Excellent. Done in the traditional hotel style but with very modern in-room amenities. Bathroom is clean and private, with nice shower including good quality—free flow—shampoo and bodywash, clean toilet and a proper door (no glass bathrooms here!). It’s so hard to find a hotel room like this these days. Most importantly, all the staff were totally amazing, and the manager is so friendly and keen to help and can speak some English which makes things all the easier. There are quite a few shaokao and noodle places around the hotel, and importantly, the snowman drink place (蜜雪冰城) is not too far away! The hotel is just a couple of Ks south of the most popular entrance to the amazing ancient wall (大同古城), and in the other direction, about five hundred metres to another nice park called Mingtan Park where I flew my new drone for the first time ever while a local man practiced perfectly his Taoist meditation completely undeterred by the annoying whirring sound of the drone! My only regret is not planning more than a single night here. There’s so much more to Datong than just the Yungang Grottoes and the Hengshan Hanging Temple (though they are both totally spectacular!), so stay a couple of nights at least if you can.

All of the staff and service people were extremely courteous from start to finish. The Chinese restaurant on the 7th floor has a great choice of dishes! Highly recommended, and excellent value for money. A great base for exploring the sights around Datong.

I am from Malaysia, totally obsessed with this place and location, the person in charge, the lady explained to us the story and the history of this 2000 years old building Old Pipa ,I know is the old building with historic but didn't know the much story behind until I Google it, very appreciated that we still able to enjoy such a beautiful and well maintained room and building . The room come with a/c,hot shower smart toilet bowl, slipper and toothbrush and kettle. Breakfast is good. Love it. Hope people that come to stay here spent some time on the architectural and antiques that display in the duilding. Will definitely introduce to my friends and family if they visit 山西。

The staff didn’t speak English, we didn’t speak Chinese and yet, we had no issues communicating. They were always willing to answer our questions and give us recommendations on what to do or eat. The hotel also has a washing machine to use free of charge. The room itself is big enough, particularly the bathroom was bigger than the one we had in the 4 star hotel in Beijing in which we paid triple the price for. We visited during low season so it was very quiet. Given the price we paid per night using a special promotion, it’s hard for me not to rate 10/10 due to the value for money received.

This is a nice hotel in the vicinity of the train station. You can literally walk out of the train station and to the hotel. We were lucky and received an upgrade upon arrival. The staff are friendly and helpful and could speak to us in English. The hotel also has a nice convenience store in the lobby. The room is big, clean and cozy. The hotel is a little far out from the city centre but thankfully it’s just a short drive away.

The location is excellent. Shuangying Park is right next to it through the side entrance. Through the park is the commercial street, Lao Taiyuan Restaurant, snacks, and various shops. The lights are gorgeous at night. Shanxi Hotel itself is a landscape. Take pictures of the night view of the Bell and Drum Tower at the street entrance. Although it is in a busy city, the accommodation is quiet, the rooms are decent, and the breakfast buffet is rich. The price is 58 yuan per person, which is highly recommended.
