park", "Three Market Streets of National Arts", "Yunnan Silverware Museum" and "Ancient Theater", with a total area of 16 square kilometers. The Attraction is characterized by Yindu and water town, integrating sightseeing and shopping, and has become a very large ethnic handicraft processing base and tourist commodity distribution center in the southwest region. Entering the gate of the water village, the middle area is the ethnic art Sanshi Street. Sanshi Street is dominated by traditional Bai architecture, and the shops on both sides gather Dining and snacks, ethnic costumes and handicrafts from all over the country, as well as teahouses and bars with different decorations. Visitors wander around, shopping, relaxing, or tasting delicious food, which is a very beautiful landscape of Xinhua Village. When you come to the Silver Capital Water Town, you can't miss the "Handicraft Exhibition Garden". The exhibition garden adopts the traditional Bai dwelling style. The buildings are connected by corridors, with carved beams and painted rafters, which are quite exquisite. There are a large number of handicrafts with rich varieties and exquisite workmanship on display in the garden. Whether it is jewelry or ornaments, they are all carefully crafted and exquisite. If you like any silverware, you can buy it appropriately. If you want to see the silverware made by local craftsmen, you must not miss the "Yunnan Silverware Museum" in the Attraction. It manages and collects more than 2,000 precious folk silverware left over from the Tang and Song dynasties, which are divided into three categories: jewelry, daily necessities and religious instruments. All of them are exquisite. Looking at these exquisite silverware, you can imagine the development process of Shizhaizi's silverware making technology, and feel a lot. After seeing the exquisite handicrafts, you can also take a stroll in the village. Xinhua International Ecological Park is located by the mountains and the water. Inside the park is a unique Bai ethnic courtyard. You can stroll into the courtyard and experience the famous "Bai ethnic group's three-course tea", or go boating on the water, or fish by the lake, or even drink tea and meet friends. The leisurely atmosphere is unforgettable. It usually takes about 2-3 hours to visit Yindu Water Village, and there is no need to stay in the village for food and lodging. Yindu Water Village is close to National Highway 214, but there is currently no shuttle bus to the village, so you can only drive yourself or join a tour group.Heqing · 5.4km from downtown

Mu Fu Mansion

11.4k reviews
Mu Fu Mansion is located at the foot of Lion Mountain in the ancient town of Lijiang. It served as the residence of the Mu family chieftains for centuries since the Ming Dynasty. The architecture retains the central plains style of the Ming era while incorporating Bai and Naxi craftsmanship. When Xu Xiake visited Lijiang, he could only admire the grand complex from outside the gates, leaving behind the praise "The splendor of these palaces rivals that of imperial courts." These eight characters are now gilded on the entrance screen wall. Locals often say "As there is the Forbidden City in the north, so there is Mu Fu Mansion in the south," regarding it as Lijiang's version of the Forbidden City. Visiting Mu Fu Mansion, you first pass through the wooden archway inscribed with "Tian Yu Liu Fang" – these four characters are a homophone for "Go study" in the Naxi language, reflecting the Mu chieftain family's tradition of valuing education – then through the exquisitely carved stone archway bearing the words "Loyalty and righteousness." In the past, locals praised it with the saying, "The Three Pagodas of Dali, the stone archways of Lijiang." Stepping through the vermilion gate, the central axis runs east to west, lined with the assembly hall, Wanjuan Tower (Ten-Thousand-Volume Library), guardian hall, Guangbi Tower, Yuyin Tower, and Sanqing Hall. The assembly hall was where the chieftain conducted political affairs, dignified and imposing. Wanjuan Tower once housed thousands of Dongba scriptures, hundreds of Buddhist sutras, poetry collections of six chieftains, and numerous calligraphy and paintings by renowned scholars, embodying the mansion's cultural heritage. The guardian hall, also called the rear assembly hall, was used for family discussions. Guangbi Tower, the gatehouse of the rear garden, has long been hailed as "the finest in western Yunnan." Yuyin Tower was where imperial edicts were received and banquets with music and dance were held. At the axis's end stands Sanqing Hall, situated high at the foot of Lion Mountain, offering a panoramic view of the entire mansion and the layered rooftops of the ancient town. Over a hundred auxiliary halls, pavilions, street-crossing buildings, and family courtyards flank the axis in staggered elevations, recreating the grandeur of the chieftain's residence. Most structures of Mu Fu Mansion were destroyed in wars during the late Qing Dynasty. Its current layout was reconstructed after fundraising following the 1996 Lijiang earthquake and completed in 1999. TV series like "Mu Fu Feng Yun" and "Qian Wang" were filmed here. After the tour, the Zhongyi Memorial Archway outside the mansion, the "Tian Yu Liu Fang" archway, and the screen wall inscribed with Xu Xiake's praise are all photo-worthy spots.Lijiang · 34.8km from Heqing

