You'll walk along ancient Dere Street, which connected the supply ports of southern England to modern Scotland. Continuing south, we stop at picturesque Carter Bar, on the edge of the Cheviot Hills. This border point between Scotland and England lies along an ancient Roman road and has been the boundary between the two countries for the past 700 years. Next, we’ll head to Hadrian’s Wall. We’ll follow the road along the south side of the wall, stopping at Steel Rigg. You’ll have time to walk alongside the wall and experience the solitude that the Roman infantry felt as they defended their empire.<img src="https://ak-d.tripcdn.com/images/0353v12000fn57m6v4F84_Z_1000_0.jpg?proc=resize/m_z,w_1000;crop/m_c,w_1000,h_1000,x_0,y_0,DD72">Next, we continue along the Great Wall, where your guide will recommend places to visit. Next up is an optional activity, but one we think you’ll enjoy. Explore the archaeological site of Vindolanda, where you can step into the life of this auxiliary Roman fortress. During the years of excavation, many incredible objects have been found, from shoes to jewelry, from bones to pottery. With our heads full of history, we head north through the Galloway Hills back to Edinburgh. *Vindolanda visit is optional.
