Supporting wildlife sanctuaries can be a bit of a guessing game in South Africa. Some reserves claim to be sanctuaries but allow touching and petting and feeding or purchase animals who should remain in the wild. Monkeyland is a true sanctuary. It is part of SASSA - a local sanctuaries alliance and endorsed by WildChoices (WildChoices is a non-profit company dedicated to improving the state of the captive wildlife tourism industry). Monkeyland provides a home for primates which were rescued from zoos, labs, circuses or were unwanted pets. Monkeyland is a world leading refuge and the lemurs, monkeys and apes here roam freely. There are awesome opportunities to learn about primate behaviour from the guides, take photos or videos or just watch the animals grooming, feeding and swinging. Our kids are 5 and 8 and they loved every minute of this tour. Warning - please listen carefully to the guides, they advise visitors to put away sunshades and if you ignore them your property is likely to get pinched by some of the clever animals. We loved seeing the White Handed Gibbons and the lanky Black Spider Monkey. Please consider the purchase of a square metre of the Forest on behalf of the monkeys. The goal is that they will eventually own their own home!

My boyfriend and I had such an incredible experience. It was a great activity. Our guide Angelo explained everything very precisely and gave us a great briefing on everything. In addition, he was very caring and took good care of us. If you stick to his statements nothing can happen to you.

An amazing day out. I went with my family to watch our son do the jump while we walk the skywalk. The staff were so friendly, encouraging and clearly very well trained. When I did the skywalk I was then having regrets that I didn’t do the zip line and told the staff. They were on it and said it was no problem so walked me back along the skywalk and I got harnessed up and did the zip line which was really fun. I also got to have a go at the hang out area where you can safely peer over the edge providing great views. I then had a moment when I thought I’m here now , harnessed up so maybe do the jump too? I was strongly encouraged by my family and staff and the next thing I knew I was doing the jump. I’m a 56 year old woman- was not the oldest by far to do the jump. Was it worth it? Without doubt!The best thrill ever. I faced my fears. Huge big up to the staff. They made the day so much better with their time, encouragement, positive attitude and smiles. Thanks for an amazing day!

We made sure you to get there earlier as we did with all our activities in Plett. They way we get a smaller group on the tours. We moved to NZ from SA many years ago and brought our daughter to SA for the first time to experience the African bush. This tour allowed her to get up close to the animals and having the tour geared for kids was very informative plus she got a certificate she can take home and show her friends in NZ.

We very much enjoyed our day at Tenikwa. Our guide was knowledgeable and passionate and we had lots of time to get up close with the animals and to watch them and learn about them. I was particularly pleased to see that the animals have it very good there with enough space and natural enclosures.


