The Mabang Courtyard boasts a history of over 300 years, and its history is now clearly traceable. It&#39;s located on the south side of Qiluo Ancient Town. Walking south from Nantai to Qiluo Ancient Town, and continuing south again, passing the Guanyin Temple, I arrived here just around the corner.

Originally, this courtyard was the residence of Xu Kunyi, a wealthy merchant in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China. It later became an important horse caravan post station on the Ancient Tea-Horse Road, carrying a rich historical and cultural heritage.

When I first entered, the courtyard seemed a bit &quot;rustic&quot;&mdash;in Northeastern dialect, it means a primitive, unadorned atmosphere, without any particularly striking features. But as I walked inside, I discovered the unique style of this western Yunnan quadrangle courtyard, skillfully blending the architectural features of the Bai ethnic group and the Central Plains. The structure is exquisite, with carved dragons and painted pillars, and the house is meticulously crafted. The layout of the courtyards is as ingenious as a small town in the south of the Yangtze River, with a unique charm and a different scene at every step.

Entering the courtyard, the first thing I saw was the Mabang Cultural Exhibition Hall. The museum displays horse lanterns, horse bells, saddles, and other artifacts, quietly conveying the unique charm of horse caravan culture. As the saying goes, &quot;Tengchong was built by horse caravans, one pack after another,&quot; and the photographs document the arduous journey of the caravans&#39; &quot;traveling around.&quot; &quot;Traveling around&quot; in the local area refers to the need for adult men to venture out, either to engage in business or to earn a living. This not only broadens their horizons but also has a profound impact on local commerce. It was here that I truly understood the significance of &quot;traveling around.&quot;

The compound also features many interesting cultural exhibits. For example, the introduction to jadeite mentions the love of jadeite by Republican figures Soong Mei-ling and Ruan Lingyu, and particularly recounts the story of Soong Mei-ling&#39;s twisted jadeite bracelet: originally purchased by Meng Xiaodong, the fifth concubine of Green Gang tycoon Du Yuesheng, it was later passed on to Soong Mei-ling, who kept it with her until her later years. The exhibits are meticulously detailed, with even the lines in the figures&#39; nails clearly visible, creating a strikingly realistic image that left a deep impression. The jade crafting process is also illustrated with wax figures, recreating the arduous process of jadeite processing.
As a venue that blends commerce and cultural tourism, it also sells unique items such as jade, tea, poetry, calligraphy, and paintings, and offers visitors the opportunity to experience intangible cultural heritage like the Ma Bang roasted tea. While I didn&#39;t taste any tea while walking outside, I could smell the slightly pungent aroma of the local tea, perhaps a flavor unfamiliar to outsiders like me.

Deeper still, there&#39;s the Ma Bang Restaurant, themed around tea and horse culture. Walls covered with photos of the daily lives of horse drivers, it gave me a different perspective on the life of the horse caravans.

Compared to the horse caravan culture of Heshun Ancient Town, the narrative here focuses more on the perspective of merchant families, making it particularly clear. I lingered in the courtyard for a long time, taking photos from time to time.
