Mount Wellington

4.4/5
131 reviews
Mount Wellington, at an elevation of approx. 1,271 m, is a high mountain towering behind the city of Hobart. On clear days, it is almost always visible when looking west from the city. Hobart is nestled between the mountains and the water. Standing on the mountain, you can overlook the entire city, the River Derwent, and the surrounding bays, with views extending to the hills and wilderness of southern Tasmania. The road up the mountain features multiple lookouts at various altitudes where you can stop and take in the views. At the summit, there is an enclosed, windproof observation shelter, which is the primary spot for panoramic views of Hobart. Beyond sightseeing, this is also a popular destination for outdoor activities around Hobart. On the eastern hillside, there are columnar rock formations known as the "Organ Pipes," rising over 100 m. Multiple hiking trails wind around them, ranging from easy forest paths to long-distance loops that require some physical stamina, and mountain biking enthusiasts also frequently come here to challenge themselves.Wellington Park · 21.2km from Brighton

Salamanca Pl

Salamanca Pl is located on the waterfront of Hobart, the capital of Tasmania, backed by a gentle slope and facing the River Derwent. The row of three- to four-story sandstone warehouses along the street, built in the 1830s and 1840s, used stone mostly quarried from behind the square. They once served the port's whaling and shipping trade, but today they have mostly been converted into galleries, craft shops, cafes, and bars, making them one of the best-preserved colonial-era building complexes in Australia. The square is named after the 1812 Battle of Salamanca, a connection that adds a touch of history to the district. Every Saturday, it transforms into a lively open-air market: hundreds of stalls line the street, with handicrafts like glassware, woodwork, pottery, leather goods, and original clothing intertwined with flowers, produce, books, and street performances, resembling a city-wide fair that both locals and tourists love to visit. If you want to hunt for niche handicrafts or soak up the local atmosphere, consider setting aside a Saturday in your itinerary for this place. Arrive early in the morning for a more relaxed stroll and a better chance to chat with the stall owners. Visiting on weekdays is much quieter, perfect for browsing galleries at a leisurely pace or sitting in a cafe to watch the street scene. Looking north from the square, you can also see the silhouette of Mount Wellington in the distance. Climb the Kelly Steps on the west side, and within a few minutes, you can enter the old streets and alleys of Battery Point, connecting the colonial-era streetscapes of this area into a walking route.Hobart · 21.8km from Brighton

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery is housed in Hobart's old building, the Food Supply Station (built in 1808). The museum mainly displays related materials of the Tasmanian natives who disappeared due to British colonization, as well as the culture of the early colonial era. A highlight of the pavilion is the extinct Tasmanian tiger taxidermy. The Tasmanian tiger, also known as the thylacine, has black stripes and is a marsupial like the kangaroo. The pavilion adopts a collage-style architectural style with repeated additions, which is very special. The colonial building prototype was completed in 1863, with several additions over the years. The entrance to the museum was completed in 1987 and is part of the overall building.Hobart · 21.3km from Brighton

The Tasman Peninsula is located in the southeast of Hobart. Port Arthur is the main attraction. The island's coastline, beaches and bushwalks bring beautiful natural scenery. Enter the peninsula from the north through the Arthur highway, first reach the Eagle's Neck Gorge, turn east to Pirates BayDr, and arrive at the lookout with a view of the coastline. There are also sea erosion landforms such as checkerboard sidewalks, blowholes, Tasman Arches, and waterfall bays around Eagle Neck Gorge. Continue south to Tasman National Park, which occupies a large area of the peninsula, and you can choose one of several bush walks to hike. If you want to see animals, you can go to the Tasmanian Devil Conservation Park. If you want to see cultural attractions, you can go to the historical sites of coal mines, the prison sites of Eagle Neck Gorge, Cunha, Primedna, and Saltwater River. The terminus of Arthur Expressway is Port Arthur. From 1830 to 1877, a large number of prisoners who came to serve here made the gloomy atmosphere gather here, and the beautiful stone buildings, Gothic buildings and parks can hardly conceal the bitter history of the past. .Koonya · 61.9km from Brighton

Bruny Island is located off the southeast coast of Tasmania, separated from the main island of Tasmania by the D'Entrecasteaux Channel, and is near Hobart. The island is a mix of pastures and eucalyptus forests, making it a favorite island getaway for locals. The island consists of North and South Bruny, connected by a narrow sandy isthmus known as The Neck. Climb the wooden boardwalk lookout here to take in the beaches on both sides and the open sea, and in the evening, you may have the chance to see little penguins returning to their nests in groups. The island's southeast coastline is part of South Bruny National Park. Adventure Bay and Cloudy Bay on the seaward side feature long, white sandy beaches, perfect for swimming, walking, and fishing. You may even have the chance to encounter rare white wallabies around Adventure Bay. The dolerite sea cliffs within the national park tower above the sea and are among the highest coastal cliffs in Australia. Take a boat cruise along the coastline to weave through cliffs and reefs, and observe wildlife like seals up close; the 19th-century Cape Bruny Lighthouse stands on the cliff top at the southern end of the island and is a classic spot for overlooking the Southern Ocean. In addition, the island is famous for local specialties such as oysters, cheese, honey, and wine. Many tourists visit specifically to taste these, incorporating both natural scenery and culinary experiences into their itinerary.South Bruny · 77.2km from Brighton

