Furong Town

Originally named "Wang Village," Furong Town is an ancient town with a history of over two thousand years. In 1986, the film *Hibiscus Town*, directed by Xie Jin and starring Liu Xiaoqing and Jiang Wen, was shot on location here, bringing the ancient town widespread fame, and in 2007 it was officially renamed. The center of the ancient town is built atop a massive rock formation, with a waterfall dropping dozens of meters flowing through the town. Tujia stilted houses are built right next to the waterfall, earning it the name "the thousand-year-old town hanging on a waterfall." Strolling along the five-li-old street paved with bluestone slabs, you can see many local residences on both sides constructed from wooden planks, many of which have darkened with age, bearing clear traces of the passage of time. The Xizhou Bronze Pillar in the town is a precious historical witness, inscribed with a treaty of truce and alliance between the King of Chu and local chieftains during the Five Dynasties period, recording a chapter of Tujia history. The Tusi King's Palace next to the waterfall served as a summer retreat for successive generations of Tusi kings, and the area nearby is also a great spot to overlook the entire town, taking in the stilted houses, the waterfall, and the Youshui River below all at once. After nightfall, the ancient town lights up, the waterfall is illuminated with colored lights, and the night scenery is gorgeous and enchanting. Mi doufu (rice tofu), made famous by a film, is now the town's signature snack, with shops bearing "mi doufu" signs everywhere, and the one where the film was shot being especially popular. The town also offers specialty goods such as Tujia brocade, bamboo tube wine, and Guzhang Maojian tea, which you can keep as travel souvenirs.

Furong Town Waterfall is hidden in Furong Town, located in theWuling Mountains of Western Hunan. A stream flows through the town, and upon reaching the end of the town, it cascades down from a cliff in two tiers, with a drop of approx. 60 m and a width of approx. 40 m, plunging directly into the Youshui River below the cliff. The ancient town is known as the "millennium-old town hanging on a waterfall" because of this waterfall—the waterfall roars right beside the eaves of the old street, and this waterfall view that integrates with the entire town is very unique. On the cliffs on both sides of the waterfall, Tujia stilt houses hang in layers beside the waterfall; walking along the Wuli Slate Street that winds with the mountain to the edge of the cliff, you can look down at the entire water curtain. Descending to the Wangcun Old Wharf by the Youshui River at the foot of the cliff, you can look up at the scene of the waterfall and the stilt houses in the same frame. Shen Congwen once praised the exquisite beauty of the mountains, waters, trees, and stones at Wangcun Wharf. The waterfall has different highlights throughout the four seasons: during the high-water season, the water volume is abundant and the momentum is grand, and you can hear the roar from far away; during the normal water season, it looks like a white silk hanging from the cliff, making the ancient town appear even quieter. After nightfall, the lights turn on, and the waterfall and the buildings on the cliff take on a different silhouette. The night view of the grand waterfall attracts many tourists to stay until the evening.

Furong Town not only has beautiful scenery and rich ethnic customs, but also has cultural landscapes such as the "Xizhou Copper Pillar", a national key protected cultural relic that records the political and military history of the Tujia people, and the location shooting site of the movie "Furong Town". In 2008, it was rated as a national historical and cultural town by the Ministry of Construction. The Xizhou Copper Pillar is now preserved in the Folk Customs and Scenery Museum of Furong Town. In 940 AD, King Ma Xifan of Chu and Peng Shichou, the governor of Xizhou, made peace after years of war, concluded an alliance, divided the border and smelted, and cast a 5,000-jin copper pillar as a witness. According to historical records: "In the fourth year of Tianfu in the Later Jin Dynasty (939 AD), Xizhou Governor Peng Shichou fought against Ma Xifan, the King of Chu who occupied Hunan at that time. After Peng Shichou was defeated, he negotiated peace with Ma Xifan in the fifth year of Tianfu in the Later Jin Dynasty (940 AD). The course of the war and the terms of the peace were engraved on a bronze pillar. The bronze pillar weighs five thousand catties, is 12 feet high, has six hearts buried in the ground, is octagonal in shape, hollow in the middle, and filled with huge coins. The end of the pillar is covered with a bronze top, inscribed with the oath The pillar was carved with the shape of a stone and erected in Huixi. When it was re-erected in the second year of Tianxi in the Song Dynasty (1018 AD), some local official titles were engraved on it. In the middle of the Qing Dynasty, the copper top of the pillar was stolen and sank into the river. The copper coins inside the pillar were also used up by people to stick them with candy. In the eleventh year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty (1885 AD), Zhang Zengyang, the prefect of Yongshun Prefecture, built a pavilion for protection. The copper pillar is pure and smooth; the eight sides are engraved with Yan and Liu style characters, which are still as clear as before despite thousands of years of wind and rain, frost and snow. The Xizhou Copper Pillar is an important document for studying the ancient history of the Tujia people. The Tujia people regard the copper pillar as a sacred object.

