After traveling down the Sichuan-Tibet Highway from southern Anhui, I found this Xiaoqiao local cuisine restaurant in Ningguo for a break. The restaurant isn&#39;t particularly eye-catching, but the atmosphere is downright homely 🌿, giving me a sense of relaxation, like returning home from a journey.

I&#39;d been told to use less oil and salt, and the dishes were generally quite palatable, though some were a bit salty&mdash;for example, the stinky mandarin fish 🐟. The fermentation was perfectly mellow, and the fish was firm. A little less salty would have made it even more palatable. The braised platter was a pleasant surprise: the pig ears were braised to a crispy, chewy consistency, and the pig&#39;s feet were stewed to a tender, boneless consistency. The gelatinous texture was sticky but not greasy, perfect with an iced drink 🍻. The Jixi yellow beef hotpot arrived bubbling away, the beef tender and mildly spicy, the radish soaked up the broth and incredibly sweet 🍲. The handmade rice crust, topped with diced bamboo shoots and minced pork, is a must-eat while it&#39;s hot. The crispy, firm rice crust is topped with diced bamboo shoots and minced pork, and the crunch is bursting with flavor. The pickled mustard greens pancakes are crispy and crunchy, the salty flavor of the pickled mustard greens blending with the fragrant noodles 🥞. And then there&#39;s the Jixi stinky tofu, a dark, unassuming block of tofu, yet its fermented richness is palatable, especially when dipped in chili sauce. 🌶️

Not spectacular, but solid enough. This table of Anhui specialties made for a truly down-to-earth end to our Sichuan-Tibet Highway trip ✨.
