This is my third visit to Huizhou Ancient City, and every time I discover something new! The ancient city isn't very large, so you can explore it in half a day! Why have I been able to come three times? 💁‍♀️Sharing three unique ways to explore this time, be sure to save them! 1️⃣ Best View The Xuguo Stone Archway, also known as the Grand Secretary Archway, is a major attraction in Huizhou Ancient City. 🔍As one of the few large Ming Dynasty stone archways in China and the only surviving octagonal archway in China, it is also known as the "Arc de Triomphe of the East." ⭐️The best view of the archway is from Fuya Laoye Coffee on the second floor of Yanghe Gate. 🐟Entering the museum, look up and see a variety of intangible cultural heritage fish lanterns hanging from the ceiling. These lanterns are of various sizes, colors, and shapes, their lights flickering like they're swimming in the water. ☕️Order a cup of coffee, sit by the window, and the Grand Secretary Archway will be right before your eyes. Surprisingly, there are free performances inside the building! The performers and audience are very close together, incorporating song, dance, and drama—it's truly entertaining! PS: It's recommended to confirm show times in advance and plan your trip accordingly to avoid long waits. 2️⃣ Enjoy tea and music atop Nanqiao Tower Nanqiao Tower, a place used to tell time at night in ancient times, was rebuilt in 1997 within the ancient city. It largely retains the wooden structure of the Qing Dynasty, with Song Dynasty-style gates. ⭐️There's a teahouse atop Nanqiao Tower that's worth spending half a day. The view is expansive, overlooking the streets of the ancient city. The tea is high-quality and diverse, featuring not only Huangshan famous teas like Huangshan Maofeng, Taiping Houkui, and Keemun black tea, but also specialty teas from other Anhui regions like Lu'an Guapian and Huoshan Huangya. 🥮We were also impressed by the nine-square snacks that accompanied our tea. They primarily feature local specialties, a selection they've refined over the years. The proprietress was very welcoming and later offered us some of her own fine tea. PS: On weekends and holidays, the teahouse also features guzheng music. It's truly relaxing to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the ancient city while sipping tea and listening to music! 3️⃣ Huizhou Folk Songs Inside the Cao Family's Second Residence in the ancient city is a small tea-song theater. ⭐️If you're looking for Huizhou folk songs, this is the place to go! The performer was an elderly man, primarily using the ruan, a traditional Chinese plucked string instrument. The ruan has a mellow and rich sound and is often used in solo, duet, and folk band performances. 👍Throughout the performance, I was deeply moved by the older generation's passion and dedication to traditional quyi. Traveling to Huangshan 🚄 Taking photos of Huizhou Ancient Town during the day is a tourist's thing, but taking photos of the fish lanterns at night is a real treat. At night, the fish lanterns on the road below Huizhou Ancient Town are so high up that it's hard to capture a full view. But there's this interpretation coffee shop above Huizhou Ancient Town ☕️ The ceiling is covered with fish lanterns 🐟 and it's a beautiful and photogenic place 👍🏽 When we arrived at night, we saw some cosplay guys and girls, but today's performance was outside, so the shop was empty and quiet. Huizhou summers can be quite sweltering! Since we're at the government office, a midday iced coffee is a great option. There's a 10% discount on government office tickets: Americanos are 16 yuan, and lattes are 26 yuan. But for those used to Americanos, the Americanos on flash sales are a better deal, so it's a great experience. This shop has a nice atmosphere. On the city wall to the left of the government office, there's a window that opens directly onto the octagonal archway. There are high chairs next to the window, so you can sip your iced coffee while looking out over the city wall at the archway, the streets behind, and the Huizhou-style architecture. It's a fusion of ancient and modern, West and East, creating a unique feeling of time and space. The shop actually has quite a variety of activities. ✓ You can dress up and take photos. Prices range from 98 to 298 yuan, and you'll get makeup and a photo session. You can wear them to explore the ancient city. ✓ There are immersive performances in the afternoon at 2:30, 4:00, and 7:00 PM. These performances are blind box-style and last about 15 minutes each.
