 由鋼城新餘出發，沿高速公路向北疾馳，約2個半小時，即抵九江修水。
 這是我第二次到修水。
 作為江西面積最大的縣治，修水位於湘鄂贛三省交界之處，地處幕阜山與九嶺山脈之間，與三省9個縣市相接。有人甚至說修水乃三省中心地帶，由修水駕行到三省省會城市，車程皆在150~180分鐘之間。
 這是一座底蘊深厚的城市。其歷史可以自商代算起，那時便有人在此地立國，即艾侯國。若要算縣治，則始自唐代。唐設分寧縣，宋時則稱寧縣、義寧軍，元代又改作寧州。之後，還有多次域名變更。不過，無論怎麼變，似乎總不離一個「寧」字，譬如分寧、寧州、義寧等。直至1914年，民國政府調整行政區劃時，發現廣西已有同名「義寧縣」，為避免混淆，決定將江西義寧縣更名，最終以縣境內有修河而定名為「修水」。‌‌
 「寧」與「修」字，從字面上看，皆寓有美好之意。作為鄱陽湖水系五大河流之一的修河（亦稱修水、修江），發端於湘鄂贛三省交界的幕阜山麓，乃九江市境內最大河流。修河水行修遠、寧靜美麗，如一道碧帶，靈動地飄逸在贛西北的青山翠地之間。
 或是因了修河的滋養，修水地方可謂是人文薈萃，人才輩出。據不完全統計，修水人自有科舉的隋唐時起，至清後期，共考取進士380多名。尤其是號稱「華夏進士第一村」的雙井村，僅宋代黃氏家族就出過48位進士，其中最著名的便是與蘇軾齊名的大文豪、江西詩派開山之祖黃庭堅。
 即使到了近現代，修水之文名依然不衰。「陳門五傑」道出了義寧陳家四代出了五位傑出人物。在陳氏五傑中，官做得最大的是第一代的陳寶箴，他是唯一支持光緒變法維新的地方長官。名氣最大的則是陳氏第三代的陳寅恪，這位通曉十七種語言、被胡適評價為「今日最淵博、最有識見、最能用材料的人」，以其提出的「獨立之精神、自由之思想」及豐碩的開創性成果，成為一代宗師和不倒的學術旗幟。還有詩人陳三立，畫家陳衡恪和植物學家陳封懷，皆獲得了世人的讚譽。
 從黃庭堅到陳寅恪，修水人似乎有著共同的特點，既認真又倔強，既正直又張揚，既涵養深沉又有較強的開拓性。這樣的性格養成和文脈傳承，讓修水的歷史文化有了自己獨特的底色。
 修河縈繞的寧州古城，無疑是保留還比較完整的古代街區。三月的一天，在寧紅茶和雙井茶的氤氳茶香中，我開始漫步於這個古老的街區，親身感受著寧州古城「九井十八巷，巷巷通街上」城建佈局的精妙。這裡遺存著不少明清時期的建築，那悠長的古巷，那無波的古井，那一座座庭院深深的古祠，都是歷史的見證，收藏著古城千百年來的故事。
 在古城的街區裡，修水人設立了不少主題鮮明、極富特色的展覽館，有宣揚修水發展歷史及其傑出人物的，也有展示修水地方的非遺文化和名優特產的。當然，最亮眼的便是秋收起義紀念館以及與此相關的史跡展。這是此行修水的必打卡之地。
 作為秋收起義的主力部隊，中國工農革命軍第一軍第一師正是在修水組建。當秋收起義的第一槍在這裡打響時，中國工農革命第一軍第一師的軍旗已在修水的天空中高高飄揚。
 這是中國工農紅軍的第一面軍旗。
