A German restaurant that has been in existence since 1866, the oldest in Texas. The biggest feature is German cuisine. The special dishes are completely different five days a week, and you can also drink a variety of German beers. It is very suitable for people who have wine, meat and stories to gather here. The price is much more affordable than many American restaurants. Maybe this is the business philosophy of this restaurant.

We&apos;ve been looking for outstanding German Food since moving to Texas 15 yrs ago.  Still looking. Historic Scholz Garten has a great atmosphere, located near Gov&apos;t and UT.  It appears, and rightfully so, that they cater to local demand supporting business and UT Fans.  The menu is mostly bar food and sausages.  Three German specialties are the smallest part of the menu.  Understandably, labor intensive German staples dishes such as rouladen and sauerbraten are not on the menu.     We ordered wiener schnitzel with potato pancakes as an appetizer.  The pancakes were silver dollar size, dried out, and over-spiced.  The wiener schnitzel was dry.  Luckily, we were given serrated knives.  The red cabbage and spatzel were very good.   We appreciate the local History but, given our hopes and expectations, we are still searching a fine German Eatery in Central Texas to highly recommend to our friends.

Open in 1866 when Austin’s population was 4,000.  Oldest bar and restaurant in Texas! And, it’s the Oldest beergarten in America!   This is a staple of Austin.  Great place to watch sport games.  Close to UT and the football stadium.    They have German food and Texas Americana food and beer.  You come here for the experience, tradition and ambience.  On this visit we got Piggy smalls, schnitzel, burgers and of course beer!  You have to come here once especially if you live here.

Nice and informal place for outdoor drinks and lunch or dinner near the Capitol campus. I liked the Currywurst platter coming with 2 types of cabbage, 2 pretzel buns and 3 sausages nicely grilled, a square meal. There is live music on some evenings. The indoors may be noisy. Friendly atmosphere.

We were here at 11:30 am on a Saturday, and figured we would miss the crowd (game was at 6 pm) - but we were wrong.  Drinks served in plastic “frat boy” cups and food served as if we were in the stadium.  No real utensils…just cheap plastic forks. Unfortunately - about the same fast food quality.  Really sad, 2 drinks, a brat and a burger $60 before tip.  Cannot recommend.

Don’t go when there is a game.

We stopped here before heading to a University of Texas women&apos;s basketball game. Our waitress, Maci, was sweet and helpful. She was so attentive and gracious. The beer menu was extensive and the appetizers were delicious. We had sauerkraut balls, loaded fries, and a soft pretzel that was to die for! We also stayed long enough to have sandwiches before leaving. I had the bratwurst and had a lot of different toppings to juice from. Everyone really loved their meals. The only thing that was not a fan favorite was the gumbo, but at a German Beer garden you don&apos;t expect to have the best. Gumbo. It was too chilly for us but there was a wonderful outside part of the venue. It was delicious, friendly, and fun! We will be back.

Scholz Garten

We visited this restaurant during happy hour waiting for our bus. While drinking our beers we asked the bartender about the large glass infusion jar on the bar and were promptly given a small glass to sample. It was heavenly mango-ginger infused vodka and we knew we had to return for dinner. We were not disappointed.
