Set between the sea and the mountains, Grand Mercure Wakayama Minabe Resort & Spa is a tranquil hotel and resort in Wakayama Minabe where you can relax and recharge. Explore the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route with its cultural and religious sites, which ancient people believed could help you feel revived. The nearby mountains are covered in plum trees, which blossom in the spring, while the coastline is unspoiled, with rugged inlets and sandy beaches with clear blue seas.

"The rooms are spacious, but the hotel is quite old, so the facilities are outdated. However, because there are indoor and outdoor hot springs, many locals stay there on weekends, and the lobby bar offers complimentary snacks and drinks, making it good value overall. However, the hotel's location is remote, and there aren't many restaurants nearby, making it very inconvenient if you're not traveling by car."

"The hotel environment is clean and beautiful, and the service is very attentive. The breakfast buffet is abundant. We chose a Japanese-style (tatami) room, which was spacious and tidy. There's a large public onsen on the top floor, and private onsen baths are also available for reservation (3500 JPY per session). The swimming pool wasn't open, so we missed out on that. The location is very convenient, right next to Shirahama Beach. The only minor drawback is that the hotel is located on a hill, so walking up the steep slope back to the hotel every day was a bit of a challenge for our cardio and stamina, but we just considered it a workout, which was fine. If we come to Shirahama again, we'll definitely choose this place."

"The room was very spacious and had no strange smells. The hotel staff even helped move our stored luggage into the room and provided complimentary snacks and water, which was a very thoughtful touch! The TV showed the occupancy of various public areas, which was super considerate. The hot springs were also very comfortable, with good ambiance and cleanliness. After a dip, they offered popsicles, which was a nice treat. There were two large bookshelves nearby where you could pick out your favorite manga to read, and right outside was the massage chair area – absolutely perfect! In the evening, they offered free late-night noodles that were quite tasty, and there was a self-service drink bar. The breakfast buffet had a wide variety of choices, and I even got to try local specialty sushi, which was a unique experience. There was an electronic scale at the stairwell for weighing luggage, which was very convenient. I'd love to visit again if I get the chance!"

"The location is relatively biased, it is very convenient to drive in and out and there is a parking lot for self-driving tours. The room is also wide and open, and the bathroom is also big! The room has a nostalgic atmosphere, although it is still ok for some days. The most heartwarming thing is that there is a large massage chair in the room to relieve fatigue and there is a hot spring bathtub on the terrace of the room to enjoy the very privacy hot spring bath and the hotel also has a hot spring bath for guests to enjoy! The hotel waiter is very good 👍 so feel at home 😄"

Buffet breakfasts are available daily from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM for a fee. Make yourself at home in one of the 90 air-conditioned guestrooms. "This hotel served as a perfect stopover while hiking the Kumano Kodo. It's less than a 10-minute taxi ride from Kumano Hongu Taisha. This was my second stay, and when I asked, the hotel mentioned a renovation in November 2025, but it sounds like it will only be a partial refurbishment! The hot springs are very comfortable, with both indoor and outdoor baths. The outdoor bath is mixed-gender, and they provide special robes you can wear out there. I booked the half-board option (dinner and breakfast), but the food was quite ordinary with limited choices. However, since there are no convenience stores nearby, eating at the hotel was the only option. The hot spring river, just a 5-minute walk away, now has a public hot spring pool. Many people were enjoying it early in the morning, and kids were also digging their own small pools in the river. Waking up to the steam rising from the river was just wonderful."

"The view is stunning, but taking the bus to Oura Station means you have to drag your suitcases up a bit, or catch the 6:00 PM shuttle bus from Shirahama Station. It's worth checking the shuttle bus schedule beforehand; the last one seems to be around 5:00 PM. The bathroom facilities are a bit dated, but the other services are good. With fewer Chinese tourists, it's mostly Japanese families with children. The indoor pool is a bit small, mostly occupied by the children. The breakfast was okay and filling, a typical hotel buffet, but they do offer mentaiko and tuna. On the way back, the hotel booked a taxi to the airport, which took 10 minutes. It's a bit far from Shirarahama, Senjojiki, and Sandanbeki, so it's best to get a timetable and have change ready if you're taking the bus."

I've stayed at this hotel about once before It is a very special castle style design and the lobby is very gorgeous. Don’t believe it is just a 4-star hotel. I highly recommend this hotel. The hot springs are all designed. The breakfast and dinner buffets have a lot of variety and the taste is generally good. This time I will visit again and we will prepare welcome refreshments.
