With the JR Pass, sightseeing in Kitakyushu is very convenient. You can freely switch between unreserved and reserved seats, and you can also transfer to the Shinkansen. It's great value for money.

Arriving in Fukuoka, we still had time to grab a bite before catching the express bus to Kurokawa Onsen. The flight wasn't delayed, and the first leg of our trip went smoothly.

Overall, it's optional; all eight "hell" destinations are pretty much the same, so just look at a few. If you're going to visit all of them, then you can buy a voucher. I only looked at three. There's really no need to buy one, plus the bus schedules are unpredictable, and one leg of the journey involved taking another bus, so the voucher couldn't be used. It was still cash payment, but the card collection process was very convenient.
