OUTSTANDING IN EVERY WAY!
This one-hour cruise out of Otago Harbour and into the Pacific Roaring 40s is worth every dollar and more. I first went in May 25 and enjoyed the experience so much that I just had to squeeze in another trip before leaving New Zealand.
The Skipper Nigel was extremely friendly and very knowledgeable about the area, birdlife and Sealife that we observed on both occasions. His warm manner and excellent commentary as he pointed out the various birds swooping around us certainly helped to ensure that both experiences were unforgettable!
On the first trip, we were fortunate enough to spot the Northern Royal Albatross, some of which nest on the Otago headland. We also saw the rarer Southern Royal, White-Crowned, and were treated to a special visit from a Buller's Albatross that landed at the stern of our vessel.
During the second trip, although the White Crowned and Southern Royal were absent, the inclusion of Giant and Cape Petrels, plus outstanding views of Fur Seals, added to the value of the trip. You will of course see much more than Petrels and Albatross as you will be surrounded by Shags, Red Billed Gulls and White Fronted Terns to name just a few.
If you forget to take your binoculars, the crew will kindly provide a pair. Whether you want to see the wildlife, the coast or just enjoy a short trip with the friendly, knowledgeable crew, this is an OUTSTANDING trip that represents great value and should not be missed!
Thank you to everyone at Monarch for making this trip so very special.

What an absolutely beautiful home. It was like stepping back in time and seeing how a wealthy family lived back in the day. Everything was beautifully maintained and presented.
What wonderful history to be able to share with future generations.

You can visit without a guided tour of 'the camp', though I strongly suggest that you pay a bit extra for 90 minutes with Roger. He was extremely knowledgable and very affable; he had made research-informed stories to tell, and wove a detailed narrative that kept us thoroughly engaged. We learned so much about the house, its history, the families that resided there, and the local area.
Indeed, we're pleased that the castle was our first stop of our visit to Dunedin; it helped to frame our understanding of the city, some of the other historical places we visited, and William Larnach's advocacy for the women's vote in New Zealand. Thank you, Roger!
The house is beautiful. While not all furniture is original to the property (understandably so, having come to understand that many pieces were sold after a Larnach family argument and, since that time, efforts have been made to find original pieces from the home), the intricate wood panelling, plastering, the incredible staircase, and many other aspects are standout features from Larnach's time there.
We also enjoyed a stroll through the gardens (which I am sure are even more resplendent in Spring and Summer), as well as a stop in the Ballroom café for a cosy drink next to the fire.
In total, we spent $147.30 for the guided tour (2 adults x $73.65), access to the castle and gardens. While this is spendy, we appreciate that restoration of the castle itself is also quite spendy and, therefore, we willing to pay such a fee.
Toured in a small van to private farm on Otago Peninsula. Our guide Paula was friendly and kind and knows everything about penguins! We visited the fur seal colony and saw sea lions on the beach. Also lots of sheep and lambs, and Paula pointed out the native birds. The landscape is stunningly beautiful. We had a great time.