Shiban Street is located in Furong Town, Yongshun County, Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hunan Province. It is an ancient street with profound historical heritage. The street is about five miles long and is named after the bluestone slabs it is paved with. It is well preserved to this day. Traditional plank-door shops and Tujia stilt houses are lined up on both sides, showing a strong ethnic style. The winding street leads to the ferry pier on the bank of Youshui River. Along the way, you can enjoy natural landscapes such as Wangcun Waterfall and Feishuizhai built on the cliff.   Furong Town has a long history of more than 2,300 years. As the main road of the ancient town, Shiban Street has witnessed its evolution from an ancient commercial town to a modern tourist destination. The buildings on both sides of the street are mostly in the style of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and the bluestone pavement looks more quaint after years of baptism. There are also cultural venues such as the Xiangxi Tusi Museum and the Folk Customs Scenery Museum on both sides of Shiban Street, showing the rich Tujia culture and history. When night falls, the red lanterns on both sides of the street are lit up, reflecting on the bluestone slabs, creating a warm and peaceful atmosphere. Visitors can stroll here to feel the charm of the ancient town at night and experience a completely different style from that during the day.

We stayed in Fenghuang for 3 days. There were few B&Bs in the past, but I feel that B&Bs are more atmospheric in this kind of ancient city. "Zhuyuan" did not disappoint us. If the rating is 5 points, I think it can be 5++ Location: Central location of the ancient city, 3 minutes away from the river, but not on the river, so it is quiet in the hustle and bustle, especially perfect B&B: spacious and bright, very clean Boss: The most important thing to evaluate, serious, responsible, think about what we think, exquisite breakfast, no matter how late we come back tomorrow night, he will wait for us to give us fruit yogurt, and will pick us up on the roadside to help us with our luggage. He is the best boss I have ever met. We left early on the last day, and he helped us pack breakfast

Furong Town Waterfall is undoubtedly the centerpiece of Furong Town's scenery. Hanging by the You River, it offers a unique charm whether viewed from afar or up close, by day or at night, from atop a vantage point, or even by foot. It was also the filming location for the tale "Journey to the West," though back then, there weren't as many houses built near the falls. Commercialization, then, has its pros and cons, depending on how local authorities guide and manage it.

Along the Youshui River, the canyon scenery is treacherous and beautiful. In clear weather, the river water is like a mirror. You can take a cruise on the Youshui River to enjoy the limestone mountain landscape and the marks left by the wind and water of nature on the steep stone walls. Youshui Canyon is known for its beautiful water, strange mountains, secluded caves, and green forests. The cliffs along the river are towering and the trees are lush. It is like being in a fairyland and is known as the "Youshui Gallery".

Came here on June 27, 2014. Only after I came here did I know that there is a first batch of national key cultural relics protection units in Furong Town - Xizhou Copper Pillar. This copper pillar is a historical relic of the peace talks between Xizhou Governor Peng Shichou and Chu King Ma Xifan during the Five Dynasties. This war is recorded in detail in "Zizhi Tongjian", and the details of the peace talks of setting up the copper pillar are recorded in "Old Five Dynasties History" and "New Five Dynasties History". According to historical records, the Xizhou Copper Pillar was set up in the fifth year of Tianfu in the Later Jin Dynasty (940) and re-erected in the second year of Tianxi in the Northern Song Dynasty (1018). The existing copper pillar should be the original one re-erected in the Song Dynasty. Except for the broken top, it is basically well preserved, especially the inscription on it is clearly legible, which records the course of the war and the content of the oath treaty in detail. It is an important material evidence in the history of ethnic relations in ancient my country, and it deserves to be listed in the first batch of cultural relics protection units. The Xizhou Copper Pillar has been moved several times in history and is now preserved in the Xizhou Folk Customs Museum at No. 15, Hepan Street Community, Furong Town. Walking along the stone street into the ancient town, you can see the place with the "Xizhou Copper Pillar" hanging on the door lintel after a few steps. It is easy to find. In addition, there is a square called "Boundary Monument Copper Pillar Garden" near Tuwang Bridge, which reproduces the scene of the oath of Peng Shichou and Ma Xifan, which is also worth a look.

Hangwu Miao Village is a Miao language, which means "beautiful Miao village beside the canyon stream" in Chinese. This Miao village is located on the way from Guzhang County to Jishou. It takes eight minutes by car from Guzhang County and three minutes from Jishou through Niutou Mountain Tunnel. The tour time is about 1.5-2 hours. The whole village has 292 households and a total of 1,204 people, preserving the unique wooden structure stilt house style of the ethnic minorities in Wuling Mountain. Guzhang is a place of outstanding people and beautiful scenery, and is known as the "hometown of song and dance" and the "hometown of weightlifting". We traveled with a group to visit poverty alleviation and shopping attractions. We felt that it was a waste of time to sign up for a group tour to visit one more attraction later. It was better to take a car to Furong Town for a free trip.

Zuolong Gorge, located in Guzhang County, Xiangxi, stretches for 6.5 kilometers. Here, sheer cliffs rise one after another, streams and waterfalls cascade down, and the scenery is a blend of wonder, danger, seclusion, and vastness. Visitors can appreciate the magical gorge landscape, typical zonal vegetation, and the rustic Tujia mountain villages.

Wuli Stone Street is the stone street on the old street of Furong Town. It has a section of stone road and a section of stairs. There are many shops on both sides of the street, selling all kinds of things. It is similar to many ancient towns. There are not many tourists, and not many people buy things, they just look. Occasionally, a tour guide lady or a young man holding flags of different colors will lead a travel group through the stone road of the old street.