Old Town of Lijiang

The Old Town of Lijiang, also known as Dayan Town, is one of the famous towns along the ancient Tea Horse Road. TV dramas like "One Meter of Sunshine" and "Mu Fu Feng Yun" were filmed here. The town features wooden houses with dark-tiled roofs, ancient stone-paved streets, and small bridges over flowing streams winding past homes. Standing on East Street, one can see the snow-capped peak of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain on clear days, with the iconic view of the mountain and the old town framed together. The ancient town is built along the mountain slopes, with streets and alleys following the waterways. Sifang Street, once a trading market on the ancient Tea Horse Road, remains the town's center today, with four main streets—Guangyi Street, Qiyi Street, Wuyi Street, and Xinhua Street—radiating outward and branching into a crisscrossing network of lanes. The Yu River splits into three at Yulong Bridge in the north, forming the East, Middle, and West Rivers, which further divide into nine tributaries and countless water alleys, creating a layout where main streets border rivers and small lanes adjoin canals. Mu Fu, the residence of the Mu chieftain praised by Xu Xiake as "palatial splendor rivaling that of kings," stands at the foot of Lion Mountain beside Guangyi Street. For a panoramic view of the town, climb to Wangulou on Lion Mountain, where layers of dark-tiled rooftops unfold below. The melodies of ancient Naxi music can be heard year-round in the town, while shops displaying Dongba script and handmade silver and copper crafts are scattered throughout the streets, offering glimpses of Naxi craftsmanship at every turn. The large waterwheel at the entrance of the ancient town is an iconic photo spot. The town is filled with shops selling ethnic accessories, tea, silverware, and shawls. Local delicacies like cured pork ribs and chickpea jelly can be found in restaurants, alongside Western options like pizza. Tired visitors can take a break anywhere.Lijiang · 35km from Heqing

Heqing Caohai is a veritable plateau water town, located in Heqing Bazi. Due to the continuous water system of many pools and springs at the foot of the east and west mountains of Bazi and the continuous inflow of water, a natural grass sea wetland with wide waters has been formed in Heqing Bazi. The Caohai Wetland is named because of its shallow water, and in autumn, villagers around the area use canoes to fish for aquatic plants and fertilize them in the sea. The Caohai Sea is divided into the North Sea, the Central Sea, the South China Sea and the East China Sea. The maximum water depth is 2.6 meters, the average water depth is 1.6 meters, the water surface is 2193.2 meters above sea level, and the annual inflow water volume reaches 2.4 million cubic meters. It is a plateau freshwater lake. The Caohai waters are connected to the Yanggong River through small streams and ditches, and Tianchou. In summer, thousands of acres of red lotus bloom, the scenery is beautiful, and the lake is also rich in water chestnut, lotus root and so on. When the lotus flowers are in full bloom, people in Heqingba District go to Caohai to enjoy the scenery of lakes and mountains, forming a traditional folk activity of "playing with the sea". The young men and women of the Bai nationality who come to play in the sea are either rafting in the sea, or hiking around the sea, playing the three strings, singing the love songs of the Bai nationality, and enjoying themselves. Many young men and women of Bai nationality formed a happy marriage at the singing party and became lifelong partners.Heqing · 4.6km from downtown

Lashihai Wetland Park is a highland wetland lake in the Lashi Dam west of Lijiang. The lake surface is as calm as a mirror, reflecting the distant Yulong Snow Mountain on clear days. Reeds sway along the lakeshore, and open grassy beaches are scattered with traditional Naxi villages. Located on the western migration route for migratory birds, tens of thousands of birds arrive here each fall and winter to overwinter. Waterfowl such as gray cranes and bar-headed geese forage and rest between the lake and grassy beaches, making it a famous birdwatching spot near Lijiang. Horseback riding along the ancient tea-horse road is the signature activity at Lashihai Wetland Park. Several Naxi villages by the lake have horse ranches, where grooms lead horses to take you through forests and over slopes along the old post road, or stroll leisurely around the lakeside meadows while listening to their stories of the tea-caravan trade to Tibet in the past. You can also take a boat onto the lake to observe waterfowl up close and admire the snow-capped mountains reflected in the water. For dedicated birdwatching, flocks are particularly active during winter mornings and evenings. It's recommended to bring binoculars, wear dark-colored clothing, remain quiet, and avoid feeding or chasing the birds. Please note that the lakeside horse ranches and cruises are scattered across various villages, with different operating methods and route lengths. Before departure, confirm the route details and safety arrangements with the ranch, choose a properly operated ranch, and ride within your ability.Yulong · 35.4km from Heqing

Heqing, a treasure-trove town, boasts Huanglongtan Park, where the waters are crystal clear. Willow trees sway gracefully along the embankment, their uniquely shaped branches reflected in the water, creating a breathtaking landscape against the distant green mountains and azure sky. The clinking sound of silverware brings prosperity to the area, and exquisite silver sculptures line the streets.

