No. 6 of Cool Water Escapes in South Africa

Wilderness Beach

Wilderness Beach is an open beach facing the Indian Ocean. Its west end connects to the mouth of the Caimans River, and it extends east to the area around the Tou River mouth, stretching for several kilometers. Backed by dunes covered in scrub and shea trees, with green hills visible in the distance, the overall view is wide and peaceful. The pale white sand is broad and gently sloping, and dolphins can often be seen along the shore. From about May to November each year, southern right whales and humpback whales migrate along the coast, and you may spot whales from the beach or from higher points on the shore. The main surf zone has waves year-round and is suitable for surfing. The beach is also good for walking, sunbathing, and swimming. On clear days you can see paragliders launch from the cliff top and glide along the coast toward the beach. The Tou River lagoon behind the dunes has relatively calm water, suitable for swimming and other water activities. A wooden boardwalk to the beach crosses the dunes, making access easier while reducing impact on dune vegetation.

Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex

Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex consists of three buildings: the Maritime Hall, the Shell Museum and Aquarium, and the Granary. Located right by the bay, the grounds are planted with native plants, blending coastal scenery with historical exhibits. The Maritime Hall is the core exhibition space; the building was originally a grain mill built in 1901 and was later converted into a museum. A full-scale replica of a caravel is displayed in the center of the hall and serves as the complex's iconic exhibit. The hall uses exhibits and architectural details to tell the history of Portuguese, Dutch, and United Kingdom navigators opening up maritime routes, while the blue Adamastor tiles and stained glass windows inside add a unique artistic atmosphere to the space. The Shell Museum and Aquarium are housed in the same building, displaying a large collection of shells and mollusk specimens. The aquariums also showcase live mollusks and small marine life, making it one of the most prominent exhibitions of its kind in Africa. Scattered outdoors throughout the complex are large historical artifacts such as old anchors, cannons, and Portuguese cross stones.