Cataract Gorge Reserve

37 reviews
Cataract Gorge Reserve is a natural gorge adjacent to the city center of Launceston. The South Esk River flows through the valley, and steep cliffs enclose a pool of emerald water, preserving a rare touch of wilderness on the edge of the city. From Kings Bridge, follow the cliffside trail along the north bank into the gorge, and you will soon reach the open First Basin. Here, you will find an outdoor swimming pool and large lawns by the water, making it a popular spot for locals and tourists to swim and picnic. The Alexandra Suspension Bridge, which spans the basin, was built in 1904 and, along with the suspended chairlift, is an iconic feature of the gorge. Taking the chairlift allows you to overlook the entire pool and the surrounding cliffs from above. On the cliff top on the opposite bank lies a Victorian-style garden, where ferns and exotic plants are layered, and free-roaming blue peacocks stroll leisurely across the lawns. Around dusk, you may even encounter wildlife such as wallabies. Continue along the trail deeper into the gorge to reach the Second Basin and the old Duck Reach Power Station. This hydroelectric plant, built in the late 19th century, once lit the streetlights of Launceston and has now been converted into a venue showcasing the history of early hydroelectric power, making it a worthwhile stop for visitors interested in industrial heritage.Australia · West Launceston

Wineglass Bay

5.1
4.7/5
119 reviews
Wineglass Bay is located on the Freycinet Peninsula on the east coast of Tasmania, Australia, and is the signature bay of Freycinet National Park. It is surrounded by the jagged pink granite peaks of the Hazards, and its white sandy beach outlines a near-perfect arc that meets the clear, blue-green water, with an overall silhouette resembling a wine glass filled with fine wine. There are various theories about the origin of its name: one says it is because of its shape, and another relates it to the history of whaling in the early days. This bay is hidden behind a ridge and cannot be seen from the road. To catch a glimpse of it, you need to put in some effort: the standard route is to follow the trail over the saddle of the Hazards to the lookout, which takes about an hour for the round trip. The crescent-shaped white beach carves a clean arc on the azure sea and is a frequent subject in photos of Tasmania. If you want to actually step onto the beach, you can continue down from the lookout to the bottom of the bay, then loop around via the isthmus to Hazards Beach, forming a circuit that takes about half a day. If you are energetic and the weather is dry, you can also challenge Mount Amos to get a high-altitude view of the entire bay from the steep granite summit; however, it is not recommended to climb when it is raining as the rock surface is slippery. The town of Coles Bay near the park entrance and the nearby Swansea are common places to stay. Departing from Coles Bay by cruise or kayak, you can also appreciate this bay from a different angle on the sea, where dolphins are often spotted along the way, and sometimes whales.Australia · Freycinet

Traveling to Australia, this stop came to Hobart, the capital of Tasmania. Wandering around the city center, I came to this museum, which is located opposite the City Hall, near the pier. There is a parking lot at the door, which is very convenient, but it is charged. The museum is free to visit. When you enter, there are some open-air seats with artistic shapes on the right, where you can take a break. The locker area is in the front left. All guests who come to visit need to put their belongings in the locker. You need to prepare a 2-dollar Australian dollar coin. Open any empty cabinet. There is a small slot in the cabinet door where you can put coins. You can only put coins that are exactly the size of 2 yuan. Then close the cabinet door and remove the key. When you need to move something, insert the key, turn the door open, and the coin will automatically spit out for you. This museum has several sections, including the history and culture museum of the aboriginals, the specimen museum, the exquisite collection museum, the art gallery, the cafe, the lounge and other parts. Due to time constraints, I only visited the specimen museum and learned about the animals that are unique to Australia and even Tasmania. Of course, these are specimens, for example: the now extinct Tasmanian tiger, the Tasmanian tiger, the Tasmanian devil, kangaroos of various sizes, flying birds, etc. The decoration of the specimen museum is very simple, or it is deliberately made to be a little primitive, it feels like returning to the primitive society. The lighting in the lounge is dim, but it has that kind of British style decoration. There are clear instructions along the way, and you can look at the signs to find your favorite museum to visit.

It couldn't be more pleasant to take a boat around the island on a group day tour! The blue sky and blue sea, and you can see wombats. The local one-day tour only has English. We are the only foreigners. The others are all local Australian aunties and uncles. The sea breeze is still quite cold when the boat starts, but it's worth it for the beautiful scenery. Some local aunties did a lot of homework and introduced us to the rock types and formation ages along the coast.

Hobart is very lucky - to have an accessible harbour side which is part of the city. On lazy summer evenings this is where people jog, stroll, sit and have a beer, fine cider or wine overlooking a working trawler port ... in winter to marvel at morning sunrises spraying unbelievable colour and crispness in the clear morning air.

Bruny Island is a very beautiful island in Tasmania. It has not undergone any commercial development, so it has retained the most original island scenery. The island has shallow white sand beaches and beautiful lake landscapes. It is very charming and is definitely a holiday resort that is worth a visit.