A string of Buddhist beads from Guanyin Bodhisattva fell in Heqing and became 108 springs and pools. Not to mention the famous hot spots, I am more fond of the small dragon pools scattered in the fields and villages. With the sweat beads of the dragon, I traveled to the beautiful dragon pool, the cold dragon pool, the sheep dragon pool, the 🐮bizi dragon pool, the hot spring dragon pool, the Xima dragon pool... From yesterday to today, with the joy of picking up 41 beads, I added a touch of color to today's clouds and wind.

The free guided tours within the scenic area are a major plus, in my opinion. The area primarily depicts the history of the Yunnan Tusi (chieftains) during the Ming Dynasty, making it a great place to experience the culture and take photos.

The night view of Lijiang Old Town is a gentle interplay of lights and flowing water. As night falls, the cobblestone streets are bathed in the warm yellow glow of lanterns, creating a poetic atmosphere. The Jade River shimmers, reflecting the starry sky of the old town. In the streets and alleys, Naxi ancient music and folk songs blend together, and the everyday life of the city merges with the ancient charm of a thousand years ago. From a high vantage point, the myriad lights of homes create a scene resembling a flowing ink painting of Jiangnan, gentle and romantic, captivating visitors with its blend of tranquility and vibrancy, making them linger and reluctant to leave.

Horseback riding along the Ancient Tea Horse Road is definitely worthwhile. The only downside was that I bought shoe covers this time; it was incredibly hot and stuffy, very uncomfortable. Don't blindly follow the shopkeepers' recommendations; follow your own pace. The food wasn't particularly delicious, but it was good value for money. Just make sure you're not hungry. The scenery was beautiful, and there were fruit vendors along the roadside.

Heqing Town is quiet and beautiful, but few tourists go there. Most of them go directly to Lijiang Old Town from Lijiang Airport, so it is easy to overlook this niche place to check in. The distant mountains are indigo, and the air quality is excellent. Staying in a homestay is the best choice.

Jianchuan's tourism resources emphasize both historical culture and natural landscapes: Jianchuan Ancient City: Founded in the Yuan Dynasty, it retains a large number of Ming and Qing Dynasty buildings. Over 90% of the residences are in the Bai ethnic style, featuring the "three courtyards and one screen wall" or "four courtyards and five patios" layout. The ancient building complex on Ximen Street is a national key cultural relics protection unit. Visitors can stroll along the bluestone alleys and experience intangible cultural heritage such as the worship of local deities and Jianchuan wood carving. Shibaoshan Scenic Area: Famous for its Danxia landforms and grotto art, the Shibaoshan Grottoes are hailed as "Southern Treasures," masterpieces of carving from the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms periods. Every year from February to August in the lunar calendar, the Shibaoshan Song Festival is held here, where visitors can listen to Bai folk songs and experience traditional festivals. Shaxi Ancient Town: A well-preserved market town on the Ancient Tea Horse Road, with attractions such as Sideng Street, the Sifang Street Ancient Stage, and Yujin Bridge exuding a rustic charm. We recommend taking a stroll across Yujin Bridge at dusk to enjoy a panoramic sunset. Qianshi Mountain: Named for its more than 3,000 stone lion sculptures, visitors can climb the mountain to admire the uniquely shaped lions and experience the tranquil mountain forest praised by Xu Xiake. Jian Lake: A highland wetland, it is a habitat for black-necked cranes in winter. Cycling around the lake or camping offers a chance to enjoy natural peace and quiet.

Sifang Street is located in the center of Lijiang Old Town. It is well connected with traffic and surrounded by quiet alleys. It is said that it was built by Mu Tusi in the Ming Dynasty according to the shape of his seal. It is the most important hub on the Ancient Tea Horse Road. Since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, merchants from all over the world have gathered here, and the cultures of various ethnic groups have intersected and thrived here. It is the center of economic and cultural exchanges in Lijiang. Sifang Street is famous for its unique street scene of colorful stone paving, clear water washing the street, market in the middle of the day and washing the market at dusk.
