This is a long day—10 hours end to end—but absolutely worth every minute (and the 2-hour drive each way). Just be prepared: the bus ride feels very “school bus style,” bumpier than expected, so buckle up and settle in for the adventure.
Our guide, Lucas, was fantastic—so knowledgeable about Mt. Rainier and its history. He took us to six breathtaking scenic stops, including Reflection Lake and the bridge across the Nisqually River. The views of the mountain along the way were nothing short of stunning.
At Paradise, you get 2.5 hours of free time to hike at your own pace. We chose the mild Nisqually Trail with paved walkways, and honestly, the views were like stepping into a painting. My 74-year-old mom enjoyed most of it easily, with the exception of one waterfall that required steep, unpaved steps—challenging even with hiking shoes. Still, she had a wonderful time and never felt left out.
One special highlight? Lucas surprised us with wild huckleberries at Tipsoo Lake—and later stopped at a huckleberry ice cream shop on the way back to Seattle. A perfect sweet ending to the day!
We paid around $800 for a family of four (including tips), and for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, it was absolutely worth it. If you only have one day to see Mt. Rainier, this is the tour to take—you’ll get the very best of it. Even after just returning from an Alaska cruise with jaw-dropping scenery, I’m so glad we extended our Seattle stay for two more nights to see Mt. Rainier.★

Basically, you can take a quick look at the streets of Seattle. If you need to have a deeper look, you may not have enough time because the intervals are long and there are no cars after 4:00 pm.
